Having lived in some small towns, although not as small as Spencer, what happened there really doesn't surprise me. Small town America is still the most resilient and the people are strong. Just look at what is going on in North Dakota with the flooding. Everyone pitches in because it is their home and they are proud.
The people of Spencer were beaten, but by no means out. It just took a spark to make them see that their town was still a wonderful place to live and to raise a family.
And what a special spark Dewey was!

...... I think small towns are charming, but have never lived in one......their resillence and fortitude are admirable.....
....interesting to me though, was the "power" that the leaders of that town welded - they could have taken Dewey away, or made him be put down....I think that upset Vicki ( and I don't think she would have let that happen), I know it would me......
...but then again, in a big City, I'm not sure it would even be possible for a library to have a cat - too much beauracratic red tape.......

I grew up in a town even smaller than Spencer; reading the book was like going home again.

This book just describes the trials and tribulations of a small town; as a resident, your opinion of the town depends on whether you are in the 'in crowd' or the 'out crowd'; in a big city you can find your own crowd, 'good' or 'bad', 'in' or 'out'....
Think of 'Cabot Cove' from the old TV series 'Murder, she wrote'......

I live in a small town now. I have lived in a city of over 2 million. This could only happen in a small town. In a big city there are just too many people. This one small impoverished town needed uplifting and Dewey did it. Big cities are a bit more impersonal merely because of the sheer number of people. Small towns have an ability to know other because of the limited number. Both have their perks and disadvantages. Personally I am in a small town for a reason, and I think that this story demonstrates many of the reasons I like a small town.

At first I wondered why all the background on the town. I grew up in a small town in Illinois, so it just seemed natural to me to know a lot of how small towns work. But I realized that there were people reading the book who had no idea what it was like in a small town or during that time when things could change so quickly. When I moved to Iowa to a small town, I realized that small towns had something special no matter where they are. Living in a bigger city now makes me glad I had that small town experience as I grew up and left home.
