  1. My daughter got a kitten from our neighbor that is solid white his name is Cloud Thunder I think he may be deaf. He loves to play but he only wakes up when we pick him up. I asked my mother about him being deaf and she said that since he can meow and purr he is not but it is so fustrating that he dosn't come when called or act like he can hear us walking in to his room. Anything will be helpful. Also, I am in a search for a long hair black and white female kitten like I had as a child, any one out there know where I can find her?

  2. Every hearing impaired kitty I've ever run across has been solid white with either blue eyes, or two eyes of different colors.

  3. I had a solid white cat with blue eyes who was totally deaf. It is possible that her kitten is deaf, but that is no reason he can't have a wonderful life with you. Just always remember to approach him from the front if at all possible. And you can save him some anxiety by walking with "heavy feet" (but not TOO heavy to scare him) or tap your hand if he is sleeping. They get used to feeling the vibration and learn to accept that as you "communicating" with them. Not sure where you are but if you go to the main page there are kittens (one like you described) in Chicago looking for a home! Welcome!

  6. LL,

Lots of white cats have hearing impairments. There is a lot of information on this to be found on the web.

Here are a couple of sites to check out.

    http://www.messybeast.com/whitecat.htm

    look under

    WHITE CATS AND DEAFNESS

    about 1/3 down the page.

    Here is some more stuff

  7. Solid white cats are frequently deaf. I'd definitely just get it double checked by the vet, but chances are that the kitty is deaf. This is okay; they can still live a perfectly normal, happy life and be completely bonded with you the same as a hearing kitty can.

  8. As for the search for a black and white - check out petfinder.com. You can also check your local shelter - it is kitten season! They will probably have lots of choices... Good luck, and come back and chat!

  9. Even if a cat isn't deaf remember that cats aren't like most dogs--they do not come when called. You can have a great relationship with your beautiful baby no matter what! I agree with NC and look on petfinder. There are so many there and you can look in the areas closest to you. Also you can look for cats to adopt on Caster. I bet you will find the baby of your dreams--or you might be choosen by a cat unexpectantly!

  10. Does one teach a deaf animal sign language to get the animal to know his or her name or to teach him or her commands?

  11. About the white cat. Your right. It may be deaf. I learned from a show called animal witness that over half of the cats that are solid white and have blue eyes are deaf. It is something about the gene of solid white cats that have blue eyes that causes them to be deaf from birth.

  12. My sister had a deaf dog who responded to various hand signals. Of course, a dog tends to respond to humans all the time and a cat only does when he/she is in the mood.

Still, I bet you could teach little Cloud to respond to certain signals or taps on the floor if a treat was at the other end of the signal.

I may be mistaken, but I thought some one on TDK had a tuxie kitten who needed a home. Anyone?

  13. I remember Ken having several kittens he needs to find good homes for. He lives in Texas as does Laura-Leigh. I'll try to find that thread.

    Here it is: http://www.dailykitten.com/chat/topic/17711

Ken's e-mail is in his first post.

  14. Laura-Leigh, there is another TDK member from Texas, who goes by Ken on the list, who has some kittens he is trying to find a home for. Check out this TDK thread http://www.dailykitten.com/chat/topic/17711?replies=27#post-395594

Why don't you try posting your email in the form of
    name at provider dot ending

That way internet "spiders" looking for your email won't pick up on it but Ken can and perhaps you two can see if you are close enough to look at his kittens. Just a hopeful thought.

  15. bump for Laura-Leigh's notice

Laura-Leigh, Ken posted his email address in his first post on the other thread. It is (and I'm quoting it directly from HIS posting):
    karmer@bleacherreport.com

His profile shows he is in Texas just as you are. Why not email him and see if perhaps one of the kittens he needs to find homes for is one you might want???

  17. Deaf cats will purr and meow. They can live normal lives, as can blind cats. But just because he doesn't come when called just proves he's a typical cat! Remeber, "Dogs have masters, cats have servants!"

  18. REPORTED TO KITTEN MASTER

Folks, appears to be more spamming. The posters of the last three messages prior to mine here have been "members" for only a few minutes before the posts made by them.

DO NOT CLICK ON THE EMBEDDED LINKS WITHIN THEIR MESSAGES. I'm sure those links are spam trouble!!!

  19. Even if the kitten's deaf, its not a big deal. They can pick up on floor vibrations so they will know when you are coming (if they are not sleeping). The main thing is that the cat should never be allowed outside because deaf cats can't hear cars coming. Also, you may want to affix a bell on him if you have a big place so you can find h

Cats aren't highly trainable anyway. They don't always come when called (especially if there is no food) and I've never been able to teach any of my cats tricks or other commands. They are just great companions.

  20. My 13 years "old white cat" was born deaf. I have to confess I needed to study a good deal on deaf cats. Training her wasn't as simple as the majority of people write. Blanca; (her name) never, sensed real danger on window sills, she lost his balance 3 times. I ended up putting basic safety chains on all the home windows. I could open up the windows but, she couldn't escape. Blanca has a challenge with leaping on to the furniture, she tries climbing, and half the time gives up.
