wet food NOT list of best to worst just brands that i am looking at:
back to basics: grain free but fourth ingrediant is cranberries...first ingredinats are chicken, chicken broth, chicken liver. no taurine listed in guarenteed anylisis

evo Ingredients:
Chicken, Chicken Broth, Turkey, Natural Flavors, Carrageenan, Minerals, Guar Gum, Vitamins, Choline Chloride, Herring Oil, Salt, Potassium Chloride, Sodium, Ascorbate, Taurine, Sunflower Oil, Sodium Phosphate, Beta Carotene

I have some questions for you Furryfriend. My local pet store carries a couple brands of wet food that you mentioned in the other thread and so I thought I would buy them to check them out.
Chicken Soup for the Cat lover's soul: Canned 156grams per can.
Ingredients: Chicken, Salmon, Chicken Liver, Turkey, Duck, Chicken Broth, Whole GraiN Brown Rice, White Rice, Oatmeal, Potatoes, Barley, Egg Product, Guar Gum, Flaxseed Meal, Kelp, Carrots, Peas, Apples, Dried Skim Milk, Cranberry Powder, Rosemary Extract, Parsley Flake, Taurine, Dried Chicory Root, Carrageenan Gum, Vitamin A Acetate, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Vitamin B Supplement, Niacin Supplement, D-Calcium Pantothenate, Riboflavin Supplement, Thiamine Mononitrate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Biotin, Folic Acid, Copper Sulfate, Calcium Iodate, and sodium Selenite.
Guaranteed Analysis: Crude Protein Min 11.0%, Crude Fat Min 5.5%, Crude Fiber Max 1.0%, Moisture Max 78.0%.
Calorie Content: 1,347 Kcals/KG (210 KCAL/Can)
For this brand I noticed that
1. Whole grain brown rice. This isn't included in other brands that say Grain Free. Is this a typical ingredient that we don't want in the food?
2. I noticed you said in a post earlier that Carrageenan was bad for cats. If this is so, is this a bad brand to be buying?
3. The measurements on this are fuzzy because they don't clearly state what their numbers represent. Do I assume that when it says: Up to 4 months 1-2, this means 1-2 cans a day?Wellness: Beef & Chicken Formula (Grain Free)
Ingredients: Beef, Chicken Liver, Chicken, Chicken Broth, Carrots, Sweet Potatoes, Squash, Zucchini, Natural Chicken Flavor, Dicalcium Phosphate, Cranberries, Blueberries, Guar Gum, Carrageenan, Ground Flaxseed, Potassium Chloride, Calcium Carbonate, Taurine, Iron Proteinate (a source of Chelated Iron), Beta-Carotene, Zinc Proteinate (a source of Chelated Zinc), Vitamin E Supplement, Choline Chloride, Cobalt Proteinate (a source of Chelated Cobalt), Thiamine Mononitrate, Copper Proteinate (a source of Chelated Copper), Folic Acid, Manganese Proteinate (a source of Chelated Manganese), Niacin, d-Calcium Pantothenate, Sodium Selenite, Vitamin D-3 Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin Supplement, Vitamin A Supplement, Vitamin B-12 Supplement, Potassium Iodide, Biotin.
Guaranteed Analysis: Crude Protein Min. 10.0%, Crude Fat Min. 5.0%, Crude Fiber Max. 1.0%, Moisture Max. 78.0%, Ash Max. 1.95%, Magnesium Max. 0.025%, Taurine Min. 0.10%
For This brand I noticed:
1. This also contains Carrageenan.I would like to know what you think about both of these brands. I would also like for you to let me know which brand of wet food you believe is the best quality. I also need some clarification on just exactly what the Instinct brand Freeze Dried Raw food is, such as how it comes in the package and how I would serve it or prepare it. Also if you think that the raw alternative is better than a wet food alternative.
Long post, but you seem to know what you are doing and I need some assistance. Thanks for your time.
-
I also forgot to ask what percentage amounts of Crude Protein, Crude Fiber, and so on I should be looking for in these foods. I noticed that the Evo brand cat food (I think its dry, or kibble. I am somewhat confused on this) has crude protein percents in the 50% range, and Crude fat around 22%. This seems much higher than the canned food alternatives. I need some clarification if possible.
Thanks
-Jacob -
wet food appears to have less protein but that is because they figure out the protein on a wet matter basis. dry food they figure it out once it is all cooked so its dry.
so a brand of dry cat food could be 45% protein but the same brand could have a wet that is 10% protien. to figure out how much protein would be in the wet food if it were dry you need to multipy it by four.
example: 11% protein in wet food * four is 44% on dry matter basis
multiplying by four tends to make it pretty exact.
does that make any sense lol?!?! i am bad at explaining stuff like that...there is a website that explains better than i can that i can try find if you want.

