Molly was originally Bagherra who was originally Zipper! I went thru a baby book looking for the purrfect name for her. Molly stuck and now it is as if that was her destiny. Betty and Wilma were another story. I knew I wanted siblings so I asked my patients and co-workers to give me names for pairs. I had settled on Ben and Jerry because I had wanted boys. Well when the litter came and it was all girls I was stuck. I had a long list of girl pairs and figured I would let them move in and see what stuck. At first Betty worked but Wilma seemed like an old lady's name. Here was this tiny kitten and I was trying to call her Wilma. Eventually I think they got used to the names and thus they were Betty and Wilma. Also had Laverne and Shirley, Thelma and Louise.......

Buttercup and Penny had already been named at the shelters from which I adopted them. Gabriel was named by his first meowmy; I suspect that he got his name because he's a Christmas kitty (Dec. 21 is his purrday).
Other kitties I've had were named by previous owners (like Katie), for their appearances (Tiger Lily was striped; Inky was solid black), or the circumstances of their adoption (Chappel and his littermates had been abandoned in the narthex of the church I was attending at the time).

Our Willow was a teeny, tiny kitten and was stranded in a desert willow tree in our back yard. She had a terribly broken right rear leg and so how she got up in that tree is still a mystery to us.
Windi was found a few months later. A neighbor called us to see if we could catch her. It was a very windy night and we live on a street called Windridge and so..... Windi!

I was going to call Bob Dexter for whatever reason - even had a tag made. I took him home and spent the day with him and somehow I figured he was a Bob instead. As soon as it popped into my head, I knew that was the right name for him.
When Bobby was an only kitty and I left him by himself I would put a movie or the tv on for him. One of his favorites was Milo and Otis. When I got Milo, I figured we had to name him after the kitty in Bobby's favorite movie! :) -
I frankly wouldn't want to travel with a kitty named Dexter......

Chris was named after my boyfriend's youngest daughter, who is (usually) a sweetie. He was real sweet as a kitten, but is turning into a grumpy old man (hence the nickname Grumpy).
Rattlesnake was named for his striped tail. Spook was named for the fact she was real shy when she was younger and could (and would) hide very well -- she's almost entirely black (and my avatar).
Topaz, well, I'm not sure where I got that. Goblin or Trouble are more appropriate names.

My Mom and I play 'spot that car' game with Rav4s (my moms vehicle) boxes (those horrible box like cars) and Nox's (Equinox)We started playing BOX! a long time ago, making fun of them.... We started playing Rav4! When my mom got her car about 2 years ago, anytime you see one on the road, its kinda like slug bug...You call it. Rav4! BLACK! If you mess up and call a car, and it turns out to be a diff car you loose your points....Litterally anywhere we go together we play this game...LOL
Anyways, when I got my Nox last year, started calling Noxs...ECT...
So when we found 3 kittens, we decided to call them Nox, Rav, and Chev...short for Chevolett...couldnt call her Box...or could we have...LOL....Chev was for my dads Chevy pickup...lol

My still small female cat, Dottie is a fun tuxie with white background and black "polka dot" markings...when I found her as a stray she had a litter of 3
dotted kittens and one true tuxie that found new homes! Thirteen years later she is as sweet as ever...and getting adjusted to her new house mate, Crockey, a stray gentle giant male who showed up around Thanksgiving '08! He is a creamsicle with a striped tail...like a Davey Crockett hat! I hope to post pics as soon as they pose together...which may take awhile! -
When I got Mogley I had an entire list of names written out I was trying to choose from. Because of his breed and markings I wanted some big grand name for him like King or Zeus or something. But when we picked him up and were driving home with him I was looking into his crate and the name Mogley just popped into my head out of nowhere. That name was not anywhere on my long list of names I'd spent many weeks making, I don't know where it came from all of a sudden. We said we'd try it for a while and see if it stuck and it ended up fitting him very well because although his looks command attention, his personality does not. He's very laid back and silly.

I had Truffles for over a month before she had a name, for years after she had a name her vet records still said "No Name Yet". Once we gave trying to find her owner and named her it still took a while to find the right name. Truffles is after the chocolate, she is brown and fluffy and very sweet.

