  2. I'm NOT watching Jon and Kate. I'm afraid I don't have much patience with "mega-family" shows. Human beings were not designed to give birth to litters or to rear their young in herds. Parents are overtaxed and children do not get the individual attention they need. Besides, these days we're constantly being told we need to conserve resources and "minimize our carbon footprints". What kind of "carbon footprint" are people producing when they have 8, 12, or 18 children--especially when all, or most, of them are born at the same time?

I would like to read in the news tomorrow that, because of the stresses it created for their family, Jon and Kate are giving up their show and moving to some secluded spot where they can have some privacy while raising their family. How many people think that is likely to happen?

My favorite reality shows are Forensic Files and the various Food Network competitions.

  3. I HATE JON AND KATE! That woman is a real b***h! I hope he walks out on her! I love Forensic Files and (gasp) my guilty pleasure is Tori and Dean on Oxygen. Other than those I really don't much care for reality tv, there isn't much "real" about it! LOL

  4. I do feel sorry for the kids tho!

  5. ooh i hope they give up their show , but kate is so money hungry and jon isn't far behindd her. they would never give up that show. those kids are their paycheck.. the kids are exploited and they don't care about them. yes they have a huge family, i have 6 kids but i had 1 set of twins ( naturally). i feel sorry for the kids, having a shrew for a mother. i won't watch it because kate is abusive and jon dosen't care. kate dosen't give a hoot about the carbon foot prints , she uses paper plates .. lol...

  6. Amen, Leeny!! I just got 'hooked' on John & Kate when they had a marathon on Memorial Day. My feeling now is that I, for one, will not contribute to the dismantlement of their family. Last week's show was all about John--not the kids. If they would focus on the kids, which it used to, I'd be glad to watch. Since their shake-up, though, it's been all about either John or Kate and what they can get from having their own show. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if all of this 'John had an affair' bit, etc., was all a publicity stunt. I'm tired of hearing about them and wish they'd both just focus on their kids--whether they stay together or not.

  7. i like ghost programs like paranormal state and TAPS they are good !!

  8. Molly, I've felt sorry for the kids since the minute they were born.

Mr. L. was watching Tori and Dean once, and I'm afraid it really grossed me out when they started discussing the sexual acts they perform. I also got really ticked with the $25,000 birthday party Tori gave their 1-year-old. I have trouble paying for food and medicine at the end of the month!

  9. amen leeny and fondahonda.. it's not about the kids anyomore .. it's about kate who has the personalty of a shrew !!

  10. I like "Time Warp" and have enjoy "MythBusters". There are lots of Science shows I pickup while surfing to see if there is anything interesting. "Ace of Cakes" is a fun watch. Archeology, Astronomy, Big Cats or little cats featured in documentaries (stand alone or series).... For fiction I like "House", "Star Trek" (except Voyager), "Smallville". Nothing else is on the regular diet.

  11. Does anyone remember the first "reality show"? It was back in the 70s on PBS, and it was called "An American Family". The big deal with that was that the parents' marriage broke up on camera.

  12. AIL, I love "Ace of Cakes"! I understand Duff got his show by competing in one of the Food Network's cake competitions. He didn't win, but the producers were so impressed with his out-of-the-box way of working (I think his cake had a motor installed in it) that they offered him his own show.

  13. It's rumored that John & Kate make $75,000.000 per episode. They've made plenty of money to put each child through college and to live comfortably on their 24+ acre land in their million dollar home. Give the show up!! Kate is so obsessed with the limelight that I don't think she'd do that and John doesn't have the guts to speak up and do what he feels is right. They have both become different people because of the limelight. I miss seeing their comraderie with the children--especially Aiden! :)

  14. I echo all that Leeny said about Jon and Kate. Also, I don't like the reality shows but I admit I do sometimes watch Gene Simmons Family Jewels or Dog the Bounty Hunter. I watched Hammertime (MC Hammer family reality show) last night only because I was curious as to how it would be. I don't think I will watch it again as it seems to be just the same as Gene Simmons show and one family reality show is enough. Also, I have no sympathy for MC Hammer who was so talented and who made millions and millions of dollars only to manage to let it all drain away with excessive spending (would take an entourage of 300 people with him) and then go bankrupt instead of investing it and trying to protect his earnings. As that famous saying goes...stupid is as stupid does.

