  1. We were allowed to get a kitten when I was about six. "Kot" was an all white female of a litter from a farm Up North.

  2. When I was really little we had lots of kitties, so many I can't pick just one out. But later on we had been catless for several years when this orange baby started hangin out in the back yard...My sister and I cared for that kitty for about 15 years..After we both had moved out we shared custody.

  3. my first pet was a collie named " ask him yourself" his real name was askhimyousef blockamora ( his breed line ).... he was a full bred collie and i loved him. my dad changed his name to " ask him" because it was easier for us little kids to say. i loved that dog he was a black and white collie and he was my best friend. we got him when we lived in Fort Rucker Alabama. we were second in command on the base so we had a big house. people would come up to me and say " whats your dogs name?" and i would say " ask him yourself" and the person whould say " hey dog what's your name?" and ask him would bark !! we took him to New york when we moved and he lived to be 15 and he was hit by a car.. i cried for weeks after his death and still miss him... i loved that dog....

  4. My first pet happened when I was 12 and got my chinchilla Kirby. I was so excited to pick him out because my entire life all I got was "NO PETS". My parents finally gave in after showing them tons of research I've done about chinchillas and ensuring them they are quiet, safe, non stinky, and I would take care of it. We went to the mall and picked out the tiniest, grey, fluffiest chinchilla. I named him Kirby and I was so excited to get him home. I played with him daily.

Kirby is still alive today and living with my mom. After all the fuss about not getting pets, she fell in love with the little guy! She wouldn't let me take him with me when I moved out! He even travels with her to the beach home and has his own special cage to stay at there. He's 10 years old now and still has zero health problems and is a strong loving cheeky little guy.

I didn't have any other pets after that until I moved out and was finally allowed to indulge in my love for kitties / animals and I got Feeny! as well as a hamster MJ (rip).

  8. I almost forgot about our first dog (which was about the same time as kitty)
Rusty a Shetland Sheepdog/simiilar to a small Collie...his name from the breeder was Gondolier of Lynwood! Very shy but got along with "Kot".

  9. My first pet was when I was 3 years old! He was a beautiful siamese named Puddin. I thought he looked like he stuck his face in a bowl of chocolate pudding--so his name was Pud. My Dad hated that cat--he got on the counters--well duh he's a cat!!! When my parents got Colonel the Great Dane, Pud went to my aunt and uncle. He lived to be an old cat--22 years old! His foavorite place to lounge--the refridgerator! I loved that cat! Colonel on the other hand....he had issues with where to potty!

  10. When we were small, our family had several kitty cats - boys and girls alike, but not at the same time. All the boys were named Claude and all the girls were named Maude!

  12. Hmmm. first pet was a cat named Blue when I was 5 or 6. My grandmother an I were at a friends house. There was an old shed out back where a mother had hidden to have litter. I wanted one really bad...so, my grandmother and her friend laughed and said "if you can catch one, you can have it." Off to the shed I ran, came back about 30 minutes later with Blue. She ended up being our barn cat, and was very sweet kitty....thus the beginning of the Crazycatman ;)

  13. My first pet only lasted about a month. The people up the street had a cat that had kittens. I FINALLY convinced Mom to let me have one. A sweet grey kitty that I named Smoky (I know - original, but I was maybe 8 ha ha). Mom would find Smoky either sleeping on my neck, or playing with my hair in the morning. That was the end of Smoky. Mom was sure the cat was going to "scratch my eye out" or suffocate me. We had to take Smoky to my Aunt's house... she had dogs, cats and horses.

My next pet was not until I was married (the 2nd time). We got the runt of the litter of Australian Shepherds. Maggie never was more than a small ball of mostly white fluff... She was a spirited little thing. We'd let her out and she'd round up all the kids who were playing at the end of the cul-de-sac where we lived.

  14. Ah, when I was 9 we were all in the back yard playing softball. I was playing in the outfield when a scraggly, torn up cat waddled into our yard. She didn't run off so my dad shoo'ed us away and walked over to her. It was when he got close he realized she had been hit by a car. He started barking out orders to us kids and my mom, before you knew it we had mobilized a little medical station. My dad was a dental surgeon and she held onto him for dear life. He cleaned all the blood off her, bandaged her tail and paws, treated her wounds and even "prescribed" her some pain meds (only in a much smaller dose!). We got her a nice box with towels in it and put her in our shed away from the other animals. He took such good care of her, she recovered only with a kink in her tail. That was in May. July 5th I went outside to get the Sunday paper and I found her in the driveway with blood pouring out of her mouth! Our paper kids poisoned her with rat poisoning! I was crushed having found her and always feel horrible on July 5th. 23 Days later we went and got a cat on a farm, thus beginning our family of cats which grew to 8!

  15. Oh MC, how sad, people are so heartless....I totally understand how you feel, something like that stays with a child forever. Bless your family for getting more kitties in honor of that poor baby, your Dad sounds like a wonderful guy!

