  1. Wow! You all are wonderful! Ally is doing good this morning. She seems to be herself. I think I've figured out what could have possibly caused it though. I noticed this morning that she keeps running away from the kids and hiding. I think maybe one of them shook her or was too rough with her. This kills me because it was something that could have been prevented if I hadn't been so trusting that they wouldn't do something like that. I actually caught my daughter shaking her earlier last week. It must have been to late, because after that she wasn't allowed to pick her up. The only thing about her seizure that makes me wonder if it was a seizure is she didn't twitch/shake. Her muscles just contorted, kinda like in slow motion, or maybe I just thought it was slow motion because I was so freaked? I called the vet this morning, and he said just to wait and see if she has another one, and if so then he would see her. I don't think my vet wants to make any money at all!

  2. I'm so sorry to hear about Ally's seizure but thrilled to hear that she is doing well this morning. Perhaps you can sit down and calmly talk with your children about how shaking a kitten is not good and can really hurt her. That's wonderful that your vet does not want to take money from you; so many vets are unfortunately in it for the money it seems. Keep us updated and I hope Ally keeps it up and stays nice and healthy! Big hugs

  4. When Bobby had his seizure (I only witnessed one, but knew from the way he was acting that he'd had a second one while I was at work), he lay on his side and was difinitely twitching with his muscles contorting. He was unconscious and couldn't hear me. It was so bad, I thought he was choking on something. I stuck my fingers in his mouth in case he'd swallowed something and was bitten to the point where my whole hand swelled up and I needed a course of antibiotics and a tetanus shot.
He didn't lose his bowels the first time, but he peed himself the second time. Also, he was sweating enough to kind of make a puddle where he lay. The seizure itself lasted about 2-3 minutes.

  5. That sounds like what happened. I, too, thought she was choking. I started rubbing her throat, but quickly figured out that something else was wrong. How many seizures has Bobby had?

  7. He's had two, LB. After the first one, he had all kinds of tests and they didn't find anything wrong with him. The vet told me it was likely a one-time occurance, which happens with some frequency in cats. He told me no meds were needed unless it happened again. About 6 weeks later I came home from work and just knew he'd had another one. He was jumpy and scared, he smelled weird, he was lethargic, I found some pee on the floor, and Milo was avoiding him again.
I took him to the vet again, who now concluded it must be a seizure disorder. He asked me if I was okay with putting him on meds, because I had to commit to giving him a pill every day, twice a day. I wasn't crazy about the meds, but I was getting worried about leaving him. I didn't want him seizing on top of the kitty castle and fallinf and hitting his head, or from the windowsill, etc. So we decided on the meds.
He hasn't had a seizure since he started them. I'm not sure of the exact time, but I think it was probably around July that he had the last seizure and we started the meds.

I took him to an emergency vet when he had the first seizure, because it was at 4am and his regular vet was closed. They printed out reading material for me to read over. This is what they gave me:

  8. How much does the medication cost?

Posted 3 years ago by linksboomerang #

  9. It's pretty cheap, LB. I just got more pills this morning. I got 30 pills for $8.00 and I believe it would be even less if I got them from a pharmacy rather than the vet.
When I started Bobby on the pills, he got 1/2 a pill twice a day, so 30 in a month. When his levels were tested 6 weeks later, they were too low to protect him from a seizure, so we doubled the dose to a full pill twice a day. That ended up being too much and now he gets 3/4 of a pill twice a day. So right now, the 30 pills at $8.00 last us about 3 weeks.

  10. That isn't bad, but they probably won't prescribe the medication without running all the tests.

  11. I'd say keep an eye on her and if it doesn't happen again, she's probably fine. If it does, she should probably have the tests. I had Bobby's blood tested, but I didn't do the x-ray and brain scan they were talking about. The vet said if he continued having seizures after being on the meds, he should go to the kitty neurologist and have his brain tested for a tumor. He said it wasn't needed in the beginning because it's very rare for such a young cat to have a brain tumor. (He was 1 1/2 at the time).
So I saved money on the tests and the blood test was reasonable.

Since Ally is so little, she would need a very low dose of the meds, which would make the pills last longer and save you some money, too.

Your vet sounds like he's not too interested in taking your money, so he's probably make sure you didn't end up with a huge bill or tests you don't really need.

  12. I thought my vet was just being rude...lol. But now I see why he is acting this way, which I am grateful for! You have really comforted me and gave some great advice. Thank you so much!

  17. Hi, just catching up on Baby Ally! Glad she is better today. I have to say when my Molly had her seizure I thought she was choking. She then did that sort of "wave motion" throughout her body like all her muscles were contracting and relaxing. She got the far away look in her eyes and her pupils were funny. She too, was a little "off" for a few days. Thank God she never ever had another one but the doc still keeps an eye on her. I pray your kids didn't shake her or handle her rough. Some times kids don't realize how fragile a kitten or puppy is. Keep us posted, I am thrilled she is doing well again!

  18. That is exactly what Ally did. My kids know now that I mean business when it comes to Ally. I've not seen them touch her all day. My children are 3 and 4, so they wouldn't know any better, but my stupidity for thinking they would! When I saw Ally's eyes I thought she was dieing. They were fixed and far away just like you said. She's been sleeping a little more than usual today and been stumbly.

  19. In my humble opinion, I think you should have her checked out. If she has nything like 'Shaken baby syndrome", she really should be observed closely under medical supervision. Did you mention to the vet about the possible shaking?
    Anyway, just my thoughts....

  20. I did mention it. He said since she is coming in in a couple of weeks for shots/deworming that he would check her then. He really wants to see if another one occurs before we get worried.
