  1. Just need some advice---I was mentioning to a friend (who is a kitty lover) that I am about to go on a furniture shopping spree and one of the items includes a swivel recliner. Her first response was, "Oh my gosh! You might want to reconsider getting one because you have to be so careful with your cats because they can be killed if they crawl under there!" She then went on about how they have a system in their home that no one puts the recliner down w/out someone else checking first to make sure that no cat is under there. So, now I'm paranoid and wondering if any of you have had this problem with your cats? Geez, I've finally figured out everything I want to get (and where to get it) and now I don't know if I should. :(

  2. OH MY YES! I have 2 of these chairs and the rule is all must be accounted for before putting them up or down. When I first got Sheba at 3 years old, she hid for days inside the recliner. My husband's keys fell out of his pocket into the chair without his realizing it. After his getting up i found the keys--the car key was bent in half! I said to him "What do you think the chair would do to a cats bones?" These chairs come with a big responsibility. Same thing with the reclining sofas.

  3. Yes! My parents always had a rule to that we did a "check" under the recliner to check for our indoor cat before putting it down. She liked to crawl under it when someone was in it! PLEASE BE CAREFUL!!!

  4. Hmmmmm. . .maybe I should get the chair and ottoman instead? :(
I'm glad I asked because it never even occurred to me that it could be a hazard to the kitties. I seriously doubt Bosley could even fit into it (he'd probably try and get all 25 lbs. stuck!), but Bailey LOVES to get inside of boxes and other things.

  6. My favorite chair is my recliner. The boys have never had any interest in getting underneath it. I don't have a problem with a recliner at all. I guess that when they were babies they had better things to do ! Or perhaps they are not curious enough to care. As I have said before they are really laid back kitties. I also have a chair and ottoman. The boys' most favorite place in the world is sleeping on the ottoman. I finally put a cozy fleece on it so I would not have to constantly clean cat hair off of it. They love it. They also like to sleep on the back of it. It must be because it is filled with down. Best of luck in your choice. I would choose which ever you like just be careful and keep a watchful eye out! Hugs!

  7. We used to have recliners, and we used to have to be very careful, too. There were several times when humans got "stuck" in the chairs because cats were sleeping in the place where the "works" would go when the footrest was lowered.

  8. Thank you, FH!! We just bought a new couch with recliners at the ends. I never even thought about kits going in there... (Yeah, I am not too bright sometimes)... Now I have to develop a process for recliner usage... I wonder what version of the ISO standard that falls into?LOL

  9. I never thought of this either. We have an old recliner ($10 at at thrift store), but the only interest any of my cats have ever showed in in is either to lay on top of the back or to use it as a scratching post (better this than the couch)!

  10. Some recliners have barriers to keep kits and kids out of the danger zones, my cats prefer the back of the recliner, or the extended legrest, whether I am in it or not! Since one of my legs is weak right now, I can't push hard enuf to close it while sitting in it, so I do check before shutting it down from the front, but I am the only one to use the chair, so I am the only one that has to rememeber!

  11. Mine have all been raised around a recliner. Just taught them when they were young not to get under it. Water in a squirt bottle was all it took. They like to sit with me when i'm in it but never bother to go under it.
