One Kitten or Two

  1. Hey everyone,

I'm in need of some more advice. In your opinion is it better to have one kitten or two? I'm pretty sure the amount of work is fairly the same. The only thing would be the vet bills but I'm adopting kittens from an organization that covers the spaying/neutering surgery plus first vaccinations, deworming etc. The price is pretty close together especially if I find a vet that can do the vaccinations for not a huge amount of money. Anyway please let me know your opinions!

  2. I highly recommend two littermates. They already know each other so there transition into your home will be easier for them. They will keep each other company. That is what I did when I got my first two cats. Digit and Furl are sisters. We had no other critters in the house and they had a very easy transition into our home.

I can't wait to see pictures of your new kitty or kitties! :)

  3. What if I got 2 kittens but they weren't littermates? Would that be ok too? Or would that be the same as introducing a new kitten to an existing one?

  4. I reccommend 2 as well Jennify! My Max though he is intrigued and interested in his new baby sister and has stopped growling he is still having a hard slow adjustment! Save yourself the heartache watching your baby mope and seem not so secure by starting off by getting 2! They really do need a feline companion to spend time with and snuggle and nap with when you are not home!

  5. Sorta depends! If they are being foster at the same place and have been allowed to interact then it should be fine otherwise yes there will be a transition period for the babies though kittens tend to transition and accept much quicker then adults do! So as long as they are roughly the same age and are introduced early on you should be fine!

  6. How long would this transition period be?

  7. I have two girls from the same litter looking for a great home if your are anywhere even close to Texas and interested. The one is already eating out of the bowl and were beginning litter training today (Sunday). They get a long great and are both very sweet and super smart.

  9. When Oliver showed up at our home, Sammy and he were kept separate for about 5 days. They had interaction through a sliding glass door. We would let them together for short monitored times about 3-4 times a day. Then the big day. It went very well. Sammy was 1 1/2 years old when Oliver joined us. Oliver was about 7 mos old. I think younger kittens would adjust faster.

  10. GO FOR 2!!!!! I have done singles and doubles, two definitely is better. It gives them a buddy and playmate. Also, I am such a softie, I don't want them to be alone while I am at work! The work is really about the same, especially when they get a little older! Good luck!

  12. Two kittens is better. They will keep each other company. Baring any inherited disease, they will probably live longer because they will be happier.

Kittens are very adaptable so even if they don't come from the same litter, they should be fine together after a day of watching them. It's harder to introduce a new cat (or kitten) to a resident cat who thinks of your house as his/her territory.

Two kittens coming into the house at the same time are both going to be in new territory to them, so they should conquer it together.

  13. Definintely two. I have always collected kitties in pairs and vets give discounts if you take two in for vaccinations etc.

  14. Definitely 2! I got Nathaniel when he was 5 weeks old, and then got Sophie later when they were both 4 months old, and it only took about 3 hours before they were comfortable enough to be in the same room without growling, and then about 48 hours before they were romping through the apartment like they'd known each other all their lives.

  15. 2 kittens are 3 times the fun !!!

  16. I have done two pairs and two singles, and definitely go for the pair... I don't think it really matters if they are the dame litter as loong as they are close in age - some shelters will mingle litters after they are weaned anyway... My vet gives discounts for paired visits too.

  17. 2, 2, 2!!!! Always twice the fun. They can keep each other company and out of some of the mischief. They will play with each other and not get in to so much trouble. You are going to have so much fun. Kitties are the best.

  18. I definitely would have gotten two if it had been up to me but my mom ended up saying no, that we would only get one. :( o well it's still a kitten. I'll post pictures as soon as I get her, although it won't be until later in the week.

  20. Are you sure you are going to be a girl kitty? Boy kitties are great also! :D

  21. Ya I'm sure it will be a girl kitten....it's not that I have anything against male kittens but the one we chose is a female and so gosh darn cute! I'm getting her on Thursday as long as everything goes ok.

  22. So....I still may get 2 kittens....my mom has opened her mind to it again. I just need to basically talk her into it more. Any ideas?

  23. Two kittens will play with each other and keep each other happy. That means less crying while they are young. It also means that they will play with each other when they are older rather than playing with the expensive lamp or someone's leg.

If a cat is bored at home all day while its humans are away, it may behave inappropriately (not using the sandbox, licking little bald patches). Two kitties will keep each other from being bored.

  24. I have two brothers. We deliberately adopted two, so that they would keep each other company while we are at work all day... They were rescued feral kittens, up for adoption at a local pet store... when we said we wanted two... the other family looking at the babies took two also.... which was pretty cool. They are a riot...you will never need TV again!
