Hello. I'm 64,born in the Boston area, now living in the Kansas City area. I was trained as a lawyer--graduated cum laude from Drake Law School. I worked a few years as an attorney, but then was unable to get a job as an attorney. Then worked 7 years in a call center and was fired. 2 1/2 years of unemployment and then was hired by as basically a long distance operator. That was the job I was laid off from last December. I have tried looking for paralegal jobs, clerical jobs, call center jobs, nothing. I had a part time job that was supposed to give me 25 hours a week but except for the first week I never got that. That was opening the stuff to come in to be tested--urine, blood, etc. My other contract job didn't even last through the taining period. My church family has been wonderful. But I still can't find a job and that is what I need.

Hi, Yankee, welcome!
It's a rotten job market right now. (Unless you're a big CEO, and in that case, just shovel the millions.)
Wishing you luck.
Got any cats? Tell us about them if you do! (Some of us don't, cat lovers who are either allergic or just not in a situation to have them.)

Welcome to TDK, yankee. I love it when someone who has been lurking for a while says hi and joins the fun. Sorry to hear about the job situation. Do you have any two legged or four legged family members? We are glad to add you to our family!

I'm a Yankee because I am from Boston, Massachusetts. Of Course, I ama Red Sox Fan, that is part of my email address. I have 3 cats now. Lil'Bit who is fat; Snowball, who is pure white; and Misty, who is pure gray. In the last 2/3 weeks, I have had 2 cats die. One a stray that I had brought in in late Spring/early summer; the other one that had been born into the family when I moved to this town. The other member of the family is Rusty,an 11 1/2 pound pomeranian. I am depressed and have no option but to apply for social security come December 1st. It won't be enoughto pay bills but it will mean some money coming in. I simply don't know what to do anymore. People don't seem to understand what being unemployed does to you when you're alone.

Yankee, there is nothing bad about applying for social security. It is part of what you have earned through your working life. When I had to retire because of my health, I applied for early social security too. While I wish I still had a full time job, I realize that at this point in my life I can't handle that. Can your church family help you find some kind of position? Even if it's one that starts out at minimum wage, maybe that would make enough of a difference. Wishing you the best and prayers that you get some help through your depression. There are some marvelous meds out there now that can help too. Do you have any kind of medical insurance? You do have a large compassionate family here at TDK who have been through many of your trials and can provide big shoulders and a welcoming ear. Hope you keep coming back to us.

paulajeanne: Ironically the company that laid me off somehow messed up and has me down as "retired" and thus says I have medical insurance for life--I didn't argue with them They paid in full to have my pacemaker replaced and I am on anti-depression drugs because I suffer from it. Normally I only take the "kiddie" version of 10mg but the last 6 months, I've doubled it to 20mg which is still less than the normal adult dosage. I hate not working. I've been volunteering with the governor's race here and with the local public TV but still. It's not quite the same thing is it?Most people guess me as at least 10 years younger than I am and I just don't feel ready to be put out to pasture.

Yankee, I'm local and have lived in the area for about 10 years. Don't know, but have you applied to Sprint for call center work? They now have one in the area. Don't know how much it pays, but Sprint lists their jobs online.
Other large employers in the area include the city & county, Sprint, Hallmark, H&R Block... if nothing else, H&R Block is hiring & training for tax season...
If you want to contact me, let me know; anngunther at yahoo dot com.

I have let the people leading the volunteers know that I am looking for a job and that when the time comes to expand the paid staff in the Governor's race to please keep me in mind. However, generally speaking those jobs go to college students/graduates whose families have given large donations to the campaigns and/or have political connections to the candidate. Not necessarily to someone from off the street.
At this point I need suggestions because I am not thinking straight. A church friend sent me a suggestion and it turned out there was a job listed there and I will ship out the information tomorrow. I'll tend them that I'm interested in the full time and the part time positions but to be honest Im probably more interested in the part time positions because it looks like it would be more interesting and more fun.

Yankee, Perhaps you should have a 2nd & 3rd party look at the resume you are handing out to potential employers. You are probably tired of looking at it, and you need a fresh set of eyes on it to help you edit it. Often the reason for not getting hired is a poorly presented resume. And don't limit the jobs based on fun or not. You are more hireable once you have a job than when you are unemployed. Take anything, full or part time, fun or NOT. The point is to get into a job ASAP.
Good luck hun, sorry you are having to go through this. I am by no means an expert, but I can try to help with the resume. TDKcookbook AT gmail DOT com -
