My experience with adding raw food to my pets' diet

  1. A few weeks ago, there was a discussion here about the raw diet. After reading about how one person had seen some big improvements in the cats that she was feeding raw chicken to, I did some research and decided to try adding raw food to my pets' diet.

You see, Mamma Kitty was going downhill fast. She was looking frail, had lost a lot of her energy, and just wasn't her bratty self anymore. There was a patch on her side that was raw and torn up. We tried everything we could to keep her from constantly picking at it, but nothing we did helped. She was also getting another patch where she had started pulling out the fur and constantly picking at it. At that point, my roommate wanted to take her to the vet, and I did too but there was no money for a vet.

So I figured we had nothing to lose by trying a raw diet. After reading several arguments on whether supplements needed to be added to the raw food, and checking my finances, I decided just to add raw chicken, fish, and beef to their diet of canned and dry food.

Mamma Kitty went nuts over chicken, chicken livers, chicken hearts, and beef. She will not go near fish unless it is canned tuna.

Trinity took a little convincing, but now she goes insane over chicken bones (legs and wings), chicken, beef bones, and whatever else we find to give her. She also loves fish - which the cats hate.

Shiva will not eat any raw meat, but now prefers canned food to dry.

Lynx loves chicken and beef but will not eat fish or canned cat food. I don't know what his other family feeds him - if they feed him at all. They mostly groom him and take care of any injuries he has.

The animals get raw food for dinner, with dry food left out for the cats. Shiva eats canned food for breakfast and dinner. Mamma Kitty eats chicken for dinner and whenever it is offered to her, and has canned food for breakfast. Trinity eats whatever meat we give her at dinnertime and has canned and dry food for breakfast. Lynx gets some chicken or beef at night and has dry food the rest of the time.

Here are the results after just a few weeks of this diet:

Trinity - Has a lot more energy and her appetite has improved a lot. She plays a lot more, and is very active for an 8 year old dog. Her whole countenance has improved over all. Her coat shows little improvement, but that could be because she is mostly an outdoor dog and is in desperate need of a bath (which she will get next weekend).

Mamma Kitty - The difference is incredible! Her sores are gone and her fur is growing back! Her appetite has improved dramatically. Her entire countenance is much brighter. Her eyes are clear and have that 'spark' which had been gone for some time. She is turning into a total brat, is always getting in the way in the kitchen, always comes up for food or attention now, and is basically a whole new cat. She looks a lot sleeker and her fur is incredibly soft.
A couple of days ago, she caught herself a bird for a snack. Now, I do not like my babies killing other animals (except gophers), but if they are going to eat what they kill instead of tormenting it to death then I usually stay out of the way. Normally, if Mamma Kitty gets a bird, she will drop it onto the ground and play with it until she is bored. But this time she killed it instantly and growled loud enough that I heard her growling at me over the music in my headphones when I tried to get to close. She ate the whole bird in less than five minutes.

In short, Mamma Kitty is back to being Mamma Kitty again.

Lynx - Some improvement in energy and attitude. But he does not get as much raw meat as the others do. Still, he is lean and muscular, and seems to have more energy and appetite.

Shiva - no change at all. I guess you could say that Shiva is the 'control' in this group. Her diet is still the same with just a little more canned food added. Her health and energy levels have not changed. She does not eat a lot but is very overweight. I wish like anything I could get her to eat the raw food, but she refuses.

So overall, my animals are much healthier now, and I will continue giving them raw meat as often as I can afford to.

  4. Thanks OW...we've been thinking about trying the raw foods along with the dry. I'm so happy to hear such encouraging news from your kits! Will probably start out with the chicken since we eat so much of that ourselves.

  5. Ae you just buying a chicken and giving it to them, bones and all? I thought cats could choke on chicken bones because they splinter?

Are you buying a bunch of livers and hearts from somewhere?

I am willing to try a raw diet but don't want to hurt them or get them sick. What about salmonella?

  6. chicken bones only splinter if they are cooked, and with raw they aren't cooked. i cut the meat off the bones but still feed the bones and meat together, since else one cat would run off with all the chicken, leaving lots of hungry cats wanting the food!

the only way i have been able to find any liver/heart is just buying whole chickens. for me one 6 pound chicken is only lasting 2 nights though now.

salmonella takes 24 hours to develope, but cats digest raw meat in 12 hours. so really if you keep things clean there is very little risk of cats getting salmonella.

    hope that answers your question!

i've done raw now for a while and mine are doing really good with it. i'm finally not cringing when i hear them chewing on bones, it was like nails on a chalkboard to me.

the one thing i have changed is that now i have adjusted the amount of dry food i give them so it lasts till 8 or so in the morning. dry according to some takes longer to digest than raw, so if dry is ahead in the cats stomach it can block the raw, which can cause salmonella. but since raw digests faster than dry i don't think there is any problem with feeding dry right after raw.

now if i could get stubborn Kami to eat even wet food i'd be happy. Kami is a feral who i took on saturday from the cat shelter i work at, she isn't tamable (been there two months and still isn't differant) and decided that she only wants dry. she couldn't go back to where she was living since if people fed her at all they could and probably would be kicked out of their house. she is in a large dog crate though so that i can at least tell if she is eating. maybe once she gets used to this whole new place she will eat some wet or even raw.

  7. I think it's cooked chicken bones that can cause problems. Not sure of that fact, but I seem to remember that cooking makes the bones splinter.

OW, the results you've cited are great. I wonder if Mama Kitty is allergic to some of the ingredients in processed cat food. The fur picking is often a symptom of allergies.

Where do you get the raw food? I have one kitty (Cheetah Boy) who is allergic to almost everything. The vet is constantly telling me that he needs to lose weight, but he can't on the allergen diet and lose weight. The raw diet is sounding better and better to me.

  8. I get the food at the supermarket. I usually either buy a whole chicken or a cut up chicken. I was buying livers and hearts but Mamma Kitty won't eat the livers and hearts anymore. When I have livers and hearts, I usually give them to Trinity.

The cats refuse to eat the bones, so I give the bones to Trinity. That is one reason I still give Mamma dry and canned food along with the chicken and beef - to make sure she gets all of the nutrients she needs since she only eats the meat and skin from the chicken. I am hoping she will continue to hunt and start supplementing her diet with the plentiful mice and gophers we have out in our yard.
