  1. I work in an office that has low ceilings and not much natural light coming in due to high walled cubicles. My neighbor in the next cubicle is a loud eater. He seems to be eating all the time. He eats crunchy cereal for breakfast at his desk with smacking his lips, a crunchy salad or he has something to drink with ice in it (which he makes sure he crunches on the ice) and he slurps his drink. I think he eats with his mouth open too. I want to go tell him to close his mouth and to stop crunching on the ice or stop eating at his desk!!! ARRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. I feel your pain, SMM. I share a classroom with a woman who is always smacking her lips when she eats. Luckily, there is a strong possibility that I can handle this for another 7 days. What I really want to do, though, is scream, "Shut Up!!!!! Quit smackin' your lips!" Each day the sound seems more amplified than the day before. Other than that, and her other annoying habit of asking herself questions out loud (which constantly makes me think she's asking me a question), I couldn't think of anyone else I'd rather share a room with.
Another teacher told me that we sound like an old, married couple the way we complain about each other. :)

could you get away with wearing ear plugs, or do you have to answer the phone?

  3. I could get away ear plugs or headphones but after a while my ears ache. I really want to yell at him to stop slurping as well as to let him know that the he is actually damaging his enamel on his teeth with eating the ice. I know this because a dentist informed me of this in detail when I was around 12 and liked to eat ice. He told me it actually cracks the enamel which helps with breaking down the health of the tooth. He showed me all his crowns on his teeth to scare me into stopping. If I were tell this guy, he would just look at me like I was an idiot. Just another small minded person.

  4. Could you listen to an MP3 player? The newer ones are so tiny and the ear pieces are so discreet that no one would probably even notice! :)

  5. I just need to focus more on my work and try to ignore him. I just turned on my media player to play some jazz. Thanks FH for the tips thought.

  6. SMM, that's asking way more of yourself than is possible. I use earplugs. At the end of the day at the clinic we are all buried in paperwork, and some people can talk and write and some people can't. I can't. If it weren't for earplugs, I'd lose my mind. I'm also the only one who is hourly...the rest are salaried. They can take all the time they want to talk and write. If I take too long, I get in trouble. They all have offices, but they come in the break room to talk and do their charts, which is the only workspace I have. Sometimes it makes me want to scream. I finally bought the big $9.99 jar of earplugs and I leave it on the breakroom table. Sort of a "centerpiece." When people talk at me while I'm charting, I just look at them with a "what?" look on my face. It works.

  7. I have a coworker that belches constantly and if you complain she says that if she doesnt do it she will explode, I guess her mom never taught her that you dont have to belch everytime you need to burp, she also likes to whistle and hummm. It drives me crazy.

  8. Here is an interesting article about dealing effectively with obnoxious co-workers: http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=87652&page=2

I work with a guy who drums on the table. He also does 'sound effects' as he walks, he talks to himself, and -answers-. He vocalizes guitar parts in Metallica stuff he plays in his cubicle too. I can't STAND it some days, I find it incredibly distracting, and his work quality suffers. But I'm not his supervisor anymore so I can't do much of anything.

    He's 52 but acts like 15.
