  3. I think that people either love it or hate it. We fall into the "love it" category but I cook with it so much that MR. WWM has been brainwashed. But I have friends who hate it and say it tastes like "dishwater". I've never actually tasted dishwater but I sure do like cilantro!

  4. LOVE IT! My family hates it, maybe I should sneak it in my "homeade" salsa. Thinking.............

  5. The thing is, a little goes a long way and it also gets stronger over time. I'm not a huge fan, so I always make sure to use just a little. Also, it's the cilantro that catagorizes GREAT guacamole from just 'heh' guacamole!

  6. I agree with FH a little goes a long way! Although I can not imagine it being left out of homemade salsa!! I also like cilantro buy not in mass quantity--just a little quality!

  7. I love cilantro, hubby hates it. But then, I love Brussels sprouts and hubby won't stay in the same house with them. And there's a sound scientific reason for that:

Scientists discovered differences in the ability of humans to taste a bitter synthetic compound called phenylthiocarbamide, or PTC, and they determined that the trait was controlled by genetics (the actual gene for PTC sensitivity was discovered in 2003). For PTC “tasters,” even tiny concentrations of the compound are extremely bitter, while “nontasters” experience little or no taste to the same concentration of PTC.

So maybe cilantro lovers have a gene that makes it taste good to us. I like the smell of skunks too (as long as it's not too close).

  8. And don't forget Pico de gallo, it does put a little zing in that too.

  10. Hmmmm .... I learned to love cilantro ~ Dad still hates cilantro.... We both love brussels sprouts.... (and all kinds of cabbage; depending on the prep) Not sure there is any correlation here ;-) Any foodies want to add to the comentary??

  11. OK, I'll give it a try and see if I'm a 'taster' or 'nontaster'. I adore brussel sprouts.

  12. I must be one of the few Texans that can't stand cilantro. I think that it tastes "dusty". LOVE brussel sprouts!!!! I don't even like a little bit of cilantro, even in salsa! Abbey (Black and White Kitty mama) is developing a taste for it. I can't understand it. Must be living in Austin that has caused this. They put it in everything!

  13. Chee, I've never heard of people disliking cilantro, much less it "tasting like soap"--which is totally incomprehensible to me. I think loving the stuff is a requirement for living in Texas or Hawaii (where it's called "Chinese parsley"). You can't have Tex-Mex without it--that's like having vegetarian steak.

Still, I know what it's like to be in the small-yet-passionate minority. I am one of perhaps three people on the entire planet who hate E.T. and the iPhone. Don't even get me started on the vilest substance on the face of the planet: root beer.

    *pass the boiled peanuts, please--yum-MEE!*
