Do any other TDKers have this problem? I have to be very careful to close off rooms that are exposed to the sun if we're out of the house and miso (indoor cat, now 6 months old) is left alone, because she loves to lie on the window sill and soak up the sun. But of course the heat is magnified by the glass, and last week she was 'hunting' flies through the glass and got so absorbed that she didn't know she was hot until she came into the room where I was, with her tongue hanging out like a dog's, deep red, sides heaving, and flopped down, panting heavily and in obvious distress. I brought her up to the cool bathroom and put her in the sink, ran some cool water and splashed her a little. She improved immediately, and was soon fine again. Since then it's happened, to a lesser degree, once more, so now I am very vigilant about where she is, and putting blinds down and closing doors etc. The vet says cats should not pant, but I've read many descriptions of cats panting after vigorous exercise, which she also does, though only for a few minutes. Any similar experiences?

Morning Eleniki :) Mine pant when they have run around so much they are just exhausted, not feeling very well (at times), never had one do it from the sun/window but it wouldn't surprise me. Do you have access to the window coverings that block out some of the heat from coming in the window? You would still have the sunlight, just not the heat so she could still lie in the sun rays.

Hi Azdebra - funny, my partner and I were discussing that very possibility last night. I'll certainly do some research on it - as she's probably going to remain an indoor cat (because she has no mew, or only a teeny tiny one, and won't wear a collar, absolutely flat refuses - all hell breaks loose when I try with her and she ends up half-strangled). So, I want to give her as much indoor access as I can, but now the summer is on its way....

Shaddo, who inherited 8 of Smokie's lives and used them all in addition to his own, had a similar experience. He jumped into my truck on a summer day when I was getting out - obviously I didn't see him. A while later, I thought it was strange that he didn't "check in" like I required the boys to do and he also wasn't supervising a project hubby and his brother were doing outside. I called and called, and heard a barely audible croaking sound from my truck. It was really hot in there! He was panting heavily, paws and forearms soaked (apparently from drool; apparently cats don't have sweat glands, there anyway) and his tongue was really dark. I brought him inside and put him on the cool tile floor and put some cool water wet washclothes around him and a bit of tuna water nearby. Eventually (seemed like forever) he regained his strength and drank the water. He stayed inside the rest of the day!
