flea help

  1. Fleas are a big problem here. They are everywhere! Even the brand new baby has them. We have used flea powders for both cats and carpet. The cats are indoor/outdoor so I know will be able to get rid of all of them. Can't afford flea products (like revolution) at the vet. Anyone know of anything else to try and tame the fleas?

  2. try diachotomus earth - i think someone else here knows how to use it and what kind.

do not give kittens flea medicene especially if they are young (like under 6 weeks) because it can kill them.

another thought is to use advantage dog flea medicene, it kills the fleas and is cheaper. you have to know each cats wieght though to do that. it is just one drop per pound of body wieght. do not do anymore than that because it could be harmful.

  3. To quote Anncetera, our expert on cat and kitten health problems: "Food grade diatomaceous earth, applied liberally to cat, upholstered furniture, carpeting, etc. (Vacuum up after a week or two.)" I think she said you can get large bags quite cheaply over the internet. Make sure it's food grade, not swimming pool grade. Good luck!

Just found the websites Ann recommended: another quote from her:

"You need to get a couple pounds of diatomaceous earth (food grade). You work this into the kitten's fur, but you also put in on carpeting, upholstered furniture, a bed mattress... everywhere. The trick is to not vacuum for a week or so. It looks a lot like flour.

    More info at:

    http://www.internet-grocer.net/diatome.htm

    http://www.dirtworks.net/Diatomaceous-Earth.html

This product is non-toxic and works mechanically. If you have any problems with roaches, ants, etc. it should take care of them, too. Put extra near your baseboards and you may not have any insect infestation problems for a long, long time to come."

  4. I bought this last year, but by the time it got here I had bombed the house and bought Revolution for the cats. I have used the diatomaceous earth on my plants to kill pests, and it worked great! I'll be putting this around the edges of the floor to kill roaches, which are unbelievable here in Georgia...they FLY. *shudder*

  5. I bought mine from Dirtworks.

  6. Oooh, yuck, CW, flying roaches! Eeeek!

Sadly I don't think we can get diatomaceous earth here in NZ but I stand to be corrected... :)

  7. And these are not tiny roaches - they are called palmetto bugs here in LA, and can be 1-2 inches long! The cats will paly with them sometimes, but never quite KILL them! My daughter hates them and goes for the fly swatter and half a roll of paper towels to pick up the carcasses when she has killed them... I may have to order some of this stuff too!

  8. Nawlins Catmom is right...these are BIG bugs, they buzz loudly and will fly right into your hair! My cats do catch and eat them if they are on the floor. One was on the wall behind my bed yesterday and I thought I would have a stroke. It suddenly flew right at me, I batted it with a magazine I was holding and hit it straight to Tibby, who quickly caught it and ate it! If only I had that on tape!

  9. THe southerners here call them palmetto bugs as well. It is a COCKROACH! THey are too polite to say it down here, but I'm from NJ so I call it as I see it!

  11. LOL! ..... you guys have no idea!... in Fla... those are are our "household" pets!.... Abby catches them on a regular basis, and of course, brings them thru the "cat door" all the way upstairs to me in my bedroom!..... why there's nothing like a "huge palmetto bug" at 3am!...... LOL... gives Hubbs a good jump start anyway!.... LOL

  12. which one of th three types listed on the dirtworks page is the one to get?

  13. Hi, PK, since Ann recommended food-grade, I would go with the first purest form, fossil shell flour, that says it can be added to food. Probably the next grade would be okay too but you don't want to add extra chemicals like pyrethrin if you don't have to, especially around pets :)

  14. Yup, food-grade diatomaceous earth is the way to go! Strongly recommended and completely safe to use on pets, food, carpeting, upholstered furniture (including mattresses), yard, etc. Do be careful not to stir it up more than needed, since inhaling clouds of dust isn't good, even if the dust is non-toxic.

  15. JCat, you can order DE from the following supplier; be sure to click on "Outside US Orders Only" when you order it. (Shipping will be more expensive.)

  16. Ann, yay, thanks for that. Like I said above, I don't think we have it in NZ so all I know about it is what I've read from you!

Ooh, thanks for the website. That may come in useful one day (though I will check with Customs before I order any -- just to make sure they would let it in...)

  17. No problem! Glad to be of help. Can't think why Customs wouldn't allow it in; the supplier should be able to provide any MDF information needed, and may have some experience working with NZ Customs processes.

  18. I just thought they might not because I've never heard of it here, although of course we could import it under a different name :)
