Grooming question

  1. Hello,

I have a problem regarding my long-haired, white cat. Well, the problem is he has a urine smell about him. Unfortunately he doesn't groom himself well in certain areas and has a bit of yellow staining and smelliness. I have tried using wipes on him, which don't help. I've also tried bathing him which helps with the staining, but not so much the smell. I have been using Hartz brand products and I was wondering if anyone knew of another brand to try or had any other tips to help with the smelliness.

  2. Hello, Pouncer!

There are only two things that I can think of will help.

The first is trimming up his hair in the region a bit. This will give the urine less to dribble onto, and it will also provide fewer bits for any fecal matter to hitch a ride.

The second is more easily accomplished with a sink and sprayer attachment, than a tub. He needs a sitz bath once a week, or he needs to stand in the sink and let you rinse his privates thoroughly with warm water. You don't have to use soap, detergent, or shampoo, but if you feel compelled, a gentle, inexpensive, minimally scented or unscented human shampoo should work fine. (Not baby shampoo.)

You may also want to give your vet a call. You will want to make sure there's not any other problem that may be contributing to the problem via incontinence, large quantities of urine, a urinary tract infection, crystals in the bladder or urethra, or any other bladder problems. If there's an underlying condition like that, no amount of bathing and trimming will help the poor guy until the condition's treated.

    Good luck!

  3. My white long hair doesn't have the urine smelly problem, but sometimes a little poop gets caught in her hairs in the rear. The best solution I've fond was to trim the hair a bit and keep it brushed. I use what they call a 'rake' to comb the undercoat out and she loves when I do it because it does not pull. Together with a trim and the grooming, it seemed to help.

Also, has he been neutered? If not, then that could be the problem also.
