Sisal Scratching posts

  1. I was wondering what anyone does who uses sisal scrathing posts when the sisal is "used up". My four loved the one we had, but it was scratched to pieces and we couldn't figure out how to replace it. Didn't want to throw the whole thing away, but no choice. Not equiped to re-invent the wheel and do major re-sisaling!

AV posted a link to some nice sisal ones but since I'm not thrilled with just throwing those kind of things into a landfill, what's a person to do?

  2. Excellent question Linda! And great timing. I have one that is well used, and has started to unwind. I was able to tie it back in place for now. This is part of a small kitty-condo, and the carpet on the other post is also starting to fall off. I don't know how to reattach these ! Don't want to toss the whole thing, it's still in good shape othewise.

Sorry - don't have any answer, though

  3. I also have this same problem! Spent $150 on a nice kitty condo with a nice pole of sisel on the bottom. Alex, my big boy, runs down the living room steps and lands right at the pole and goes to town on it! If there is a way to replace just the sisel, I'd love to know as well because it sure beats him using my sofa instead!! :)

  4. That's ok 2P! Glad to hear someone else has the same issue! oh, and hot enough for you? It was 95 here yesterday and feels hotter today!

Hello Mary...welcome to TDK! Seems to be a universal issue then!

  5. We're supposed to hit 100 tomorrow *sigh* I really don't mind the heat. The office is cold I'm wearing a sweater ! Hard to believe it's 80+ out there and I'm in a sweater .... goofy!

Welcome Mary !!! Glad, too, it's not just me with the sisal.

  7. ...that is a very good question Linda! because my cats LOVE their sisal scratchers.... the first one I had wasn't even meant to be for cats, it was actually a sisal basket that I had an artifical plant in..... they absolutely loved to scratch on it, so I encouraged it, and they have never scratched anywhere else..... then, since they were used to sisal, when the basket fell apart, it was easy to switch them to a scratcher, since they loved the sisal so much..... next, I bought a sisal door matt at home depot, and that lasted quite a few years!.... recently, I bought Abby a real "scratcher" - its flat and has a loop that you would put around a chair leg or something so they can pull on it.... I keep it in my office, and she loves it. The sisal is wrapped around it, and when it gets worn, I think my husband might be able to replace it with a new piece of sisal - I'm thinking Home Depot or the like might sell it in yards because many people make rugs and matts out of it.... I don't think it would be too difficult, and I think he could reattached (wrap) it around the board (or post if that's what you have) with a heavy duty staple gun....

.... as far as the old sisal, I think there are people who rework old baskets and rugs, I usually donate everything (no matter how worn out) to my local Salvation Army or thrift store - they are good about recycling or reworking things.... you might even Craigs list it, I'm sure there are people out there that probably look for stuff to rework.....

  8. Here's a link to making a sisal scratching post. If you get some sisal (probably from a craft store or online)and a glue gun, I think you'd be able to rewrap your post.

  9. Here's a place where you can buy more rope to restring a cat scratcher.

We have one of those flat ones with a loop. We hang it on a door knob.

  10. Yep, I love 'em because they are so convenient, and I pack it in my suitcase when I take Abby on "stealth" missions!

  12. Yay! Mili and Chloe will be happy!
I was lucky - my kitty castle had one level that was way too high, so I never put it up. I have an extra post to replace another used one with.

You may also ask HLB for advice. Remember how she made a whole cat tree herself?