Most of the "best foods" on the list contain carrageenan. Does this no longer make them good foods to use do you think? Seems next to impossible to find what's best.
How about the Dick van Patten foods?, can't recall the name...are you familiar with them?Posted 2 years ago by Tigerlilly #

I have figured out the Crude Protein and what not problem i was having. What you said also works. Do you have any advice for my post above my last one? I found a few Feline Nutritionist's that rank Natural Balance Canned Premium brand at the top of their lists. My local pet shop may stock this brand if I ask them to, but I wonder if I could just get it cheaper myself online.
-
@Tigerlilly It's odd that I didn't see your post before my last one. The Natural Balance brand that I mention is actually Dick van Patten's brand. I haven't read in depth ingredient list yet to see if it contains Carrageenan but I will take a look. It seems like it may be promising.
-
It looks to me that all of the Natural Balance ingredients contain Carrageenan. I have done no research other than what Furryfriend has posted as to why Carrageenan is not good for cats, so I am not sure what to think. Here is the Natural Balance website with ingredients list.
http://www.naturalbalance.net/catformulas/NB_CatCanned.html#Ingredients -
natural balance IS a good wet food but i haven't used it before.
ingrediants of one flavor: Ingredients:
Chicken, Poultry Liver, Chicken Broth, Carrots, Eggs, Sodium Tripolyphosphate, Lecithin, Potassium Chloride, Salt, Guar Gum, Taurine, Carrageenan, Zinc Sulfate, Iron Sulfate, Vitamin E Supplement, Copper Sulfate, Manganese Sulfate, Niacin Supplement, Sodium Selenite, Thiamine Mononitrate, Calcium Pantothenate, Calcium Iodate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6), Riboflavin, Vitamin A Supplement, Folic Acid, Vitamin K Supplement, Biotin, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement.some cats don't like the carrots but else it is a good food. carrageenan is in it i need to check if it really is bad b/c i could have it mixed up with something else lol!
Posted 2 years ago by furryfriends50 #
-
i could have carrageenan mixed up with something else though so don't trust me on that lol! i can try check though

okay this is all i can find: "Carrageenan. This is a food thickener that can cause ulcerative colitis and other stomach problems. However, this ingredient is used in the new EVO canned products (95% meat) (among other products), and the advice I've received is that you have to weigh the overall benefits of the great food against a small amount of this ingredient which might cause digestive upsets. If you're faced with the choice of carageenan or an inferior quality food, go with the carrageenan. The same is true for GARLIC which is (still) present in Wellness."
so i think it is fine such it isn't much at all in the food.

Good news FF50. I just checked my bags of evo and innova (dry) that I bought today to try them out and neither of them has carageenan listed. Maybe they took it out. I also did google it and it is probably better to avoid it.
Thanks againPosted 2 years ago by Tigerlilly #

All I have found about carrageenan from Holistic food forums says that in the Wellness brand it is possible that Carrageenan caused diarrhea in some kittens. Overall, other brands mentioned to have Carrageenan on the forum do not seem to be causing any problems. I am going to go ahead and stick with foods that may have Carrageenan in them until i notice any problems.
Question: Would the Whole Grain Brown rice in Chicken soup be an ingredient that I want to avoid and stop buying this brand?
-
sorry i didn't see your long post until now!
first chicken soup: Ingredients:
Chicken, salmon, chicken liver, turkey, duck, chicken broth, whole grain brown rice, whole grain white rice, oatmeal, potatoes, barley, egg product, guar gum, flaxseed, kelp, carrots, peas, apples, dried skim milk, cranberry powder, rosemary extract, parsley flake, dried chicory root, taurine, vitamin A acetate, vitamin D3 supplement, vitamin E supplement, niacin supplement, d-calcium pantothenate, riboflavin supplement, thiamin mononitrate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, vitamin B12 supplement, biotin, folic acid, copper sulfate, calcium iodate, and sodium selenite.i think it is still a good wet food for sure. the rice is lower down on the list of ingrediants so there isn't much in it. i wonder about the dried skim milk though because most cats can not digest milk unless they are kittens. rosemary extract i found under a list of harmful ingrediants when i was reading Whole Health for Happy Cats, it was listed along with carrageenen i think.
"For this brand I noticed that
1. Whole grain brown rice. This isn't included in other brands that say Grain Free. Is this a typical ingredient that we don't want in the food?

