natural constipation remedies

  1. Please can someone advise me on a natural remedy for feline constipation. I've tried cod liver oil but no improvement - I will keep trying with it though. Since being diagnosed with asthma and starting her meds, miso is only pooping every 3 days. She seems sluggish in herself, but I'm putting that down to the mucous in her lungs too - exercise is distressing for her breathing. Also, I just took in a tiny tortie kitten (5 weeks old) and of course this is stressing her a lot - it's only been 24 hours but she is hissing, spitting and clawing at us as well as generally, which is horrible, as she has always been the most loving and affectionate little cat. Poor little mite - everything is going wrong for her, although of course asthma is a much better diagnosis than the originally feared tumor the vet thought he saw on the x-ray. Oh, and the vet who prescribed miso's steroids, anti-inflammatories and anti-parasite says that these meds do not cause constipation. I did change her litter too, because I think it might have been a trigger for the respiratory issues, but she is peeing in the tray, and pooping every 3rd day, so I don't think she minds the new stuff.

  4. Thank you - I tried the feline inhaler on her for the first time today, as I've been training her in for the past week, but again, this did not go well. She got anxious, despite my treat training with a toilet roll holder etc. So she only got at best half the dose. ah well, I suppose we'll both improve as time goes on. The inhaler will cut out the need for oral drugs, which will help a lot.

  5. Eleniki, when Brutus was having trouble, I gave him a dropper full (about 1 tsp) of Olive Oil twice a day. He has a habit of eating carpet and therefore gets backed up sometimes and the olive oil helps him to soften up and go.

  6. Thanks Angel - I have cod liver oil, which is what the vet suggested, but have only given it to her twice now. How long before Brutus improved?

  7. I've seen others recommend pureed cooked pumpkin as a natural laxative. I've not had to deal with this issue with my kits so I'm not sure what amount is best. Click on the "constipation" tag at the top of this thread to see if there is more information that might help.

    Good luck!

  8. I had to do it for about a week before he really started going. And I have to do it for a week about every other month because the silly kitty won't stop eating the carpet that is making him sick. My next house is going to have all tile or wood floors.

  9. KW, Pumpkin is also a good choice for a natural laxative.... just make sure there isn't anything else in it like sugar or spices etc... and about a 1/2 tsp is all you need per day.

  10. Thanks KW and Angel - I will now click on the constipation tag. I feed miso Applaws wet food, which is very pure, with a high meat/fish content. The chicken with pumpkin is excellent fibre and I make sure to alternate the pumpkin option with plain chicken or fish, so she's getting plenty of good roughage. But, still she has only gone twice in the past 8 days. Is it possible that the Applaws is so low on 'bulk' cereal that she now doesn't need to go every day, like she used to? Still, every 3 days is very little, and she eats very well!
