I came across this site while googling adopting one eyed cats. I write a blog for the Mason County Animal Shelter in Pt. Pleasant WV USA. They are a county run shelter that used to be no-kill but are now a kill shelter.:( The volunteers are reaching out to rescues to keep the numbers of animals in the shelter below the allowed amount so they do not have to euthanize anyone. This shelter is high intake and in an area were there are not many adoptions. Pit bull adoptions are banned in the county. Back to one eyed cats. Betty is a one eyed cat who is not a kitten. She is about a year old. If anyone would like to look at the blog and see the animal or would like to write a testimonial to a oneyed cat that I could put on the blog, please respond.People may not be adopting Betty because of her one eye. Betty needs to get out of the shelter. If animals are to be euthanized it will be the ones who have been there the longest time. Homer is a kitty who also need out. He is around 6 months old.

Hi, Elizabeth, and welcome! Feel free to edit this as much as you like.
I've never owned a kitty with one eye (or any kitties at all, stupid allergies) but a friend of mine had a wonderful one-eyed cat named, of course, Pirate. He'd found Pirate as a 6-month kitten with a bad eye infection. The vet was able to save one eye but not the other. Pirate didn't let his status upset him one bit because he was too busy playing, catching any bug that dared enter his domain, and purring the moment one of his many devoted fans made eye contact, let alone petted him. The only way that you could tell from his behavior that he had that missing eye was that he sometimes jumped a bit if somebody approached him from that side while he was paying attention to something else. It certainly didn't make him more aggressive (except when he was Vanquishing his toys and sometimes calling to his humans to admire his Mad Skillz) or less friendly to strange humans. We don't know whether he ever even aware of his missing eye, but if he was, he faced the loss with an "oh, well, life's still wonderful fun!" that any human could envy. He died at 16 from a completely unrelated kidney infection. Nobody could tell whether he knew that he was a special little rescue or not, but given the love he lavished on his owner and anybody else who gave him a treat or a petting, I wouldn't doubt it for a minute.

Hello Elizabeth...my heart bursts for the many wonderful, yet unadopted animals out there in the kill-shelters..I wish there was something I could do for them. You sound like a wonderful, hard working, caring person. Those critters are lucky for your love and loyalty..We adopted 4 feral kittens about 6 months ago and along with our 2 elderly dogs we make a great little family. I love each and every one of them more and more each day. God Bless..Good Luck..And Thank You for being YOU!.

Hi Elizabeth and welcome. One of the managers here has a one-eyed cat that she calls Uno. She's an awesome cat and is very loved and cherished. She's still a teenage cat, but she's very sweet and really really smart. Lots of luck finding homes for the kitties, let us know.

Hi Elizabeth. I currently have 2 one-eyed cats. Squint physically has only one eye. His right eye became severly infected as a very young kitten, and ruptured, eventually dissolving. He has severely limited vision in his left eye, but that does not stop him from hunting squirrels, lizards and any other moving object that he sees. I also have his littermate sister - Sis - who lost the sight in her left eye as a kitten too. She has no problem seeing with her remaining eye and thinks everyone sees the same way she does. You can see pictures of my two cats by clicking on my name and viewing their Catster pages. The only limitation I put on my one-eyed cats is that I keep them inside at night (I live in the country on 13 acres). They stay outside all day and have no problems functioning as any 2 eyed cat! They are four years old and are healthy, happy, loving cats!

Welcome Elizabeth. The most perfect cat that ever existed graced our lives for a decade. He and his mom were run over and he was found clinging to her dead body. He lost one eye and was mostly blind in the other. That didn't stop him from swatting flies with deadly accuracy or leaping high into the air into one's arms-invited or not. He even jumped into the pizza delivery guy's arms. So we renamed him Desperado.

Welcome to TDK. My best friend had a one eyed cat called Smokey-Joe (named after a local tramp who was a well-known local character). He lived a happy and healthy life until he finally succumbed to old age at 17.

Just realised the word "tramp" might cause some trans-Atlantic confusion. I think the American word might be hobo?????????
