Does anyone know anything about newts, particularly firebellied newts? I had 2, but when I went to clean them out today, I found I'd lost one. As in, it's not in the tank at all. I know that they can climb glass, but ours had never shown any ability, or inclination, to do this! They mostly just hide under the water, its pretty rare to see them unless I'm cleaning them, which is why i didn't notice. My darling and I have pretty much torn the room apart looking for any sign of the little guy, but not a trace. He even removed the bottom panel from the bookcase we couldn't move in case he was under there. Does anyone have any suggestions on how we can possibly find the little guy, like what kind of area they might head to? Also, does anyone know if the other newt will get lonely?

Anyone know about newts?

Metsa, you had to figure it would be me to answer you! of course Son had newts as a child (what didn't he have!), and yes, a few times one of his got out........he would find them later that day, or sometimes a day or so later slithering across the room, or down the hall.... they don't move fast......my best advise would be to "bait" him with some food in the middle of the room he escaped in, so that he would have to come out to get it...... if you've handled them quite a lot, they will be less afraid (Son picked his up often)..... but even so, make them come out into the open, so that you will have time to "trap" him..... use a large plastic container (like a cake box) to put over him, once trapped, you will have control of reaching in and picking him up.....best of luck! BTW, how's the drawf hamster?

Lol AV! I did think about putting ur name in the title but I didn't want to scare away anyone else that might have advice :). Any idea how long a newt can live out the tank? We've fully searched the room he escaped into, unless he can climb walls. I think i might put out a tub of water, with a ramp so s/he can get in in case we have managed to miss it.
Sparky is ok, he seems to have a weepy eye today but I'mn going to se eif it settles down by itself over the next day or so, he was very stressed when I took him to the vet before. We were handling him tonight and letting him bite us, to get it out his system and let him learn what we are. Thats the plan anyway. He seems to really try to bite, but he can't break our skin, which surprises me. Anyway, I think he is getting more used to us, and by the time we put him back in the cage he didn't try to bite me again :). -
They're in a normal fish tank, but we had to cut holes in the corners for the pump cables etc. so the newt might well have escaped. I'm favouring that over been eaten by the other one, since its the (much) smaller one that's left, and there's not a trace of the other one in the tank. Hmm.

I had one when Cindy and I were first hitched and it got out .Cindy wasn't sure what she was watching crawl down the hallway until she relized that it had cleaned all the dust bunnies from arround the walls and was dragging them behind itself.Said she couldn't believe she picked it up to put it back in the tank . We used to feed it small live earth worms and it would go crazy tring to swollow them whole

LOL Ron!..... I hate to tell you this, but if it finds water and food sources, it could "lurk" for a long time!.... again, "baiting" it will be the best plan... put both food and water out, and just keep an eye out! It will most likely turn up when you least expect it! LOL

Also, you must seal that tank - it might be able to chew thru tape, we can get a silicone sealer here in the hardward store that you fill holes with , and it hardens around the tubing.... of course, you will need to make sure if you do that, that you wait until it's completely hardened and dry before putting him back in the tank..... maybe ask your pet store..... good luck!