  16. That is why I KNOW he is at the bridge playing with and enjoying every single cat there!

  17. We had dogs before my time, when my sibs were little (I'm the youngest), so I only remember the cats. There was Chipsey, who had kittens and my Grandmother, who lived next door, took one and named her Rascal.
The strongest cat memory, though, is Jinx, probably because she grew up with me and she was older than I. She was a beautiful black kitty with a brown undercoat. I think she lived to 19 or 20; old for an indoor/outdoor cat. As an old timer, she took off, presumably to be away from her humans when she went to The Bridge. However, the paper boy brought her back several weeks later - apparently she wasn't ready after all! Another kitty had come into the family household by then, (our family can not be catless!) and Jinx stuck around for a few more months, her purpose being to show the new kitty the ropes!

  18. MC, that's so sad - no wonder you feel sad on July 5. Hubby and I believe our beautiful black long hair Smokie was poisoned. He is always very good about putting anything toxic locked away. She was our first cat that we had as a married couple and she was only a year and a half old. The cliche, one door closes, another opens - well, if we didn't lose Majestic Smokie, we probably would never have known Shaddo. Our Lord never stops providing for us.

  19. I think that is true. God always gives us another (or 2, or 3 or more) to love!

    Posted 2 years ago by mollycat71 #

  20. MC and Joan, you are both so right....I thank God every day for calling me out to the woodpile to see what my son's dog was so excited about - he was always going on about something! That's where I found Tux, Ginger and their brother Tyke. They were little orphan kitties crying, but I never would have heard them if Colonel hadn't pointed them out to me. I firmly believe God sent them to me.

  21. The first animal we had was our cat Moe--I was probably 3 or 4 maybe, but he was born before I was--My Aunt had his mother, Tibby, and another Aunt took Moe when he was a kitten--but developed allergies so we took him--he was born in March, 1947 and died in April 1970! At 23 years old. My Dad didn't like him and only "tolerated" him until one day he was sitting on the side porch and Moe came up and got in his lap--Daddy immediately threw him out in the yard, but Moe was determined-back on the porch and up in his lap--about 4 or 5 times--finally, Daddy said "cat, you've got guts--guess you can stay". Some time after that, we moved into an apartment and couldn't have Moe with us, so we took him back to the farm at my Aunt's where he was born--after we moved again into a house, we had been at the farm one week-end, had gotten back in the car, Daddy got out of the car, went to the back yard and came back with Moe in his arms. He said the other cats didn't like him and he wasn't being treated right. So Moe was back with us till he passed.

  24. I was about 6 when I got to get my first pet. All the others had been my brothers pets but Mom and Dad decided that they wanted two cats. They were going to raise Siamese kitties. We got one boy and one girl from different litters. I got to name them. The girl got names Missy because she, in true Siamese form has a prissy attitude. The boy was harder. After my Mom landed at the bottom of the staircase but before the ambulance got there I asked..."Should we name him Tripper...Trip her..." When she got out of the hospital (nothing was broken) she laughed and the name stuck.

  25. Sorry Alica's mom but the story of Tripper gave me a good hearty laugh. Glad your mom was ok!

  26. My first pet was a cat named Mitzi. She was older than I was. Almost every picture taken of me when I was a child is with poor Mitzi hanging from my arms. My mother says I was ALWAYS carrying her around. She would come up to my pillow at night, settle next to my head, and then start shoving. When I woke up my head was always off the pillow and she was curled up on the pillow sleeping. She had one litter of kittens that I remember. She had them in the basement and then spent an entire day transfering them, one at a time, upstairs behind the radio cabinet. They all went to good homes. She was also a very good hunter and would often bring my mother "presents" - Mom was less than thrilled. After Mitzi we always had dogs (my younger brother is allergic to cats).

Gini, I remember when Taco was very young you took a picture of him and Kirby the chinchilla. That was adorable.

  28. the first pet I can remember was "Fluffy", a big white cat, when I was probably 4-5 yrs old.... he was a big white cat...... from there we went to "Gironamo", a big black cat, then to many of mine in college over the years.....I guess we've always been a cat family, except my one dog when I was 12 (Jennifer) ... she lived to a ripe old age of 18 (old for a dauchsand).... oh my *snif* fond memories of all my "rainbow" crossees.....

  29. My first cat was named Kitty. I was very little still(dont' remember how old) and we got Kitty from a neighbor who was moving and couldn't take her with. She was already an adult cat by then, chubby and white with orange splotches. My family tells me that I walked up to her and said Hi, my names is... what's yours? Guess I didn't understand that she wasn't going to answer me back.
I do remember her favorite spot was on the back of the couch and I was only tall enough that my head was the same level as the couch and I would walk up to her and put my head by her and she would bat at my head. She was front declawed already when we got her so I thought it was really funny when she did that and not knowing I was really annoying her haha. She lived until I was in 4th grade and not long after that we got Calvin and Baby. A lady my mom worked with had a cat that had kittens. We were only supposed to pick out one. Calvin was smart and crawled up in my Dad's lap right away and fell asleep. And baby was the runt so we surely couldn't leave him behind. I asked my dad if we could try them both over the weekend and see which one we liked better haha. He finally agreed to "test them both out" but really we all knew neither of them was leaving again.