  15. Leeny was that about the Loud Family? If so I remember it!

My take on reality shows is this (and only my take, I don't begrudge anybody their entertainment, guilty pleasures, etc, because God KNOWS I have enough of my own :)

The average reality show has 1000s of hours of footage shot, and that footage is fashioned into whatever makes it the most dramatic and keeps people watching.

That doesn't make it any different than a scripted series to me.

I will admit to watching the finale of the Housewives of New Jersey because I heard so much about the table-flipping my curiousity got the better of me. lol

  17. Beth, you are a woman after my own heart! I love anything paranormal or spooky :)

  18. Deb, can I have Milo for a bit??

Posted 2 years ago by HuddysMama #

  19. oh gosh! I love the paranormal ones too! i only watch tori and dean because I too, got hooked while off for surgery. i watched an all day marathon when I was tired of my all day CNN marathons! LOL i guess i thought that show would be a real trainwreck because i find TORI to be a real trainwreck. i heard that jon and kate do get between 75000-150000 PER EPISODE! I would take just one episode's pay and be happy! i think anyone of us here would, we are just normal! lol

  20. OMG, I so remember the Louds, that was groundbreaking TV at the time. I have never watched Jon and Kate, I only know about them from what I see in the media but there is a TON of that....like others I feel sorry for their kids but the whole premise of their show has morphed into something out of control and I suspect that they would never consider Leeny's suggestion above to go off quietly and solve their problems in privacy for the sake of their kids...because it's not about the kids anymore, neither one of them really seems to care about that.

I like to watch some reality shows, but more of the contest shows such as American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance? I also like Top Chef and Top Design, stuff like that...is that considered Reality TV?

  21. I think it is, Annie.

Posted 2 years ago by Leeny #

  22. I think so too, they have real people in them ;o) I am missing Project Runway, that show used to be fun, but they had some sort of legal issues and haven't been on in awhile...bummer!

Posted 2 years ago by Annie R #

  23. OK I forgot "Project Runway" I guess because it has been so long since the kerfuffle about moving to Lifetime. But it will be back in August.

I actually pick up a lot of sewing tips and ideas that I can use from that program.

Posted 2 years ago by ailuromaniac #

  24. oh beth, you got me started! the other ones that really bug me are the ones with all the "little people"! aargh! working my whole life in health care i just don't see people that are dwarfs, or people missing limbs, or people in wheelchairs as "different". they are just people. when did that become the premise for a television show?? can i make a show called "miracle brain surgery kid" and get 100000 an episode????

    Posted 2 years ago by mollycat71 #

  25. Why don't you try it, Molly? Pitch it to one of those medical channels. They'd probably be more likely to make a single episode about you than a series, but picking up the hundred thousand once would be nice.

Posted 2 years ago by Leeny #

  26. AI that is great news, I'll be watching for it. Will it be on Lifetime in August? It's amazing how well all those designers can sew, kudos to you too for being a seamstress, I'm a home ec dropout! When I was in high school I wanted to be a fashion designer till I learned you had to know sewing....oh well...

Posted 2 years ago by Annie R #

  27. Ah, Annie, I got two degrees in home economics back when it still existed. I took every home ec course my high school offered except Man in the Kitchen. The first course I took was sewing. When I was in high school and college, I made all my own clothes. I've lost that skill now; haven't touched a sewing machine in nearly 30 years. It's a skill I'd like to recapture.

Posted 2 years ago by Leeny #

  28. I wish I would have paid closer attention to sewing when my mom tried to teach me. I was too busy running and playing softball and tennis and riding my bike to care! What I wouldn't do to go back to that!

    Posted 2 years ago by mollycat71 #

  29. Leeny you have my admiration! My mother in law has her degree in home ec and became a nurse from there, it's really about learning how to manage a household which is definitely knowledge everyone needs. I wish I had tried harder to learn how to sew, it seemed like I had 10 left thumbs so I got frustrated and let it get the better of me. One practical class I wish I would have taken was Auto Shop, it's empowering to know how to fix your car if you have to. But back in the early 70's girls in shop were as scarce as boys in Home Ec class.

  30. I learned my sewing from the Bible...."As ye sew so shall you rip." I cannot count the number of seams I have had to resew.
I would pick a project (usually one beyond my ken) and dig in. Mom got me a stack of "how to" books and I'd dig in. If I did not understand a step in the pattern instructions, out came the books.
Mom and I draped my wedding gown. I still remember the voices from the livingroom.

SO: They sound serious don't you think we should go in and stop them?
Dad: If you think you are man enough to get between them you are welcome to try. Me, I am staying put.
