Our 11 month old kitten appears to have a swollen anus and a very noticeable odor. I gave him a bath and washed him up after noticing some loose stool on his tail but we still can smell the odor. Need a suggestion to help him over the weekend and will take him to the vet on Monday.

Anal Gland Smell
(9 posts)-
He may need to have his anal glands expressed, does he appear to be in pain? Being a holiday weekend, it may be slow but someone may be on during the day with a lot more knowledge than I.

I seem to remember someone saying that if he is rubbing his little behind on the floor, that may be what's wrong with him, so you could well be right, Deb. I have no experience with this at all but I'm sure other TDKers have. Didn't someone say that you could get the vet to show you how to do it but that it was a fairly unpleasant thing to do? Some cats seem to need it done only once or twice, others more regularly. I think the vet may be your best bet, DKTAGirl.

DKT, my Bandit used to have that problem....it was such a horrid odor and got on everything! My vet expressed the glands, he showed me how to do it, but I could never get it right and I was afraid I was hurting Bandit. He seemed to go through phases where his glands would fill, then other times he seemed ok. Good luck to you on this!

Our year old boy Schatzi has this issue. Every once in a while it smells like he has a poopy butt, however nothings there. Then by accident, when washing his butt with a cloth, I saw the anal glands express. A clear stinky fluid. It was better for months after that. He's had it once since and again I relieved us both by a simple butt wash with a cloth. First and only cat I've experienced this with.

Sneakers has this problem twice. He doesn't do the scoot dance but he stinks big time. The vet says it happens often with adolescent boy cats and may cease being a problem in a couple more months. (Sneakers just turned one.)

So this doesn't happen to girl cats? I know it does in female dogs. Molly is about to turn 6 and I've not noticed anything in particular.

Thank you all. Whisper seems to be doing OK. I've been checking daily and his bottom has returned to normal. He was the runt in his litter and is still pint size and I have been concerned that he might have some health issues. He's sitting happily in my lap taking a bath and acting normal so I'm assured that he's fine. He has had poopy butt issues more than any other cat that we've had and I have given him baths numerous times to clean his bottom.
