  1. I'm afraid that we could use a bit of that famous TDK white light just now. My mom has been in the nursing care center at her retirement complex for several weeks. Her problems with chronic leukemia and anemia have come back, and she just doesn't have the strength and energy she used to have. She has been having to have blood transfusions every 2 - 4 weeks. The doctor is now treating her and she is doing a bit better, but is still unable to really get up and walk on her own, or do any of the things she would need to do in order to continue to live independently. She was told by the social worker at her complex that she is going to have to move out of her apartment by July 1st. This is absolutely devastating for her; she loves that apartment and really cherished her independence. I don't know what the long term plan is - whether they are thinking that she will now permanently stay in the nursing care center, or whether they are hoping she can eventually move up to assisted living. Either way, this is a huge blow for her, and she could really use your prayers and white light to help her get through this.

    Thank you, my friends! The TDK family really is the best!

    I'm so sorry to hear this, Rubia. Do you know if she would be able to stay in her apartment if she got stronger by July? Whatever the situation is, I wish her strength to deal with whatever it is that comes next for her. And hugs for you.

  9. Rubia, I am so sorry to hear this. It is never easy to see our parents age, and it must be even harder for them to know it and have to give up their independence. I will keep her and you in my prayers.

  11. Rubia, I am so sorry to hear of your mom's condition and its affect on her living situation. Would she be able to stay in her apartment if she had a live-in companion? Sometimes the home health agencies have lists of people who do that.

    She will be in my prayers.

  12. Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers. Unless she makes some sort of miraculous recovery and really gets her strength back quickly, I don't think there is any way that she would be able to stay in her current apartment. The staff at the place where she lives have been dancing around the idea of moving her to Assisted Living for several months now. She's spent a lot of time this past year in and out of the nursing care center, and with each incident that has put her in there, she was bouncing back less and less well. So, the best she can hope for is Assisted Living. That is still pretty good. They have people who come and help you get out of bed in the morning, make sure you're taking all your medications, help with bathing, dressing, etc. etc. But she would still have a measure of independence... I think. The thing she really hates about that idea is that she would lose her current apartment. She loves that apartment because she has a really nice view and she can watch everything that goes on across the road at the community center and stuff. Up in Assisted Living, her view would be of the swimming pool. Not very nice at all. But she is a very strong woman and always tries to think of the positive side of things. So I'm sure she would rather be in Assisted Living than in the nursing care center. Let's just hope that the long term plan IS to move her to Assisted Living, and not to just keep her in the nursing care center.

    I know how hard it is to deal with - my mom is still living in her own home for now and driving - which scares the hell out of me - she is terrified behind the wheel and yet won't give it up - she lives alone and cant do the yard work or pool work but refuses to accept that she needs help. All we can do is pray for them and just be there when needed, and hope the help is finally accepted.

  15. This is such sad news Rubia. =(
    My heart goes out to you and Mom. Moms' give us so many hard working, loving years and to reach this point in time where the strength and vigor leave them has to be the most devastating experience in all their life. I saw this devastation in my own mother's eyes as she lost her life to cancer many years ago. Sending prayers to you and mom and all the TDK white light I can muster. {{{Hugs}}}

  17. Adding my prayers for you and your mom, Rubia. My MIL and FIL still live in their own home (he's 97 and she's in her late 80's) but have also had to begin thinking about alternatives; it's so hard for them and for the family. {{{Rubia & Mom}}}

  19. Rubia, I have had lots of experience with Assisted Living and have learned a lot the hard way. I'm not sure that everyone here would be interested in the ins and outs of evaluating assisted living. If you would like, please just email me.
