  1. Ok, I work at a university police department that has a feral cat population problem. We have volunteers that come in and trap/fix/release the cats, so we're working on controlling the problem.

We found 5 abandoned kittens on the campus, and me, being the cat lover that I am, said I would foster them. Thankfully another dispatcher agreed to take two, so that left me with 3.

I bought the kitty formula and bottles and have searched the web on advise. When I fed them with the bottles, they didn't suckle, they bit with their back teeth and pulled on the nipple. So the advise that I've read said that they were ready for soft kitten food. I bought kitten chow and soaked it in the formula (after I put it in a plastic bag and crushed it with a hammer)so it was real mushy.

All three are eating the food, but they aren't drinking water, so I added water to the cat food and formula.

Not real sure of their age, but from what I can guess they are at least 4 weeks old. Their ears are up, they walk around (not gracefully). But they have yet to poop. I've had them for 3 days. I introduced a litter box tonight and placed each one in it and took their paw and scratched. I have the 3 girls and co-worker took the 2 boys. His are playing. Mine are active and getting more curious by the day.

I just want to make sure that I'm not doing them more harm than good. I can hardly go to sleep at night because I'm afraid somethings going to happen to them while I sleep. No money to take them to the vet, but I have found homes for all of them when they are ready to go.

Please help. I've tried to stimulate their behinds and abdomen like the websites suggest, but no luck.

  2. Hi, DStar,

You sound like you are doing just fine and bless you for looking after these kittens. You may already have come across these sites but they all have good advice on raising kittens:

    Useful websites: http://www.kittenrescue.org/pages.php?pageid=15
    http://www.fanciers.com/cat-faqs/orphans.shtml
    http://www.feralcat.com/raising.html

As for the poop question, this comes up a lot on TDK. I've added two tags, poop and constipation, to your thread (they're in pink, top right-hand side of the page). If you click on these, you can read previous threads on this subject, in brief, little kittens don't need to poop every day but if they still haven't pooped in another, say, couple of days, you might want to check them out with a vet. Keep trying with the stimulation before and after meals.

They probably don't need extra water if you're adding kitten milk replacement to the soft food, and also soft food has a lot of water in it. One TDKer used to recommend putting a few drops of food colouring in their water bowls so the kittens could see it more easily.

What did you crush with a hammer? Do you mean you bought dry cat food, crushed it and then added the KMR? I would tend to go for soft kitten food (the kind that comes in tins and pouches) for now, and mix that with a little KMR.

You've come to the right place, we have some very experienced and knowledgeable kitten foster mums on TDK and they'll be logging in in a couple more hours, so keep checking back for more suggestions and we'll try to answer any questions! Good luck with these babies!

  3. Welcome to TDK DStar, you must have your hands full with 3 kittys. Thank you for rescuing them and great job with the TNR(trap, neuter, release).

  4. Woohoo Sucess! Thank you soooo much for the advice!

All three went to poop in the litter box today. I'm taking them in to the vet today just to make sure they are ok and because the little calico has matted eyes and keeping them clean has not help.

Next question...When will I know they are ready to go to their new homes? The officers I work with are such great guys! 2 of them even admit that they are cat-lovers, 1 just tried to keep his tough macho image by saying "the kitten's for my kids," (as he carried the kitten around and baby-talked to it...lol!)

  5. Yay! We get very excited over poop on this site! Yes, we're nuts but what great news! In the meantime, you can bathe your calico's eyes gently with a bit of cotton wool and luke-warm tea from a teabag.

Normally kittens are ready to go to their new home from about 12 weeks -- they're still pretty fragile before then and it's good to make sure they go to their new homes with all their shots and dewormed and vet checked, etc. (If you have definite new owners in view, you might want to see if they can help you out with the fees for that...)
