Pets Transmitting MRSA to Humans?

(18 posts)
  1. well, this dosen't surprise me. when i first became a nurse 25 years ago there was no such thing as animals to human transmissions, because of the difference in DNA. but now with the Bird flu , swine flu ( which is no longer called that) , Ebola. HIV... i'm not surprised.. i guess just be sure there is good care after a bite and good follow up. i think it's a very interesting article and will be interested in seeing other's comments on this...

  2. I hate to disagree Beth but Epizootics have always been with us.
The most well known were Tetanus, the Plague and Rabies. The common cold is a disease that we share freely with our pets and they with us.

  3. Can your pet catch your cold or flu? Well, the simple answer is NO. The viruses that cause the common cold are species-specific, meaning that the human cold and flu viruses are specific for humans, cat cold viruses are specific to cats, dog cold viruses are for dogs, etc. Yes, your cat and dog can get colds, but they are specific to their species. And, along the same lines, you cannot catch a cold from your dog or cat. See the following resourceshttp://www.cf.ac.uk/biosi/subsites/cold/commoncold.html

according to my CDC book , yes tetnus is found in soil , but rare from a bite but if you get the tetus shot you will be fine What Causes It?
Bacterial spores enter the body by way of animal or insect bites, surgical wounds, needle injection sites, burns, splinters, ulcers and infected umbilical cords -- and by the proverbial rusty nail. Be particularly suspicious of any wound caused by a dirty or dusty object that has been outdoors or in contact with soil.

i have been a RN, BSN for 25 years , not i am not CDC expert but i do treat alot of dieases and flu's and pneumonia, HIV , TB ectra. i do know with the help of God the plague will not return , neither will the flu of 1918. the dieases today where not heard of when i was a young , cute , thin, nursing student and new nurse. i think we only worried about hepitis.. HIV was not around or just brand new and MRSA was unheard of. we had no superbugs that i knew of.

i can honsetly say i have never treated anyone with rabies. maybe in the 1800's early 1900's they had rabies. but since vaccinations , it is hopefully rare.

i'm sorry to be wordy and rant.. i had a long weekend at the hospital.. and i am pooped. lol.... i gave blood to 3 patients and ended up doing theraputic phelibotomy ( taking blood out of people ) on 4 patients.. good grief... every pt i got either needed blood or had to much.... just my luck !!

  8. yes i know and i heard of all the dieases you mentioned when i was young and cute nurse. but i just never treated them so i never thought about them..lol... i was to busy looking at the cute interns..lol... you are right those dieases have been around a long time... i was just getting ready to post that... i forgot about them when i first posted because i guess i deal with the here and now. but you are right... the only thing is no matter how much lydia sprays me with mucus , disgusting as it is .. i won't catch a cold from her.... i'll just be grossed out... which is enough for me !! you have good input and thank you for reminding me ...

  10. yes it is true about the toxoplasmosis , when i was prgenant i had to be careful not to go near the litter box. yes you can get that from cat feces... i tell all my new mom's when i teach a prebirthing class at the hospital .. let your hubby or SO change the litter box. i had 6 kids and never got it and kept my 2 cats... you are right my dear !!

  11. I did not mean to jump on you but I always get nervous when someone with a strong backgroun authority makes a mis-statement of facts such as "when i first became a nurse 25 years ago there was no such thing as animals to human transmissions..."

I now know your intent was to state you had not experienced cases because they were rare. I am not convinced of the rarity. Lots of Salmonella cases had to be associated with reptile pets but were passed off as food poisoning.

Staph infections from bites and scratches were fairly common but limited in virulence. MRSA is our fault from too much over treatment with antibiotics and being too lazy to take the whole course once we feel better.

One thing I noticed from the CDC list is the glaring absence of the mention of ANTHRAX.

  12. ooh you are fine... you know 25 years is a long time ago... well.. not that long.. lol.. but i guess i was thinking of the here and now.. not a long time ago.. my background is medical and surgical ( not OR) and Labor and delivery and post partum , ante partum , and spinal , head injury rehab, ICU and IMC , ER .... i am a clinical supervisor and also preceptor , and i teach soon to be new mom's ( i had lots of expirence) and lactation , so i really do delve into history. but yes my background and education is very strong and i have heard of all those things. i handle work one day at a time. i am the person who calls the CDC when we had a TB case. so i have a good repore with them.

so i apologize to you.. i have heard of all those dieases , but i am so tired from work this weekend . they didn't occur to me... i send you lots of hugs !!

HIPPA....

  14. Remember those little turtles they used to sell as pets in five-and-dime stores? (Remember five-and-dime stores?) I understand they had to quit selling them because they were transmitting salmonella.

  15. ooh i love those turtles.. i wondered why they stopped selling them .. they were so cute !! oooh poor turtles.. ooh poor people who got salmonella...
