Newborn kitten

  1. Hi, I am in a similar situation. I have an orphaned kitten too. He had a sister but she died at the age of 3 days unfortunately. I think she may have been sick. I found both kittens when they were a few hours old on a cold cement floor. They were both really cold and I thought they were already dead. They were premature too by their size (approx 60gms each). Both drank well and were doing fine but during the second night I had them, the girl kitten got sick. When I got up in the morning she was barely moving and she was really yellow instead of pink. I went to warm the hot water bottle up again and when I got back she was gone. I was a bit upset but all the more determined to keep her brother alive. He's now 9 days old and going really well. I keep him in a small plastic crate with a hot water bottle and a towel. I feed him powdered milk from the vets every 3-4 hours and give him water between (as per vets advice). He's very lively and kicks me whenever I try to toilet him lol. I've never raised a kitten from so young but I'm really happy at how he's going. His eyes and ears aren't open yet but hopefully they will be soon. He's started purring too in the last few days. It's very faint but definitely a purr, especially when I feed him. I gave him a warm bath tonight though because he was getting very grubby from going to the toilet sometimes when I'm not holding him. Surprisingly, he appeared to like it because he was purring while I was holding him in the water lol. I've been mixing a tiny bit of cat probiotics in with his milk and also some colloidal silver (natural antibiotic) to keep him strong, and putting a mild antiseptic ointment on his bottom. He has a bit of a red, sore bottom (nappy rash as I call it) but the ointment has been helping. Well, I thought I'd share my experience too. Glad to hear I'm not the only one raising a furred friend. It's hard work, but very rewarding, especially when they purr, thinking you're their mother. It makes me feel happy. I don't have any children yet (well not the human kind) but raising him, almost makes me feel clucky lol. Good luck and hope your baby makes it :D

  3. Good work LP,sounds like you're doing a great job. I don't know about the colloidal silver,I know when people take it it turns their skin silver(maybe they're taking too much,I don't know. I'm not that familiar with it.)
    Hopefully you can post a picture as your avatar? We would love to see the baby.

  4. Thanks for the encouragement. My bf has a few pics of the kitten on his computer so I'll try and get one posted online soon. I'm excited, his eyes are starting to open now. Just a tiny glimpse of eyeball so far. The reason people's skin turns silver when they take colloidal silver is because they take too much also. The tiny amount I'm giving him won't hurt him.

  5. I'm devastated. My little kitten died last night. He'd been really well until yesterday. He didn't drink much yesterday and last night night he seemed like he was constipated. He was trying to go to the toilet but couldn't and was meowing in pain. I massaged his belly and bottom with vaseline hoping it would help but it was getting worse. He wasn't moving very much. I decided to take him to the vets but he was gone before we even got there. I only had him 2 weeks but I was so attached to him. I didn't like having to get up during the night to feed him but I'd do anything to have him back and I miss feeding him. I guess he's at peace now and he wasn't meant to live. Good luck to anyone else trying to raise a little furred friend and if anything's wrong take them to the vet straight away. I wish I'd taken him sooner but I didn't think it was anything too serious until he stopped moving and was having trouble breathing.

  7. Thanks Binxbaby. I'm feeling really lost today and yesterday was just a horrible day full stop, everything went wrong. It almosts feels like I've lost a baby or something, I've never felt like this before, I don't usually get so attached to animals when they're that young. I just feel really empty, it's weird. Not trying to pour out my feelings here or anything but it's hit me pretty hard. I think a part of it is that my partner and I have been trying to concieve for about 18 months with no luck and having a baby, all be it a furred one, was taking my mind of everything and giving me something to love and look after. I've got 2 other kittens here with their mum and a puppy too but it's not the same because they're not totally dependent on me like the kitten was. Sorry if I've said to much but it feels good to get it off my chest, most people around me don't know about our situation so I can't explain to them why I feel so lost at the moment. Thanks for the support.

  8. LP, I'm so so sorry to hear about your little one, my heart goes out to you. I've lost foster kittens too and it hurts so much. Unfortunately, it is very hard to keep little stray or feral kittens alive, especially when they are so young, without their mum and it sounds like the odds might have been stacked against him from the start, with his sister dying. They might both have had problems or a virus you knew nothing about. But you gave him warmth and food and SO MUCH love and care and you gave him a fighting chance. He was so lucky you found him. {{{HUGS}}}. I wish there were something comforting I could say. You are a wonderful person for doing all you did.

  9. I'm so sorry LP,it's so easy to get attached to the little babies. [[[[Hugs]]]]
    They're very frail at that age and like Jcat said sometimes there's something wrong with them and there's nothing you can do even if you had rushed him to the vet.
    I know that I believe and many here do that our beloved pets pass on to a better place and we will see them again,restored and healthy.

    This baby knew love and warmth thanks to you. [[[[More hugs]]]]
    Take time to grieve the little one and don't let anyone tell you that you shouldn't because he was just a little cat.

  10. LP, so sorry for your loss. Don't worry about pouring out your feelings, this is the place to do that. We understand... Know that you gave that kitty love and the best care you could. sometimes it's hard to understand natures ways.

  11. Oh my, LP! I am so sorry for your loss. {{{HUGS}}}} I know that you did everything for this little one...It is very normal to feel the way you feel and never be afraid of showing your feelings. I lost my sweet boxer girl in Feb. and there are times I feel the same way that you described.... {{{{{hugs}}}}}
