  2. How old is he? If he's an adult, he may be eating too fast, and there's not much you can do about that unless you want to feed him just a bit at a time. I'm not sure what you're trying, but with kittens, I put them over my shoulder and pat their little backs. Also, make sure your cat has plenty of fresh water in a non-plastic container. Change the water daily, and wash the dish often. It may be that your cat is not getting enough water.

  3. Julia, I'm assuming your little peanut is a baby kitten. When we took in our 7 babies last fall, they were about 3 weeks old. Alicia had the duty of feeding them with a bottle, then she passed the kitten on to me to burp.

I never had real children, so when I was faced with the task I just did what I though would work.

Here's how I did it. I held the kitten with both hands around the body thumbs down, head facing me, with the kitten's tummy down. My thumbs GENTLY rubbed the kittens tummy up and down length wise. The key is very gently. Do not squeeze. Just a gentle petting with the thumbs. It didn't take long, generally a minute or two. You'll know it when it happens. :)

If it's an adult cat, he or she will burp on their own, eventually.

  4. Hi Julia, glad Peanut is doing well.
Wow, I don't know about burping. I fostered 3 baby kittens last year and I can honestly say that I never had to burp them.

  5. Kitty will only burp when air is in the stomach. When air bubbles in the stomach reach the esophagus they will travel up and out (a burp) which is why kitty is "burping him/herself". If a gentle massage after eating does not produce a burp, there is nothing to be concerned about unless there is obvious discomfort. That would most likely mean colic. Then you want to try to ease the distress. Warmth and again gentle massage are the best solutions but don't expect a burp every time.
