Newborn kitten

  1. Hi All,
a friend found a litter of kittens outside in the dog house, the litter was just born and still wet and cold...the mama kitty was feral and ran. All of the litter died except one. So on Easter Sunday, I drove out to pick him up because I wanted him and I have the time to care for him. I have named him Gallo the Gato. I have had him with me at all times or a kitty sitter. I have been looking all over the internet to make sure I am doing everything right. I have talked to the vet and he tells me that I am doing everything right. I just worry... Galllo is now 9 days old! He is drinking his bottle every 2 hours and pee pee and poop pooing. His eyes are starting to open. Right now he is in his box with a heating pad, bedding and a "mama kitty" that has a heartbeat.....I haven't had much sleep, but hubby lets me nap and he takes over..I just want to know if I am doing everything right???

  2. Oh my goodness,YES!It sounds like you've done a great job. If he's alert and awake, eating, peeing, pooping and going strong you've been a wonderful kitty momma. This kitty is actually going to bond closely with you and think that you are his mom. I just hand raised 2 kitty boys and they follow me around and sit in my lap and gaze adoringly into my eyes.
At 8 weeks he should be ready for his first battery of kitty vaccines.
Have you done this before? Because you've done a great job.
    Welcome to TDK!!
I'm sorry about the rest of the babies but you've given this one a great chance and it is hard work.

  4. Oh, you are doing everything right! I am so glad you've decided to take care of the little one. Gallo the Gato is exceptionally lucky to have you. My kitty was only 5 days old when I rescued her and today she is thriving. Born back in October 2007. So, don't worry. While it is all hard work, watching him grow before your eyes worth all the sleepless nights!

  9. Sounds like you're doing great!

Just a few ideas... you want to make sure he doesn't have parasites. Sounds like you've been to the vet, but I just wanted to check. Earmites, worms, intestinal parasites, and of course, fleas. A paper towel sprayed with flea spray can be rubbed over Gallo's fur, but the spray is too strong for him right now, so don't put it directly on his fur.

Also, keep him clean with baby wipes or with gentle baths with antibacterial soap and lukewarm water. After the bath, wrap him up like a burrito and dry him with a low-heat blow dryer and towels.

Thanks for taking care of this little baby!

  10. Foster Mom....thanks for the advice...I have a great relationship with my vet...they have been great and helpful!...I have been using baby wipes to clean him because I didn't want him to get a chill...He loves to be wrapped up like a taco as my husband puts it!..

  21. whoo hoo.... it worked! yes, that is little Gallo...that is him my belly is full and I am tired!....he is sleeping longer is that normal? he is doing great, but I thought I'd ask...And his eyes are open!!! when are his ears going to open??

Posted 3 years ago by opahall #

  22. Oh, what a little cutie he is!

Posted 3 years ago by NNGM #

  23. His ears may take a while to pop up, about three weeks is when they are "fully extended", or a little later.

He looks so sweet!!! I can't believe how cute he is! Thanks for working so hard!

And yes, sleeping is normal. Growing is hard work, and he needs to sleep a lot each day to make up for it.

    Have fun!

Posted 3 years ago by FosterMom #

  24. And then when he is grown he will sleep some more... preferably on you!

  28. HI All
I wanted to update on Gallo...He is doing great!Just like any baby is always held and everyone fights to feed, but when it comes time to potty everyone hands him off to mom... I haven't been feeling well so hubby has stepped up and filled in. When he hears me he cries for me....the dogs seem to check on him and alert us to his needs....the other cats are just now going "what is that" hiss and walk away...My JW, thinks that is my mew mew!!! but he is working through it...

Posted 3 years ago by opahall #

  29. OMG he's simply adorable. You are doing an amazing job, keep up the great work.
