  1. My husband and I just adopted the most precious little baby girl from a kill shelter in our town. We named her Kush! They said she was a stray, so we don't know anything about her life up to this point. Since we brought her home a few hours ago, we've got her to play for a few minutes, but generally won't come out from under the couch, even for food. Is this normal? Any advice on how we can get her to open up a little?

  2. Hi KR, welcome to TDK. Don't worry about your new kitten's behaviour, it's quite normal - she's just in a new environment, and it'll take her a few days - maybe more - before she settles in. Can you confine her to one room until she gets to know you better? Just spending some time with her, not necessarily playing, but talking to her will help soothe her. The playing's good, don't forget treats - time, patience and a lot of TLC is what this little girl needs. Look forward to following her progress, when she's a little happier take a picture for us!

  3. MCW is right..Spend time with her and talk to her softly. Leave a TV or radio on when you are not home.
Soon enough you'll have a purring bundle in your lap. :)

  4. Welcome to TDK, KR! And congratulations on the new family member! Your kitten has had a lot to absorb today but don't worry - she'll come around. Keep talking to her but don't try to grab her and make her come out. She needs to become adjusted to your home. Do you happen to have any small stuffed animals? Kush could probably use the comfort of a surrogate mom kitty!

We look forward to seeing lots of pictures and hearing of the Great Adventures of Kush!

  5. Well welcome to TDK! That is a cute kitteh! She is acting very normal--she is scared. She needs time and a lot of love! You will be thrilled as she gets used to her surroundings! There are lots of tips here, but always the best is time and lots of love. In the meantime I hope you join a chat in the Cafe or Night Shift to share even more stories about Kush. You will have tons of them in no time!

  6. UPDATE!!!

Kush has been in and out of hiding for the past few hours. She came up to me and allowed us to pet and hold her. :D

  7. See, just give her time. Before you know it, it is you who will be at her beck and call.
