On Friday I was informed that my 12 month full time job was being changed to an 8 month job. (when the University is in session). Because of the economy several people who work for dining services are getting their hours cut to the bare minimum. This summer I will be off one month without pay and next summer I will be off 3 months not to mention Christmas break, spring break etc. This sucks big time. I was definitely in the wrong place at the wrong time. I might be able to move into a 12 month job if an opening comes up. People are hanging on to jobs these days. Fortunately I am not to far from the point I can take full retirement from the U but that is a little scary to. Last Wed my dog and I found two kittens in our shed. They are scared of me so I am working on getting them used to me. I put one of my dirty shirts out there for them to sleep on so they would get used to my smell. What else can I do to make friends with them? They are a little young probably 6 weeks at this point to leave Mama. (She will be making a trip to the spa once they are old enough). At that point I can get a trap for them. I am also leaving kitten chow for them and I think they are eating it. Mama is fed by the neighbor (she is a stray) but I imagine she is eating some, too.

At least they landed in you shed. They must know that you will help them! Sorry to hear about your job. It is so scary what has happened to the economy. My prayers are with you, especially that if you want it you find a 12 month job. Prayers to you CTR and enjoy watching the kittens--they are so cute.

SM, I told them they were lucky to land in my shed. I stand and talk to them and they look at me and listen but if I move wrong they scamper for safety. The mama is so cute she lays in the yard next door and watches my yard like a hawk. If my do goes out with me she will yowl to get his attention and then run so he won't bother the kittens. He is totally fascinated with them.

Molly was really really hurt when Smitty came to us. I am not sure how I am going to handle bringing the kittens in. This house is really small. I am hoping to find homes for them but don't know how good that will go. They are adorable and when they peek at me it is so cute. I have been trying to get a good photo but so far have not been able to

Sandi, I'm sorry about the job news, that does indeed suck. I hope a 12 month post opens up soon for you. At least you have some sweet kittens to cheer you up! They definitely knew which shed to go for :o)

Those babies are helping me keep my sanity right now. I'm in shock and just feel like I'm going in circles and I do know that just wanting to sit and a corner and cry feeling.

It sounds like you are doing the right things to get the babies use to you. Feeding them, keeping your scent in their noses and talking to them are all good. Maybe you can use them as a fuzzy therapist and talk to them about your job problems. They won't have any suggestions, but at least they will listen.
Will you be eligible for unemployment benefits during the months you aren't working?
Summer and vacation times are hard for working moms since school is out and many day care places take time off too. If you are good with kids, maybe you can find one or two families who would pay you to do daycare when their regular providers aren't working. In many states you can watch a couple of kids without having to get a daycare license.

probably no to unemployment. The good thing is that I do have a year to figure out what to do about a 3 month time off. They are so cute when they listen. Trouble with my shed too many hiding places for little kitties

I haven't seen Mama since early this afternoon. I am a little concerned because she is usually about guarding her babies even though she stands in the next yard and looks daggers at me.LOL I don't think I worry her too much or she would have moved them by now.

CTR...If there are only 2 kitties,It may be quite easy to trap both at the same time. Do you or someone you know have a humane cat trap? If so,you could set it up w/some irresistable nibbles in it & just leave it be for awhile. I did that exact thing w/one of Miss Hissy's litters. There were 2 left & one just followed the other like velcrow & Bingo...I got them both at the same time. They are so darling at that age.
I'm sorry to hear of the work situation. I agree...at least you have alittle bit of time to figure something out. -
Mama is back. I went out and she was sitting at the gate watching me. She was back there with Squeakers the neighbors cat who is a big yellow cat who lets me pet him so I did so and she stayed near by. In fact she was flopped on her back wiggling about. I don't think she is too scared of me but moved if I came closer than 4 feet. Squeakers seems to be a boss cat so when the others see me being allowed to pet him they come to me. I was hoping she would but not yet. The kittens ignored me and went on playing which I also took as a good sign as they usually hide. I just watched them and got to see one of them eat a little of the kitten chow I put out there for them. I feel encouraged. Thanks Feral, I can probably get a humane trap if I need to. I am hoping that they can be with mama a little longer and she will let the next door neighbor pick her up so she will be catchable when it is time for her spa visit. She is barely more than a kitten herself.

I hope Squeakers & any of the other males near by are all neutered because the wiggling going on by mama may mean she's coming back into heat.
Don't want to freak you about that, but,it could happen. When I still had Runt aka Singer, she went into heat again while she was still nursing. I already had her & her puffballs in a large 5' x 5' cage outside so she couldn't trollup around. It did cost more tho because she was in heat when she went for her spa visit.
I'll pray for you that isn't the case here. It is good that she feels comfortable w/you around her babies. She knows good cat people when she sees them. lol.
