   Hi guys,
   Not too sure if this has been already covered (I could'nt find the search icon to look through previous treads:( ).

   One of our kittens, (15 week old mia) is ill.
   We basically woke up this morning to find she had been sick a few times and had diarrhea.
   My partner and I are really worried about her as she has not really been her usual self since we got our second kitten (marley) a week ago. They both seem to be getting along better since we first introduced them, but still not 100% which is expected.

   We also have recently changed her food (the original one we used to get for her seems to be always out of stock), and for the past couple of days she has not been eating very much atall, but still drinks her water.

   As I said, she does not seem to be acting like she usually does, but does not seem to be distressed in anyway.
   She has heeved a coupld of times since she was last sick this morning but nothing else has come up.

   Do you think the addition of the new kitten and the change of food could have caused her to be ill?

   Also how long should we wait before we take her to the vets etc to get checked out?.

   Thanks for any info on this, its really appreciated.

   Hi, Lucy, I added a couple of tags to your post (in pink, top right hand side of page). If you click on these, you will find previous posts discussing this.

   In short, yes, the change of food could well have done this, and the stress of the new kitten probably hasn't helped. It is best to change over food gradually, little kittens have sensitive stomachs, by mixing a little of the new food into the old and gradually increasing it.

   I'm glad she's still drinking her water. The main danger with small kittens who are vomiting and/or have diarrhoea is dehydration. Little kittens can get dehydrated very quickly. Even better than water is pedialyte or, if you don't have that, gatorade. To test whether kitten is dehydrated, do the 'tent' test, i.e. pick up a handful of skin from the neck and let go. If it snaps back, that's normal, kitten is hydrated. If it goes back more slowly or worse, 'tents' (ie stays up), kitten needs fluids fast. The vet can do this best by injecting subcutaneous fluids.

   I would keep a close eye on her and if she stops drinking heaps or if she appears to deteriorate in any way or you do the tent test and she appears dehydrated, get her to the vet. Kittens can't vomit and/or have diarrhoea for very long or they will get dehydrated.

   Vet time. It is possible Mia picked up something Marley brought with him. Or is could be the sudden diet changes (kitty tummies are really sensitive to this)

   Most important is hydration. Pick up some pedialyte to help with this and watch her closely. You may have an emergency visit in your future but if she still drinks and is not deteriorating you can nurse through till Monday.

   We've decided to take Mia to the vets this morning, as she was sick again last night and is not keeping down any food.
   She eat yesterday afternoon but brought it all up late last night.

   Really worried about my little kitten. She doesnt look well atall =(

   Lucy, I'm so sorry to hear this too. Keep trying to give her water or, preferably, pedialyte, as dehydration is the worst risk at this stage, until you can get her to the vet. And please let us know -- we worry about the kitties too. {{{HUGS}}} to you and Mia.

   Sorry to hear Mia is so sick, my little kitten has been sick and had diarrhea over the past couple of days as well. I guess the best thing to do is make sure she is still drinking lots as you dont want her to get dehydrated.

    Hi all,

    Just thought i would keep you updated on Mia and Marley.
    She was still looking poorly the last couple of days eating very little. So we decided to take her to the emergancy vets yesterday morning.

    We got Marley when he was 12 weeks old off a breeder online. The breeder explain to us that he had scaps around his nose due from breat feeding? We didnt really see it as a big issue, so took him home. She also explain that he hadnt had any jabs but had been wormed and flead. Due to the problems we have had with Mia, He still hasnt had any jabs but is booked in for his first one this friday. We have had him now for almost 2 weeks. We have noticed whilst he sleeps he breaths very loud??? Also he has really bad breath (worst then Mia's)
    We explain this to the vet yesterday whilst she examined Mia, and she explain it sounded like Marley had passed on some kind of virus to Mia making her poorly (even thought Marley seems fine) We have now been given antibiotics for Mia, and have been told she has to be wormed/flead again and have all her infections repeated!!
    We basically have to wait for Mia to recover and get them both injected. They havnt really had the chance to bond like new kittens should because we have had to keep them seperated due to Mia's illness.

    It was really annoying that we had to go through this and see little Mia ill. I think it goes to show, be carefull who you buy your pets. We know now that a pedigree breeder should have atleast given Marley his first jab and a full veterinary examination.
    We dont blame Marley, and are just happy that both kittens should soon be healthy happy buddies :-)
