We found four black and white newborn kittens under our deck. They were crying for two days so we brought them inside. The mother was found dead on the side of the road. One died the first night. Now we have three left. We work with them around the clock and it is very exhausting. As of this afternoon, one kitty has developed a little rattling sound when she purrs, plus coughing. Otherwise it seems fine. I don't want to lose the kitty because of my ignorance. The kitten that died was also making a rattling sound. Their eyes are open and they are walking. We are feeding them Nurturall-C that we purchased from the vet. So far, we have not actually taken the kittens to a vet. I would like to know if this is normal or if we should go to the vet. Thanks

Hi Purrbabies,no a rattle is not normal, they need to be seen by a vet, hopefully if you tell them how you found them they won't charge much to see them if you tell them that you will bring them back for their vaccines, etc. The babies might need an antibiotic to get better.
Thank you so much for rescuing these babies,I'm sorry to hear about the mother. -
The coughing isn't normal. Buttercup is right, take all of them to the vet, not just the one who coughs. If it's some sort of respiratory infection, it could spread to all of them.
We have a lot of kitty lovers who have hand raised kittens recently - you should get lots of good advice here.

Also do not hold the kittens on their backs while feeding. They often aspirate the feeding if not held as if they are feeding from their mother.

Here's how we held our kittens when we were bottle feeding them @ 3 and 4 weeks old:

Snuggle developed a little rattle when she purred (still does actually), but she also had a coughing issue after bottle feeding. The vet said it was probably a weak esophagus flap (I think that's what he said). In any event, have the vet check them out, especially with the coughing issue. It may or may not be serious, but he/she can tell better after the exam. Better safe than sorry.
