  1. Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forum and I need you help!! I just picked up my new kitten on Friday and ever since he freaks out when he's left on his own and meows constantly.

The worst time is at night because my partner doesnt want him sleeping in the room with us he just screams and screams. Does anyone have any ideas for us that would help? I feel so sorry for him.

    Thanks
    Jodie

  2. try putting a clock next to him the ticking reminds them of their mothers heart beat..sounds like he is lonely!

  3. BKL very good advice you might also put one of your dirty shirts in a kitty bed. Your scent will help calm kitty down

  4. Is there a particular reason your partner doesn't want the cat in the bedroom? Is it because of the meowing? I had the same problem when I first got my cat, and what solved it was letting him come in the bedroom with us. When we first got him, he was rampaging around the room, jumping on the furniture and driving us nuts, but he was just getting used to his new surroundings. We shut him out of the bedroom because we couldn't sleep, but then he just howled all night. He hated being shut out and just wanted to be where we were, so eventually we let him back in. Now he usually plays with us for a few minutes and then curls up and goes to sleep on the end of the bed.

  5. try letting him sleep in the same room but with the door open if you usually have the door closed. when i got binx he would play all over my bed and id have to eventually play with him bc hed just keep on. then hed just pass out either next to me or at the end of the bed. def try a dirty tshirt or a ticking clock.

  7. Thanks everyone for the ideas, I will definitely give them a go!! I’ve already tried getting a cuddly toy to try and make him more at ease but he completely ignored that.

My partner doesn’t want Ollie in the room with us, one for the meowing and seconding he’s worried about him trashing the room as we have a leather bed frame so slightly nervous about his ruining it. Does anyone have any ideas then to stop him from climbing curtains and ruining furniture whilst we are asleep :o)?

  8. Jodie - Welcome to TDK... If you control that behavior during the day, say with a squirt bottle or noise maker, it will probably carry over to the night time. You need to get him a scratching post if you have not already - that will help the curtains and furniture too... I have both a vertical one (sisal rope covered) and a horizontal one of cardboard for my gang of four, and they use them constantly... You might also try playing alot with him near your bedtime - wear him out with a cat dancer/fishing pole toy, for example. He may still want a heating pad/warm source in his bed... put the snuggie in there too, and it may give him a cozy nest feeling. Good luck!

  9. You can try Soft Paws they are great nail caps to keep your cat from doing damage around the house. We found great deals on them at http://purfectcatsupply.com

  10. Good news everyone, Ollie has now settled down and sleeps the whole way through the night. My boyf cracked and he now sleeps in with us and he sleeps all curled up on the bed and only wakes up when I get up to get his breakfast :) yay, he's a much much happier kitten. .I'm so pleased!

I'm going to try those soft claws as well if they are not cruel. Does anyone else have any good experiences with these?

  11. Yay! See, that didn't take long. I'm so glad to hear this. Having a sleeping kitty nearby is nice, isn't it?

I've never tried Soft Paws (my husband & I trim our cat's claws every couple of weeks) but I know there are regulars here who use them. I'm sure you'll get feedback once people start checking in for the day.

    Good boy, Ollie!

  12. :) very pleased indeed, he's so cute all curled up at the end of the bed. Ollie occassionally wakes me up playing with my feet. .hehe!

I clipped his claws the other day and that has worked well, I've just had the soft paws delivered but the kitten ones are still way too big for him so will have to wait a while me thinks :)

I'll have to upload some pics soon so you can all see.