My cats Checkers and Edward are brothers. They were named after the shy little black cat Jenny Linsky's adopted brothers in the books by Esther Averill. (My avatar is an illustration of Jenny Linsky).

George also came with his name; we decided to keep it because that was hubby's father's name, as well as his older brother and brother's son. None of those people are with us any longer, so we liked the idea of still having a George. I'm not entirely sure some of hubby's relatives agreed :)

When I first found my two kitties and their brother, I named them Tux, Tiger and Tabby mainly based on their coloring - I didn't know that much about kitty markings back then. Tiger was the grey tabby boy who found a home w/a friend, his new name is Tyke. Tux got his name from his beautiful tuxedo markings, not very original but he was all rowdy little boy and that name just sort of stuck and fits him. Ginger was originally named Tabby but once I knew I was going to keep the gorgeous little girl I changed her name to Ginger, which I have always loved. The funny thing is, Ginger has a perfect little "T" on her chest - every one told me I should name her something that starts with a T, but I figure that stands for her big brother TUX! ;o)

Chloe came from the shelter as Isabelle... and it just didn't fit. Like others have said, the name just popped into my head and fits her. Mili (many of you helped name her initially - she came to me from Anncetera and was originally named Amelia) Amelia apparently liked high places - thus the name. I wanted something a little more Hawaiian sounding and gradually shortened Amelia to Melia and then to Mili. Mili meants pet... and in hula a motion of mili mili is a loving motion. It fits her.

Snickers was named because of her color. She is a grey tabby with white feet and then she has some orange on her. My mom said it made her look just like a snickers candy bar.

I got Rocky's name because I live in Tennessee and the tennessee song has the verse "Rocky top Tennessee" in it so I thought it made sense...lol!

Sheba came with her name, actually her papers have it as "Bethsheba". Nala from the Lion King movie; Patches was named by my co-worker for obvious reasons. Most of my cats were adults that came with names that I didn't hate, so I kept them as I didn't want to add to their stress by changing them. I am really not good at finding names--I try to wait until the kitten's personality shows, then try to come up with something to match.

My first cat was named Whiskers because she didn't have much fur when I got her at only six weeks. I couldn't think of a good name and so because of her fur, I called her Whiskers.
Sylvester I adopted from an agency and they had named him Boots. I was told cats learn their names better if it is two syllables. I had wanted a tuxedo and had already picked out the name of either Felix after the cartoon or Sylvester after Sylvester and Tweety cartoon. I call Sylvester, Vester or Meistro but sometimes he is furrbuddy.
Mia camed prenamed and I liked the name so much that I kept it. Plus as a grey tabby, she came marked with the famous "M" that comes on most tabby cats. I call Mia, Miamore.

Maverick and Rocky had their names when they came to me. Hudson was named for Saul Slash Hudson the guitarist. It was either that or Koontz for Dean Koontz.

Well, Nora and Gem came with names already in place. (Nora's name is really LeNoir - she had a brother named LeBlanc). Nibs is actually Abigail, or Nabby. I was reading a biography on Abigail Adams when she showed up. The common nickname for Abigail back then was Nabby. So she is commonly referred to as Nabby, NabbyCat, Nibs, or Nibsy. Whew!
Past cats included Rumpelteazer (RT) and Mungojerrie (Jerrie) from "Cats". Gibbie was named after my favorite ballplayer at the time, Kirk Gibson. He was always more of a dignified "Gilbert" cat though.

I love seeing all the names you all have come up with! Kira (cat in my avatar, pronounced Keer'ah) is named after a girl from the sci/fi tv series "Invasion." Dexter is named after the cartoon character from Dexter's Laboratory. Kimi (pronounced Kee'mee) is named after Finnish F1 Driver, Kimi Raikkonen, because she ran so fast, lol! Previously I had fostered a cat I named Bronson (after the Reds pitcher, Bronson Arroyo). I also used to have a cat named Toffee, because of her toffee-colored paws, and one named LeStat--named after the vampire in the Anne Rice novels. That was because as a kitten he used to climb up around our necks and nip at us!
