My favorite story was when Dewey learned how to open the closet so that he could sleep with the puppet that he loved so much! The rubber band story...just goes to show how smart cats are. I think the story of the child in the wheelchair..and how Dewey helped her to come out of her shell. I have a couple of cats now that remind me of Dewey...Goober is one and he is an orangie!

I liked how he got even the most reluctant visitors to the library to admire him. The stealing of the sandwich was great!
Dewey's aging really touched me. His graceful decline reminded me very much of Shaddo. So much so, that while I was reading, I felt as though I was reading Shaddo's story.Posted 11 months ago by JoanfromNewJersey #

Goodness - to pick one favorite Dewey story? I think that it might have been when Vicki took Dewey for his official photograph and the photographer anticipated having trouble. The fact that Vicki explained to him that Dewey was just out of his element, and then proceeded to explain to Dewey why they were there, and that it was for the library. Dewey truly seemed to understand everything that Vicki ever said to him.
And that photograph absolutely melts my heart.
I thought that a funny story of Dewey was when the library was painted and he now had access to a ladder. And a way to learn to get on the top of the shelves, and then onto the lights. Can you even imagine being in a library and looking up and seeing a cat walking on the lights?
One of the most touching stories to me was about the family that brought their little girl all the way to Spencer to meet Dewey. She brought him that mouse, but it wasn't catnip. And Dewey played with it while the little girl was there, but never touched it again.
Dewey was such a special kitty. While he was so different from most of my cats, there was one. He reminds me a bit of my precious Willie, who was a rescue cat. Willie never knew a stranger and everyone who met him fell in love with him.

I laughed at the rubber band story too. Cats can be very persistent when they really want something! The story of the little girl in the wheelchair was most touching to me.
Dewey was sort of a compilation of different cats I have known, all rolled into one special cat. My Nibs is very empathetic; in fact I finished the book with her comforting me, since I was bawling - I had book and kleenex in one hand, an armful of Nibs in the other. However, she will not interact with anyone else.

Since I haven't finished it,I'll have to go with what I've read so far. I really loved the difference he made in the little girls life that was in the wheelchair. There's nothing more moving than to see an animal change the spirit of a child (altho I don't have any children). One doesn't need to have them to enjoy them. :)
Oh...I can tell you I've had cats with every little trick,trait,escapade that cute Dewey showed. It was like having all my babies back with me while reading. :) -
My favorite, if I have to pick one, was his adoration for the "ultimate rubber band", the Christmas tree!!

How picky he was about his food reminded me of Tessie her last year. Of course she was never picky until I really needed to make sure she ate. The story of him going in the lobby and she yelled at him "young man, get in here right now" and there was a young man in the lobby and she scared him and he got in there then Dewey came in with a big smile on his face. Cats do love to make fools out of us mere humans.

My favorite anecdote was the little girl who brought Dewey the mouse ~ he played with it while she was there because he knew how much it meant to her... the funniest story was the rubber bands ~ haven't we all 'been there, done that' with our own kitties? The most touching was the bond between Vicki and Dewey ~ special, but, since Dewey lived at the library, not too overwhelmingly 'personal';

I liked the story of Dewey's short escape into the world. I think he learned "there's no place like home." Several TDK members have had an escapee and can identify with how Vicki felt. Them empathy was enormous. Then having him found so very close to the library, terrified as he was, is also a lesson about not taking anything for granted.
I also loved the connection that Dewey had with the children. He taught so many life lessons--he might have been a cat but he also was a teacher!

Dewey's rubber band snatching is just like my Chance. I have to bury them in the wastebaskets or hide them because he absolutely loves them (and I find the pieces, not pleasantly, upchucked around the house).

My Spooky was a rubber band eater, fortunately she wasn't as persistant as Dewey in obtaining them. Molly likes push pins. I had to start using thumb tacks as she pulls pushpins out whenever she can. She likes to play with them and I don't think they are a safe toy. One time she tried to pull the light switch out I think she thought it was a pushpin. The light went out-on out on several times. Fortunately she gave it up
