  1. Were you familiar with the legend of Henry and Eleanor before reading this book? How does Ms. Franklin's portrayal of them compare to others you have read or seen? Did you learn anything about them that surprised you?

  2. Hi! I had not heard of the troubles between Eleanor and Henry before reading the book. I didn't realize it was true until I got to the end of the book and saw that this was based on a true story. I wanted to go back through and read it again then knowing it was true. I think there was some literature license given to the story as I am sure we don't know the whole story! I was surprised at how they were both so strong, Eleanor being a woman in such olden times. Women were not well respected but she as the queen was.

  3. I was not aware of that history either. It was an interesting relationship; Henry must have respected her since he didn't just have her killed. He seemed to be more progressive in his thinking, maybe that is why.

  5. Henry would never had wanted her dead by his hands because of Thomas Becket's murder. Because of what he said knights slaughtered him, and the people were outraged at the death of the Archbiship of Canterbury. The people loved Eleanor because of her wealth. She could afford large households, even while imprisoned--it wasn't her husband's lands or money. One of the very few woman that had their own means.

  6. this book is historically accurate, from what we know of royal life right down to how the common people lived and to the attitudes towards women. women had absolutely no rights what so ever. a man could kill his women or girl children with no consequenses what so ever...

so many movies and fiction books are not accurate. i have found numerous discrepancies in "The Tudors" series as well as movies like "anne of the thousand days". it's refreshing to have stories that are accurate...

  8. Good information Cheri. Thank you I like for stories to be accurate, too and they so seldom are.

  9. I remember some of the story of Henry and Eleanor from the play The Lion In Winter, but this historically accurate tale really fills in the blanks and brings their personalities to life. It also gave me the feeling that life was stressful in those times even if you were a powerful king or queen. Royalty could have more creature comforts but their life was always at risk.

  10. I did not know the history of Henry and Eleanor. I did, however, pick up on Eleanor's strength as well as her excentric ways (keeping vigil over Rosamund's body). Needless to say, everything I read about them surprised and enlightened me.

  11. I am really trying to get through this book but having trouble with some of the historical facts and detail. I get so bogged down I keep putting it down. I guess it is time to move on to the Whistling Season...Hopefully I can get through that one quicker...lol

  12. The book was tough for me to get thru also, but got to a point where I really got into it, then I couldn't put it down.

  13. ... I have read many historical fiction series, and enjoyed this one!.... A. Franklin's writing style is one that I had to concentrate on to follow, but I did enjoy it!...... I like her "twist" on the Henry/Eleanor relationship, and I also enjoyed her takes on the "treatment" of women in those times!.... Must have been so tough for strong ladies, like our heroine, I'm not sure I could have held my tongue in check as well as she did!.... LOL... but then again, my head would probably have been on a pike!...
