  1. How much of an impact do you think Dewey had on Spencer? Do you believe he affected the town? If so, how?

  2. I honestly believe that Dewey saved that town. He took the town when they were dispirited and unable to clearly see how to save their town when the factory closed. When Dewey came, and especially when he began to be known outside of just Spencer, it energized them. That's when they renovated their Main Street and became excited once more about things like the Christmas Festival. They realized once more what the strongest thing about Spencer was - its people.

  3. I think he gave Spencer it's heart back, and was a common thread that brought them back together.

  4. I think he was the glue that held the town together after the factory closed. He was a reason to be proud of their home town.

  5. I think that people liked him but I would disagree that he saved the town actually. I more see it that the towns people, who were able to take to and love the library cat so much, had the strength of spirit and closeness to cope and rebuild. You see the same thing in the story about the fire; they repaired and rebuilt then because of the community spirit. Dewey was important as a figurehead maybe and the widespread attention gave them something to be proud of, but I doubt his magic and purrs would work everywhere - special townspeople were also part of the recipe.

  6. I do think that he did have some impact on the town. Specifically, he literally breathed new life into Spencer.

  7. I think he was one piece in a very large puzzle that helped that town stay alive. I think it opened people eyes to the fact things were needing to change and helped them deal with the things that did and fight the things that they didn't want.

  8. I think Dewey was a very special gift to those who were closest to him; luckily, the rest of the town elders were able to capitalize on his special gifts to help the whole town.

  9. He sure did change some of that old boy system--the library eventually became the heart of a town that had gone a little cold because of the economic situation.

  10. I adored the way that Vicki described what Dewey did for Spencer. "He was Spencer's cat. He was our inspiration, our friend, our survivor. He was one of us. And at the same time, he was ours. Was he a mascot? No. Did he make a difference in the way the town thought about itself? Absolutely. Not to everyone, of course, but to enough. Dewey reminded us, once again, that we were a different kind of town. We cared. We valued the small things. We understood life wasn't about quantity but quality. Dewey was one more reason to love this hardy little town on the Iowa plains. The love of Spencer, the love of Dewey, it was all intermingled in the public mind."

In so many ways, Dewey represented everything good about Spencer. And he helped the people there to remember, as well.
