  1. What do you think is the overall theme of the book? Is it hope? How animals can affect people's lives? Is it about community?

  2. I think the overall theme is love....... given, accepted, returned, and most of all - it conquers adversity..... without love, we would not have hope, community, or anything...... it's why it is truly "the greatest" of all.

  3. I must agree with AV. Dewey brought many things to Spencer. But without love, none of it would have happened. The love that Vicki felt for Dewey the minute that she rescued him out of the box. The love that Dewey felt for Vicki. The love that the town felt for this special kitty. The love that the people of Spencer began to feel once again for their town, and for each other. The love that Dewey brought into the life of little Crystal, the child in the wheelchair.

I loved the way that Vicki described Dewey's personality by saying, "He won hearts day by day, one person at a time. He never left anyone out or took anyone for granted. Every regular used of the library, every single one, flet they had a unique relationship with Dewey. He made everyone feel special".

Yes, the message has to be love. This passage that Vicki wrote sort of says it all, "The real truth is that for all those years, on the hard days, the good days, and all the unremembered days that make up the pages of the real book of our lives, Dewey was holding me."

    Beautiful.

  4. The overall theme was love.... love of Dewey, love that Dewey gave to so many...love of the townspeople for Spencer... love of life...

  5. Love given and received can change a bleak community into a thriving caring community. Dewey gave and received and Spencer was able to make it through a rough time.

  6. I looked at it with the idea of peace. He showed how different people could be at peace with each other. (except the lady with the horse) Even if you didn't want him in the beginning you later wanted him there. He could break down barriers and tear down walls (and eat rubber bands).

  7. I thought throughout reading the book that it was about hope, and that animals can affect lives and towns as well.

  8. No doubt...love but also I think it was about survival. Vicki went thru so many things in her life with her family and with herself. Dewey went thru a night in a freezing drop box that most babies would not have been able to endure. He had the will to live and survive. The town of Spencer had to pull together to survive the economic decline at that time. I believe Dewey was an angel in disguise at a time when everyone needed hope and and a realization that even in the hardest of times the smallest can survive and come out on top. With Dewey's survival..it helped the community work together so that the town could also survive.

  9. I felt it was showing the power of love... love changes everything. Love can bring a community together and help overcome what seem to be insurmountable obstacles.
