Crafting with Cats

(5 posts)
  1. As some of you may know, I have a small arts and crafts business, producing sugar art and crocheted soft sculpture.

I also have two cats, Rotley and Ruggles, who "help" me with all facets of my little company. Right now I am in the middle of creating Victorian sugar eggs for Easter craft shows(they are NOT for consumption -- decorative only), and working on them with two curious cats is a bit of a challenge.

So far, I've retrieved dried baby's breath from Ruggles, who got a strand caught in his teeth, and I tried unsuccessfully to keep Rotley from eating it -- he horked it up in the middle of the kitchen floor.

Those two are the Quality Assurance Officers for my products.

There was also an incident when I surprised Ruggles. He was on the dining room table, which is forbidden territory when I am working on the sugar eggs. Ruggie got scared when he saw me staring at him, and tucked his big furry head in a large Easter egg. He was convinced that since he couldn't see me, he had morphed into "The Invisible Cat."

Rotley rolled around on the floor when that happened, paws waving in the air and purring loudly. (This was his version of raucous laughter!)

Does this happen to anyone else?

  2. Oh heaven's yes! Betty and Wilma do stuff like that all the time. My usually involves one or the other jumping on the kitchen counter and then me finding them there!

  3. I used to have a heck of a time when I did fabric painting---it has to dry for 24 hours lying flat. Of course no matter where I put it one of them would get curious--some outfits had paw prints whether I meant them to or not! As far as knitting or crocheting we all know what happens then!

  4. *peeks around to make certain that Willow and Windi aren't here*

My quilting room is a "kitty free zone". It's in the attic, and you have to get to it from the garage. So my girls don't even know that it's up there. The minute I bring a finished quilt downstairs, though, it's a fight to see who gets to lay on it first. I don't think that I have ever managed to give a quilt as a gift that wasn't covered in kitty hair.

My girls are both very, very bad about stealing dried or fresh flowers. I gave up on Baby's Breath because I was finding it all over the house.

What a visual picture of Ruggles and Rotley!

  5. Oh shoot, you would think something were wrong in my HEAD! I didn't finish my comment up above. They usually get up on the counter to explore what meowmy is working on. I am not too crafty but do like to do some cross-stitching and they like to "undo" my stitches and chew and fray the edges!
