I have a question. How much poop is good enough.?. My little guy is no more then 3 weeks. Weights almost 13 oz. I feel he may be a runt. Walking and jumping well, eyes almost open all the way. Talks a lot. He is still eating 30ml at a time 6 times a day sometimes 8. He poops every other day. Its normal brown w/ a light green. Hes happy and wants to play and be held. Hes peeing in a liter box, he will stop playing and go in to go. But to poop. He wants a newspaper and walks around and makes a little noise then quates on it and moves his feet while he goes. Smell is the same[bad]. He has some gas about hour and a half before he needs to go. And yes it smells bad to. Its hard to know how much is enough. Ok so like 2 peanuts, 1 peanuts worth. He usually goes 1. Not this is never a blob. Its thicker then toothpaste. Maybe 2X width. I am ruining so much food for everyone. I'm sorry I just have to have good comparisons. My vet really does not want to see him till hes 6 weeks. Since he is eating and is alert and happy he did not sound concern... Anyone have a little guy like this. Any tips. Thanks Bree & Sydne

Hi Bree,
Weekends are slow here. I've added a tag to this thread (up in the top right hand corner). Click on it and you will get a long list of other threads about kitten poop. It's a popular subject here.
Kittens don't poop every day. Yours is a little young to be pooping without stimulation, that may be why he makes noises. Try using a warm wet washcloth in a gentle circular motion on his little bottom. Mom cat would probably still be licking the kittens to get them to go.
It does sound, though, like he's pretty much on track. Is he your avatar? It's a very cute picture.

Yes the avatar is the little guy. He's 16 days old. He was pooping every other day till 3 days ago. Hes farting and went a little bit after I massage him. I just was not sure how much he needs to go. Hes still pretty happy and eating. Weighting in at 13.2 oz Hes just small. I will continue to stimulate and is there something I should put on his bum to keep in not red when he goes? Thanks

I've added another TAG to this thread. There have been many postings during this kitten session from people who are hand raising babies. The questions you have have been discussed previously so you should be able to find some good info if you read through other threads. There are even some links to really good websites about hand raising kittens.
I know someone else found a medication that she put on her baby's little bum to keep it from hurting.
When you say his bum is red when he goes, do you mean just the outside? Or do you mean that his rectum is coming out when he poops. If it is the latter, call the vet first thing in the morning and tell him that.

I'm not experienced with raising very young kittens, but it would make sense to me to that a healthy, growing kitten will have less output than input. They are growing quickly when they are little. If your kitten has a healthy appetite, is eliminating successfully and putting on weight, he is probably OK. There are some very useful websites about raising orphan kittens (as CBM said above) that will give you an idea of how much weight a kitten should be gaining each month.
Please let us know how your baby is doing. :)

I have no help on this topic, but I had to comment! Only here would one see a thread about how much poop is normal! If you think about it we have more dicussions about kitteh poop!
I hand raised Deuter from 10 days, and I just stimulated with each feeding. He didn't always go. His eyes were just opening and he wasn't even 1/2 pound. He is now 14 months and 17 pounds! Keep doing what you are doing Bree, he is beautiful!

Well its been a few days my little one is doing ok. He has pooped a few times and its good in color and form. He just needed more water. I started to water down his formula and that has helped but now he does not want to eat as much. The vet said to stop feeding him in the middle of the night so he will eat more in the am. But hes not. He may even be eating less now. So we are going to the vet Friday. He seems weaker and sleeps more now. Hes not playing and eats less during the day. Hes peeing fine still will go in the liter box. His breathing is ok. I am noticing his breathing is heavier but not faster or in distress. And he is sighing more and will make smaller noises, it sounds weaker then it was 3-4 days ago. He lost 10 oz over 3 days but has gained 4 back. But he has pooped 3 times w/ in those 3 days so I'm not sure what to think. Hopefully the vet will know what to do. Thanks for you prayers.

More prayers on the way, Bree. I hope the vet can sort this out so your little guy keeps putting on weight. :)

Sounds like he has had or has an infection. A cold will decrease his appetite and energy causing him to lose ground. These tiny ones are so fragile.
You are doing a fine job. Keep in close contact with the vet and keep us up to date.Posted 2 years ago by ailuromaniac #