3. The measurements on this are fuzzy because they don't clearly state what their numbers represent. Do I assume that when it says: Up to 4 months 1-2, this means 1-2 cans a day?"kittens need as much wet food as they will eat but most adult cats do fine with one 5.5 ounce can (or less) a day. some cats eat more if they are more active.
"Wellness: Beef & Chicken Formula (Grain Free)

between wellness and chicken soup i think the chicken soup is the better choice since it has more meat in it than wellness and less veggies.
i am not quite sure what the intinct freeze dried raw is but i can check if you want, gives me something to do during study hall LOL!
Raw IS better than wet. i've been feeding half raw now for three weeks and my barn cats are so much differant acting instead of getting half wet. though if you do raw yourself you have to do it right. also i found it cheaper than feeding friskies to feed raw. i do raw myself, and buy the meat from a grocery store.

I just read through your thread FurryFriend, and WOW, you're awesome!
I've tried several different cat foods for my boys, and we've stopped with Chicken Soup and Wellness Core (Not sure if the Core's the same "quality" as the wellness from your link).Wellness Core:
Deboned Turkey, Deboned Chicken, Chicken Meal, Whitefish Meal, Potatoes, Salmon Meal, Natural Chicken Flavor. Chicken Fat (preserved with Mixed Tocopherols, a natural source of Vitamin E), Tomato Pomace, Cranberries, Chicory Root Extract, Salmon Oil, Flaxseed, Vitamins (Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin, Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), Thiamine Mononitrate, Calcium Pantothenate, Riboflavin, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Beta-Carotene, Vitamin A Supplement, Vitamin D-3 Supplement, Folic Acid, Biotin, Vitamin B-12 Supplement), Choline Chloride, Minerals (Zinc Proteinate, Zinc Sulfate, Iron Proteinate, Ferrous Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Copper Proteinate, Manganese Proteinate, Manganese Sulfate, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite), Yucca Schidigera Extract, Dried Kelp, Taurine, Lactobacillus Plantarum, Enterococcus Faecium, Lactobacillus Casei, Lactobacillus Acidophilus, Rosemary Extract.I feed Wellness Wet food, but haven't tried the wet Core, since it's 20 cents more a can, and I already spend $20 a week on just the wet cat food.
Should I invest in Wellness CORE Wet Food?? The ingredients are:
Chicken, Turkey, Chicken Broth, Chicken Liver, Chicken Meal, Turkey Liver, Dried Ground Potatoes, Natural Chicken Flavor, Guar Gum, Carrageenan, Cranberries, Ground Flaxseed, Salmon Oil, Taurine, Dried Kelp, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Chicory Root Extract, Iron Proteinate, Zinc Proteinate, Vitamin E Supplement, Choline Chloride, Cobalt Proteinate, Copper Proteinate, Manganese Proteinate, Thiamine Mononitrate, Folic Acid, Niacin, Sodium Selenite, d-Calcium Panthothenate, Vitamin D-3 Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin Supplement, Vitamin A Supplement, Potassium Iodide, Vitamin B-12 Supplement, Biotin.Regular Turkey Wellness Ingredients:
Turkey, Chicken Liver, Chicken, Chicken Broth, Carrots, Natural Chicken Flavor, Sweet Potatoes, Squash, Zucchini, Cranberries, Blueberries, Guar Gum, Carrageenan, Ground Flaxseed, Potassium Chloride, Calcium Carbonate, Dicalcium Phosphate, Taurine, Iron Proteinate (a source of Chelated Iron), Beta-Carotene, Zinc Proteinate (a source of Chelated Zinc), Vitamin E Supplement, Choline Chloride, Cobalt Proteinate (a source of Chelated Cobalt), Thiamine Mononitrate, Copper Proteinate (a source of Chelated Copper), Folic Acid, Manganese Proteinate (a source of Chelated Manganese), Niacin, d-Calcium Pantothenate, Sodium Selenite, Vitamin D-3 Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin Supplement, Vitamin A Supplement, Vitamin B-12 Supplement, Potassium Iodide, Biotin.Posted 2 years ago by Niki and Charlie #
