  1. Hello all! I am brand new here and very excited to be a part of it. So, here it goes...Picked up a 3 month old kitten(Oona)on a Saturday morning, from a reputable foster agency. I already have a one year old silver tabby named Jasmine and was hoping they would become BFFs. Well, by Monday, Oona was exhibiting cold like symptoms, and her spay incision ( which had been done the wed. before we picked her up) seemed a little funny ( looked like maybe it wasn't closing up properly. Long story short, I took her to my vet on thursday and it turns out she has an upper respiratory infection, an infected spay incision, and tape worms. The poor thing is just a baby and she has to deal with all of that! Anyway, today is Wed. one week after her initial vet visit and I wonder if I can let her get reintroduced to Jasmine. She has been on antibiotics and eyedrops for a week( and of course no contact and lots of washing hands). Keep in mind that from saturday until thursday, ( before I took Oona to the vet) the two cats were together. Jasmine has not shown any signs of infection and Oona is acting like a kitten again- running around, jumping playing. There doesn't seem to be any discharge from her eyes nor any sneezing. My vet said to keep them apart for a week, and since she seems to be doing well, just be sure that she doesn't overexert herself with the new cat. And also to make sure there are no more signs of congestion. My vet is closed today. hope you guys can give me some advice.

  2. Welcome OJ to TDK!!! You will find many wonderful and knowledgable kitty lovers here!! Although I'm a kitty lover, I'm not the best person to answer these questions for you. Hang in there, they will come, just keep checking back. Do your kitties have a catster page? or do you have any pictures of them?? If you would like to meet my kitties, just click on the picture to the left.

  3. Hi OJ! Welcome to TDK! As for your question one of our other members had a situation like that (Great Dane) where she adopted a small kitten and found out he was sick shortly after that. Even though she kept them apart for 2 weeks like the vet said, her older kitty got cold symptoms when she let the kitten out.
Most likely your older kitty has been exposed. Is Jasmine up to date on her vaccines? Most likely(or maybe not) she'll get a slight cold and might need antibiotics but after a week your kitten shouldn't be contagious.
    I'd put them together.
Others will have good advice later, please check back.

  6. If your vet says to wait a week, then do so. He/she knows what is wrong with your kitten and has the best judgement. So let them together now and just watch that he older one doesn't overpower your baby. You are a good Mom--you took her to the vet right away, now you can enjoy your new baby! Have fun!

  7. Hi OJ! Welcome to the "litter"! We are so glad to have you here! We are one big family that loves our four legged furbabies! We are so excited that you have a new baby. I like the name Oona, where did you get that? It is somewhat exotic sounding! You know, if she is photogenic you should take her picture and submit it to the kitten master. Each day he picks a "DAILY KITTEN" to be featured on the main page. Maybe your baby could be picked! We won't be pushy but we do love pictures! Would love to see both your kits! And yes, I agree with Sheba's mom, I would wait to introduce them again until the little one is all healthy. Give her a gentle hug (((OONA))) from me. If you want to see my girls (Betty and Wilma) CatSter page, just click on my Avatar. Keep us updated on your babies. Again, welcome!

  8. Thanks so much for all you're advice. Oona is actually playing chase right now with Jasmine. They seem to be getting along really well! PHEW!! I don't want her to over do it (she is very excited about out 7 ft cat tree) so I will separate them at bedtime. I am trying to get a picture up of the girls, but I'm having some trouble. Plus, I have to get some studying in tonight before I start to get tired ( watching these girls has been hard work!). Once again, thanks so much. I hope to have some pics up by the weekend!

  10. This was very helpful! I am new here and had the same question as Ojkitties. My new Kitten has now been isolated for a week and the vet said we have to wait another whole week before we can let her out. Its so heart breaking that she is in a room by herself. I go in there as often as possible to remind her how much she is loved but its still really hard. Hopefully my 5 year old kitty doesn't show up with any symptoms!

  11. Welcome to TDK, HTM. Please start a new thread and introduce yourself.
One of our other members, Great Dane, had to keep her cats separated for several weeks due to health issues. She kept one in her bathroom. The other, resident, cat became more and more curious about the stranger in the bathroom. He seemed eager to play with the newcomer. They began to paw each other under the bathroom door. They are great friends now. :)
