  1. i have started to replace the wet friskies with raw chicken instead, and the farm cats have taken to it very well! they even had no trouble at all with eating the bones, which was suprising. it can only be 50% of all their food, with the other 50% being dry since i can only feed them once a day. i can't believe how much more active and healthier looking they are already with only getting it for a few feedings :D

its actually a bit cheaper feeding raw instead of friskies canned, but they still would rather have canned. anyone else feed raw?

  2. I don't, FF. But my girls don't eat people food. My husband tried giving them some bits of raw beef a couple of weeks ago. They gave it the sniff test and then the "walk away offended with my tail held high" routine. But my kitty, Bombalurina, that I lost two years ago loved raw chicken and raw sushi grade tuna. Bomber had very expensive tastes. Sadly, she was also very plump her whole life. That little girl just lived to eat.

  3. I feed some raw food to my kitties, but it's ground raw chicken (whole), with chicken livers, fish oil, and a few sardines added. Haven't quite been able to get the cats to go the whole route of taking entire drumsticks apart. And there's one of my cats who's positively addicted to her kibble's carbohydrates; she won't touch wet cat food, let alone raw food. Ironically, she was an abandoned cat in farm country; when she was young, she hunted her food.

  4. I am interested in an alternative to canned food for my gang. I've been reading up on it....supposedly you have to add taurine to the food or the cats could go blind? So what did cats do before this was found out--unless there is taurine in mice and birds?

  5. i am not going to add anything because they are already getting dry and can't do anything about giving them the dry since they only get fed once a day. thats how much i can get there, so dry is technically breakfast and raw is their supper.

heart has lots of taurine in it i think, i've fed a little of it before and they ate it fine. i only fed it then though because they ate it and else there wasn't any use for it (i work on a dairy farm if that explains it lol!). i don't know much either yet. i know darker chicken meat is better than the light meat.

i'm lucky though with how easily they are eating raw - meat, bones - everything! though they do catch mice on rare occasion so know how to deal with prey.

the dry that i am giving them right now is a mix of Instinct (rabbit recipe one), Wellness, and Kirkland. Next month it is going to be kirkland, Natural Balance, and katz-n-flocken(? spelling). also i have been adding in chicken soup senior hairball formula dry to help with hairballs even though it isn't great because it is senior cat food.

  6. I always fed my cat very rare and raw meats and fish. Also some dry food just to snack on. My vet always remarked how healthy and strong she was and how nice her coat was.

  7. does your vet support you feeding raw? if they do you are lucky! i think the vet that my mom works at would kill me if they found out...

  8. Since cats are carnivores, some raw should be good for them; keep us posted on how they do with the raw, please.... I worry so much about feeding my kits "cat food", regardless of the brand, wet or dry.... especially since the last scare...

  9. Shadz eats raw food and sometimes that raw food is still running around until she catches it. She also has dry food but doesn't eat very much of it daily. She is a fine healthy cat according to the vet. The only possible down side is that she required her teeth to be cleaned as her gums were slightly red, she needs more bones or kibble for chomping and chewing, something that I am ensuring she gets now. Shadz usually has chunky beef or steak and kidney mix pet food, very fresh with no preservatives. This is supplemented with fresh fish or chicken.

  10. well, mine are already more active with just a few times getting raw. i have to cut it up else one cat runs off with the whole chicken thigh (all that i could get at grocery store). i am using four thighs right now instead of 5 cans of friskies. they are getting full faster on raw so i might have to use less because they aren't quite finishing. its a $0.60 cheaper a day with what i am buying right now, so a big step ahead of the mystery meat friskies.

all i have to cut it with at the farm is butter knives, i found that the cat food can lids from friskies are much easier to cut with. pathetic that i don't have something that actually is meant to cut with, but where ever i would put it there i would worry about them finding it. at least the cat food can lids are quite sharp!

my parents are getting me chicken from costco today. i told them that it has to be uncooked which they don't understand but are going to get it. i'm thinking that it may be even cheaper from there though.

  11. Cato eats raw, except the brains, those he leaves for me :) Titus doesn't know anything but dry food. I am going to have to alter that, maybe some calves liver will help? Elizabeth

  12. they got raw boneless chicken thighs tonight which was the only chicken costco had. they ate four pieces just fine and wanted more but thats all i took with me, so they got some sophistacat chicken slices cans also. they are really improving with how they look and everything! and they are so eager to eat this :D

i noticed tonight that some of the cats in the strawmow are getting a little bit overwieght - not much at all but can't feel backbones/ribs as easily as i should be able to. i measure their dry food in 3 oz scoops, so instead of 10 scoops tonight i gave them nine.

i can't get my mom to understand why i am feeding them raw. i explained it to my dad and he understands, and now supports my feeding raw. my mom though still thinks i should be feeding all dry food and science diet at that. how are you supposed to explain it? cats are carnivores and carnivores eat meat. most of the protien in dry SD comes from plants which has no benifit for cats who are unable to digest it properly. maybe i should get her to read that paper i have been writing when bored during study hall lol!

  13. last night they ate all of what i gave them. i had five chicken thighs that i cut up, one uncooked egg, and then a can of the sophistacat chicken slices that i mixed all together. i measured it out and each cat gets about 1.25 oz of raw and 1/3 oz then of the canned sophistacat.

they are looking differant and are more active. i really should take pictures of them from above now and then sometime next month to see how much they have changed.

  14. They need taurine which they get from mice. I tried the raw diet that you mix a powder with the extra nutrients in it with chicken livers---my indoor cats wouldn't touch it so I gave it to the ferals---they couldn't eat it fast enough!

  15. My outdoor cats are very healthy due to supplementing their own diet with mice and frogs.

  16. they did great again eating it all last night. i am going to get some taurine supplement tomorrow as well has more chicken or maybe turkey. i took some pictures of them last night just to see if they change how they look etc.
