Study Links Childhood Abuse With Cancer in Adults
(3 posts)-
This is something we're currently investigating in our own research. Rather than child abuse, though, the childhood stressors at which we're looking are poverty, a lack of community resources, and racial discrimination, particularly in combination. We're not looking specifically at cancer, either, but at more general health outcomes. Not long ago I printed out an article from JAMA for my boss that suggested prevention of childhood hardship would be the most effective way of preventing chronic illness in adulthood. Elevated levels of stress hormones are known to suppress immune functioning, and the more chronic the stressor, the more the hormones stay elevated.
