I was named NIE Teacher of the Year. I would like to have had a pat on the back or a kind word from administration, but they don't even acknowledge I have the award. It was presented to me during my advisory class, that was more special than they will ever know. That particular group of my students spend 2 class periods with me--they are a very special group of kids. I am glad I got to share that with them.

Thanks MC. I know it is about the kids, but it hurt that I wasn't even congratulated by a single administrator. Not even one teacher in the entire staff knew until the kids started talking about it and then they asked. My team said they were so sorry they had no idea. Trust me it took my whole team and every kid pulling their own weight to make the gains we have. We all earned that award together--just would be nice if there was more than about 30 people that knew.
You are right though MC--I was with special kids and that is what will always matter most.

Oh, my goodness - why am I not surprised????? My most sincere CONGRATULATIONS to you, SM! I have known for a long time what an outstanding teacher you are. How fortunate are your students??? Well, I will tell you. You have given them the gift of a questioning mind and intellect. It will serve them well for their entire lives. And when they are old and gray, they will remember the teacher that touched their lives.
SM, rest assured. There ARE more than 30 people who know. Every student that you have touched in a classroom knows. I know that the recognition and accolades would be appreciated. But in those quiet moments when it is just you and your thoughts, remember that you have helped to shape their future. What could be more important than that?

Thank you all. Since it was Cinco De Mayo and specials at Leal's we had to go and have dinner! Cheese enchiladas and green sauce is my favorite--not to mention a magarita or two! Ran into a student--he said that's the one that got the award--I like her. That was worth more than gold!

YOU ROCK, SM. I'm so happy for you that you got this award esp after having had such a hard year. I know how you feel about the adminstraters lack of congratulations. I've worked with a man for 28 years and he is moving on. He is in an important position so he sent out a company wide letter mentioning many people over the years. Some who were only there for a short time most of them men no mention of me. Being a woman in a man dominated profession you'd think I'd be used to it by now--woman have to work twice as hard for half the recognition. But it does hurt. Sorry to go on I just had to vent a little.

Vent and be at peace CTR because I agree 100%. I have watched friends, men and women, and have see those in business and industry treated differently. It seems sad the you have to all but stand on your head to have someone notice you, but the good ole boy network is busy slapping pats on backs.
