  1. I got home from my classes, and I notice Taco is laying down on my Trader Joe's shopping bag. I thought he must have been playing with it after knocking it down off of the hook and he got it on the couch and laid down on it. At second look, I noticed it was around his neck. Not only around his neck, but twisted. I think he must have gotten it off the hook, dove into the handle while playing, and then got it twisted by kicking it to try to get it off. Thank god he stopped kicking when he did before he strangled himself or anything serious happened. This is how he looked when I found him.

After I took the bag off he was SO happy and flopped right to sleep. He looks so much bigger when he flops because of all that fur.

Have any of your babies ever done anything scary like that?

  2. How scary, Haje did it once with a plastic bad that he got his head caught in.

  3. TACO!.... thank goodness you cried "Uncle" when you did!..... one time Abby managed to get her paw thru her collar (it was very loose), so when I got home she had sort of a "harness" looking garb!... poor baby, she was sooo miserable... needless to say, it made sure it was the proper fit from now on... "2 fingers room" that's all, according to my vet....

  4. Years ago I took a half day and boy was I glad I did. Shaddo came hopping out with his front "thumb" claw stuck in the bell of his collar. He had been struggling with it and I think if I hadn't been been there to intervene he probably would have ripped the claw off and/or broken his "finger". It was really stuck in there; took a while to get it out and he was so relieved.
Glad you found Taco when you did - that was scary!

  5. How scary, Gini. Yes, my RT tried to commit suicide with some yarn when she was a kitten. It happened so fast that she couldn't even cry out, but she did make a strangling sound. Fortunately I was in the same room and realized what had happened. I thought she was gone, though - she was limp and her eyes were glazed over by the time I cut it off her neck. Very scary! I stopped knitting after that incident.

  6. Oh that poor dear!!!! He was smart enough to lie still! OHHHH, he is SOOOO adorable, I would love to hug him :)))

  7. Our little Abby (now at the Bridge) did that once with a plastic bag and scared herself so bad she took off round and round the room, getting more and more frantic, we couldn't catch her to take it off... one more reason to get rid of plastic bags, think of all the wildlife that must have happened to... Thank goodness poor darling Taco is all right!

  8. I'm glad I'm not the only one. It freaked me out. Now I'm not sure where to keep my bags. I'm not even sure how he got it down and all tangled in the first place but thank goodness he stopped twisting it up when he did. I can't even imagine how he jumped up to the top of the couch with that massive bag around his neck. Poor baby :( I'm sorry about everyone elses scary experiences; the things our babies do!

  9. Taco, leave the shopping to Mummy. You're best at making it disappear. . . into your tummy.
Glad he's ok Gini, but what a fright you must have had. He does look so wonderful stretched out asleep.

  10. Thank goodness he didn't strangle himself!!!

Years ago I had a cat who tried to climb the Christmas tree while I was at work. He ended up tangled in the string of lights and dragged the tree all over my apartment before he escaped. Needless to say, the tree and apartment were a bit worse for wear. Thankfully, the cat was okay. Funny thing, he never messed with any Christmas trees after that!

  11. OMG {{{Taco}}}! Years ago, I awoke to such a strange sound that my heart almost beat through my chest! I'd sit up and listen for this sound, and it would disappear. I'd hear it again, sit up, and then it would stop. This seemed to go on forever! After a few minutes, the culprit was found. Spanky had both of the handles of a plastic shopping bag around his big, fat stomach! Every time he'd walk closer to the bedroom, the crinkling sound would scare him and so he'd stop walking (and I'd lie back down). He, like Taco, acted like I had saved his life when I got him out of that contraption!

  12. My Calli is obsessed with plastic bags. When she hears one she will come running. They are almost like catnip to her. I find this strange because she likes to lick on them before she plays with it. When I first gave her one she got the handle around her head and couldn't get it off. Now I break them apart before I let her have one. If I put them in the trash I do the same thing so I don't worry about a stray kitty getting in the trash and it getting wrapped around their necks and not having help to get it off.

  13. George has almost done that a couple of times with plastic bags; I try to get to them first and cut the handles, because he does love to play with them. Good boy, Taco, for letting mommy save you (he is so gorgeous, Gini).

Speaking of scares, hubby broke our coffee pot the other day, and last night when I went to check George's food bowl, what did I see but crunchies, wet food and BROKEN GLASS! A big piece, right under the wet food! Scared the daylights out of me, but I can't figure out how it got there; like I said, the coffee pot got broken a couple of days ago, and I guarantee I would have seen the glass if it had been there when I put George's food in the dish. Very weird. Needless to say, I dumped out the whole dish of perfectly good food, washed the bowl and refilled it.

  14. My sister's cats loved to play in shopping bags so the re-usable grocery bags are kept folded up with the handles tucked in on a high shelf. I also had a scare with the strings from the window blinds so those are kept tied up above kitty on window sill height. Luckily he just got tangled and I was right there but the thought of that struggle happening while I was at work was scary.

  15. Lol, Taco! You scared your meowmy half to death!
One time I had a necklace dangling off my couch and then my kitten Mickey (rainbow bridge) started pawing at it and the necklace fell on around his neck and he was running around the whole house, panicking, while I was racing after him. That was quite a sight!

  16. Poor Taco. I can't believe he did that. Luckily my babies have never done anything like that... (yet) '_'

  17. Poor Taco. He looked so sad in the second photo. He must have been waiting for you to get it off his neck. Good thing he did not continue to twist the handles.

  18. Awwww, Taco!

Tansey has done something similar a couple of times. Once it was a paper bag with raffia handles, and she got herself stuck in it. Every time she took a step it would rattle, startle her, and she's take another step...faster and faster, to try and get away from the rattle. Pretty soon she was running around and around and around our lower level.

I knew I shouldn't...but I was laughing so hard I had tears in my eyes. I finally grabbed ahold of her and she had wet herself, she was so frightened.

Another time she got herself stuck in a baseball cap one night(this was within the last couple of months). I'm still not quite sure how she did -that-, but she 'wore' it for awhile. I don't know how long, she jumped on the bed, which was unusual, and I realized she had 'an appendage' and carefully extricated her from it.

She was -very- happy and she stayed with me for a short cuddle, purring and kneading my hair in thanks.

  19. {{{Gini}}} You must have been speechless when you realized the possibilities of what Taco could've done. My kitty once got her neck caught in the strings that open/close the blinds. I heard a strange sound and stopped her before anything happenend but I immediately cut the strings and just tied some buttons on the ends to keep them from tangling and forming another "noose". A lot of blinds have two strings leading into one cap. If you have pets (any size!) I think it is a wise precaution to separate these.

  21. Looks like lots of kitties like bags. I think I'll start folding up my reusable bags and placing them up on a shelf where he can't reach to be on the safe side.

Posted 2 years ago by gini #

  22. Holy crow, gini! I also keep my bags handles wrapped around the bag so they aren't obvious and keep them out of reach. Altho Taco is such a clever boy, I'm not sure if those measures are enough!

  23. Oh my, Gini! How scary. Glad you got to Taco in time to help him. Sylvester and Mia both love bags but I only leave out the paper ones for them to run and hide in.
