  1. A friend of mine mentioned today taking acidophilus for my ulcer. I know it is recommended for treatment and prevention of cold sores and figure there's probably a connection.
Anyone ever hear of it for ulcers? Try it? And if so, did it help?

  2. I've heard of it, GD. And I did try it when I was diagnosed with ulcers, but... I just couldn't stand it! *yuck* It is good for you, though, and it's worth a try.

  3. I don't know how it would help your ulcers, but then I am not a doctor. I do know that you don't want to take it if you a lactose intolerant. Is your ulcer caused by a bacteria?

  4. GD, I take it daily and have for years! Haven't had an ulcer since! (can't say that my current situation won't bring me another one but that is a story for another day........)

  5. GD, are your meds working? If so, why would you want to mess with a good thing?

  6. GD, I am the queen of gastero.... problems, and better than acidophilis are probiotics...... get the pharmacuetical grade from your doctor..... those are so good, they don't need to be refridgerated.....acidophilis is just a minor strain of probiotics.... if you really want to pump up your digestive health, go for the best probiotics....this is the stuff that puts the good bacteria back in your system... after problems, ulcers (because of acid) or other problems, colitis, IBS, the bacteria balance in your stomach gets out of wack... probiotics are the best way to put back the "good bacteria" and help regulate your system... the kind I take from my Dr. are brand named Ortho Biotic. Your Doctor, or health food pharmacy should be able to get them for you.

  9. How are you feeling GD? Did you get a follou up check up? Did they test you for H pylori? Please don't answer if you don't want to, but please address these issues :)

  10. GD, I know an elderly man that swears by Aloe Juice for ulcers. Although I have never been diagnosed with an ulcer I have used Aloe Juice when I have stomach problems and it certainly calmed my stomach down.

  11. I'm feeling much better, TL. No more pain! No more pain from headaches, either as it's been two weeks since I stopped coffee. I didn't follow up with my doctor as I simply can't afford it (I don't have health insurance). If the symptoms come back, I will go see him.
The friend I saw yesterday mentioned something about antibiotics causing ulcers? Is that true? I went to the dentist Friday and Monday before going to the ER the following Friday and both times took 2000 mg of amoxicillin. Just wondering.....

WWM, maybe once I can drink alcohol again.....

  12. GD, 2000 mgs???? That sounds awfully high, do you mean 200? You sound like my daughter, not going back to the dr. for follow-ups. *shakes her finger at GreatDane*

  13. Nope, it's 2000. 4 pills at 500mg each - just a onetime thing when I go to the dentist. I just happened to go on a Friday and then again on Monday, so it seemed like a lot in a short period of time.

  14. GD, that is some serious AB therapy they gave you! I think your ulcers were coming long before the anitbiotic started. Just a thought. So thrilled you have been so good with your eating and are feeling so good. Luv to the boys and lots of scritches! B&W send them some headbonks!

  15. GD are they treating your ulcers with the high dose of amoxicillan for H. Plyori cynobacter? that bacteria causes peptic ulcers and they usually treat it fast and furious with large doses of a anitbotic. h plyori can cause not only peptic ulcer diease but cancer as well and a host of other major problems. have you had any gallbladder trouble?

i bleieve that is the correct treatment for h. pylori cyanobacter. i think the doc wants you to have the anitbotics to prevent ulcers.

  16. i reread your post and i think i misunderstood did the dentist give you the amoxicillan? i don't know if antibotics cause ulcers, alot of antibotics at one time can cause a c difficele, and give you baddd diarrhea. but i have never heard of a ulcer caused by a anitbotic although some are hard on the stomach. am i digging myself deeper in a hole? oooh drat , take those pro botics as abigial/ violets momma said !! lol !!

GD, I thought these 2 references are quite informative and easy to understand.

I am not aware that there is a relationship with ulcers or antibiotics. I am assuming you were given such a high quick dose as a prophylactic treatment prior to dental work. I will tell you from my own experience that I developed terrible GE reflux about a year ago after I was given a course of a very strong tetracycline type antibiotic over a month. Could have just been a coincidence.
In the baove reference, there is some good information about diet vs antacids. Far be it for me to change your plan whcih is working...but , many years ago, it was the standard practice to do the bland diet thing forever. Regular use of mylanta (which is yuck, beleive me, I have to take it regularly) is really more effective. So, just cosider eating more normally before you evaporate into thin air! Of course it makes sense not to go from bland to a spicy chilidog, but use common sense.
If your symptoms recur, or do not completely resolve, you must really try to see if there is an economical way of getting the H pylori test done. Maybe calling the ER doc who saw you that night, explaining the situation, he can write a prescription and at least get the test done....anyway, somthing to consider.
Hope you continue to feel better.

  18. I had two ulcers and did have to do the bland diet for a month or so. But then, back to normal. I have learned what I can and cannot eat, but for the most part I eat whatever I want.

Don't worry, GD. This is not forever!

Posted 2 years ago by WillowandWindismom #

  19. Thanks, all! I'm still doing the bland diet and it's working - I'm feeling better and have lost some weight, too.
I'm going to give the bland diet another couple of weeks just to be safe. I'm past the desire for coffee and met friends three times for "coffee" this week and had tea!

TL, I'm taking Mylanta, too, in addition to the Prevacid - the doctor told me to. IF they did all my bloodwork at the hospital, wouldn't thay have found the H Pylori bacteria?
I'll definitely go to my doctor if the symptoms recur, TL.

Beth, yes, it was the dentist giving the antibiotics for something else.

  20. Did the soy coffee come yet?

Posted 2 years ago by WillowandWindismom #

  21. GD, it's not necessarily a test that would be done in the ER. I would check with the doc who saw you or just ask for the records.
Glad you continue to feel well.

Posted 2 years ago by Tigerlilly #

  22. It did, WWM! I'm finally at a point where I'm no longer craving coffee, so I haven't tried it yet. When I do, I'll let you know how it compares.

    Thanks, TL!

Posted 2 years ago by GreatDane #

  23. GD, I was just thinking about that soy coffee, too! Wondered if you had tried it yet and how it was. You'll have to let us know when you do have some!

Posted 2 years ago by katthays #

  24. I'll be anxious to know how you like it. I used to drink gallons of coffee but stopped when I had my ulcers. There are times that I would really like to have some coffee but now, because I don't drink it anymore, it gives me an immediate caffeine headache. If it tastes good, I think that I might try it.

Posted 2 years ago by WillowandWindismom #

  25. Antibiotics don't cause ulcers, they are used to treat the bacteria they claim now causes some ulcers. Acidophilis is used to help prevent yeast infections caused by taking antibiotics.
