Royal Canin canned S/O and Hill's dry c/d

(12 posts)
  1. Hi my feline friends! First - let me start by saying I do respect many of your opinions on how bad this food might be...however, I cannot take any chances anymore and must trust my vet with my boy's urinary issues. I tried the Wellness canned - and the Wellness Core...he started blocking so back to the vet we went at a great expense...

Vet said Urinary S/O then switch to Hill's C/D multicare. Here's my problem! He loves the S/O canned and dry! He HATES the c/d canned. Can I feed him the canned S/O plus the Hill's c/d dry? I know I should ask the vet - but just wondering if anyone else had this issue?

    Thanks!

  2. I am a vet assistant, we sell both foods at the clinic i work at. We have urinary cats on both longterm, the purpose of the food is to change the urine PH so crystals can't form and block the urethra. I think you should be able to feed either or both foods as long as your kitty isnt blocking up.

    Good luck!

  3. Mary, Wilbur is a serious "kidney kitty". He gets a free choice, all day of dry Hill's d/d and Royal Canin Renal L/P. In the evening he gets wet Renal L/P or wet Hill's c/d. He does not really like the wet but will pick at it a bit. He does like the "sauce" on the Renal L/P and will lick all of that. After his surgery he was down to 9 lbs. That was last August he is now at 12.5 or 13 lbs. I guess that he likes it. I use a water fountain. The boys love it and are drinking more than enough. As for me, I have had such wonderful care for him at the vet school that I follow their instructions. Wilbur takes 1/4 tablet of fomodine 2X a day and 1/2 tablet of potassium citrate 2X a day. So far he is doing very well. I thought I would lose him in August. It was touch and go for a really long time. The vets said he should have been gone 4-5 times during his hospitalization. 13 days in ICU!! He will never be "well" but doing great. I am blessed everyday he is with me!

  5. My Max had UT problems, and as soon as I got him on the Hill's c/d he had no more problems. He had been raised on the Science Diet dry food, so he had no problem switching. Different things work for different kitty problems, but I was lucky to find just what Maxie needs. And I know how expensive those vet trips are!!! Good luck with your kitty.

  6. What an uncanny coincidence! Just tonight I started Wolfie on Hill's c/d. He actually ate the dry food and he is normally quite picky! I have a prescription for the wet and will pick some up tomorrow.

  7. Hey Puddytat! Your boys are adorable! My avatar is also my kitty "Alex".
Thanks for all of the advice everyone! I do feel safe giving him the wet RC SO and the dry Hills c/d... it is what he likes! He hates the canned c/d....

I actually compared all of the ingredients with both companies and they are very similar so I'm hoping there won't be any issues!

Catwoman - is your's on C/D for crystal issues? Poor kitty! Hope he's ok!

  8. Mary--yes, it has been an ongoing problem. Wolfie is on Elavil for inflammation and chondroiton to help rebuild a healthy bladder wall. I keep a bag of fluids in the house and if it looks like it is starting, I administer subQ. We had another emergency visit last weekend to the tune of $233, and the emergency vet said that possibly the only missing link in his treatment plan is the prescription food so these crystals stop forming. My regular vet thinks that Wolfie has Inflammatory Bladder Diease and the emergency vet thinks the crystals are causing the inflammation and thickened bladder wall, and infection. I hope this works because I am at my wit's end.

  9. Oh wow - - I know exactly how you feel, Catwoman! I wish we could just know for sure what causes this issue! I find myself obsessive about watching him go to the litter box anymore! In fact last night I was so worried because he usually pees when I get up in the morning and right before I go to bed at night. Well he did pee in the AM...but nothing until about midnight...ugh...of course I can't sleep until he pees! Then of course this morning I guess his schedule was off, so he did not pee when I got up...I'm praying he did something while I was here at work! Geez!!! Is it hard to administer the SubQ? My boy definitely does not drink a lot of water unless it's mixed in with his food..

I even went to the extent to buy the "smartbox" litter box so I could catch his urine to be tested to see if the crystals were disappearing..but he will not go near it..he wants his "fresh step" letter!

The perils of owning a male kitty! But I love him to pieces!

  10. Catwoman--how old is Wolfie? Just curious because Max is 10 years old and he just started with this problem last year. I'm so glad my vet has gotten this under control. He's the first male I've had. My Kirby was a female calico, and then Molly, of course. Now I have little Cali (she's only 2). Good luck to both of you, CW and Mary, with the C/D--I sure hope it works.

  11. Mary, can you mash the two wet foods together? We not only mash the bejeezes out of the wet food, but we add a equal amount of warmish water to it. The resulting mess smells and looks awful, but the boys love it.

  12. Bumping this up since I missed a reply here...Wolfie is 3 and this has been a recurring problem since he was about 1. My vet has stopped selling the C/D and Wolfie will now be on Royal Canin dry. I know his bladder is working fine at the moment, since he sprayed the wall of my office this morning. *sigh*
