What have I gotten myself into?

  1. Tonight, I've rescued a black dsh kitty and three of her kittens (also all black dsh). They were learning to play under parked cars on a way-too-busy residential street. That struck me as being a particularly bad thing for them to learn, and one that would almost certainly shorten their lives.

Kittens appear to be 10-12 weeks old, and not too scared of people. Mama alternates between being affectionate and being hissy. I think food is making her calmer, though.

Back to check the trap; I think she had a tabby kitten, too, so I set and baited the humane trap. If I see no kitten tonight, I'll check again first thing in the morning.

    Wish me luck!

  4. Nobody's in the trap tonight; I'll be checking first thing in the morning, sometime between 5 and 6 am, and then again at 8 am. If nobody's there at 8 am, I'll pick the trap up and come back with it at dusk.

Tomorrow morning will be full of phone calls, trying to get mama & babies in for spay/neuter and shots. If I can't get her in right away, I'll consider releasing mama back outside so she can take care of her tabby youngster. At his or her tender age, being left alone for much more than a day or so can be a death sentence. I can start working on regular feeding in the trap to try and recapture her & baby for TNR services, if nothing else.

  8. Hoping little tabby took the bait. You really are a kitty saviour, Ann!

  9. No tabby kitten in the trap at 5:45. I re-set the trap, and will be checking again at 7:30 am. If no kitten then, I'll be picking the trap up altogether. It's located in an apartment complex, and while it's mostly hidden, I'm fairly sure there are kids who would not be kind to a trapped kitten crying for its mama.

Still working to find out if mama can be spayed today... the kittens are younger than I initially thought, more like 8-10 weeks old. Too lightweight for SNKC alteration, but possibly not too young for Wayside Waifs to adopt out. Lots of phone calls to be made this morning!

  10. Good luck with those calls, Ann, and I hope little tabby turns up. Please keep us posted. I wonder where they came from -- if Mum is alternately hissy and affectionate, do you think she was once somebody's pet?

Posted 2 years ago by jcat #

  11. Mama was no longer hissy once in the one-room environment at home. She appears to have figured out it's a safe room, with food, water, and litter, several places to hide and sleep, and a comfortable spot or two to nurse her litter. They appear to still be nursing for comfort, since she doesn't appear to be producing milk at all (way too skinny for that).

She's definitely not feral, though I also don't know if she used to be a pet. If so, then nobody got her fixed by the time she was 5-6 months old, she is either outdoor-only or indoor-outdoor. So she got in the family way, and now she has a passel of youngsters - with nobody taking care of her.

There's dumpster-diving and hunting opportunities, though, and I imagine that's how she's probably been getting by.

  14. Looking forward to hearing the outcome of this. I really hope you can get that little tabby. Good for you for taking them in. I've never just come across kittens like that. Seems like quite a few on this site have. I secretely wish I did so I could take them in.

  15. AC, you are an angel! Tabby kitten needs to come in tho', poor thing. Glad mama has settled down...it is exactly how my Hester behaved when I brought her inside. Good luck with all of them!

  16. Keep us posted Ann, I hope you can find the missing baby. If mama isn't frantic about him, I have to wonder if something happend to him before you caught mama and the siblings. Best of luck on getting the mama and babies adopted out to good homes.

  17. Ann she is in the best hand--the hands of an angel of cats. I hope that you are able to get the tabby. I know you will feel great when they are all safe and sound. Thank you Ann for taking care of those that seem to be forgotten.

  18. No tabby kitten to be found this morning, and TORRENTIAL rains during the day. Not a good situation for one small tabby kitten's survival, especially if he does something unwise like seeking shelter in a storm drain. But I've put out food again for him, and upped the ante by adding four Greenies treats.

Mama kitty will be spayed, get her shots & eartip tomorrow. I'm hoping to place her back outdoors early the following morning, in the same location as I found her. If the tabby kitten has survived until then, and not gone far, I'm hoping she'll be able to find him (or her) and continue parenting until the kitten's grown up.

The three black kittens are doing well. I think I got them right before they got to the stage of learning to be fearful of people. They're okay with being picked up and handled now, but only the biggest one (a fluffy male) has shown signs of being cuddly. That may change once their mama leaves.

I have to go shortly... Glenn is taking me out to dinner for my birthday. See ya later!

  19. Mama kitty leaves in about an hour for her "spa" appointment. She's fasted since 10 pm, which means she and her kittens have been restless since about 3 am. She'll be having spay surgery, 5-in-1 shot, rabies, and eartipping. I'll be treating her at home to a diatomaceous earth rubdown, most likely while she's still pretty out of it.

I hope she pulls through surgery okay. She's skinny, but otherwise appears pretty healthy (though very young and small to have kittens).

  20. Ann, you are truly a "kitty angel"..... bless you for rescuing those babies and Mama!..... prayers for the little Tabby!

  21. I will have to see if I can get some photos taken and posted.

  22. Ann, was it your birthday yesterday? HAPPY BIRTHDAY, if so! How like you to spend it rescuing cats!

    And does that mean you've spent a year with Glenn? I remember you two got together after he asked you what you'd like for your birthday last year and you asked for -- of course -- help with getting one of your cats a vet's appointment... {{{Birthday hugs}}}

Posted 2 years ago by jcat #

  23. Yes, it was my birthday yesterday. One more year gone by; quite an eventful one, at that. Last night, I told Glenn that if I'd been talking with a friend a year ago, and they told me this wonderful guy was going to come into my life, I'd have called them crazy.

Six months is coming up... on June 20th. Glenn's birthday is June 15th. And yesterday he finally got the last of his belongings out of the storage unit. We have LOTS of reasons to celebrate!

  24. Have to run now... get to the spay/neuter clinic! Will be back on later today.

  25. I'm so pleased, Ann, just goes to show, sometimes karma works just like it's supposed to!

Posted 2 years ago by jcat #

  26. I wouldn't call it karma... I'd call it sheer, blind, dumb luck. But I'll take it, whatever it's called!

Mama kitty went quietly to the clinic... not a peep, but also not terrified. More along the lines of, "Okay... so this is different... now what?" She'll be getting spayed, eartipped, and rabies and FVRCP shots. Lucky girl! Even if she spends the rest of her life on the streets, she'll have some factors working in her favor toward a longer, healthier life.
