  1. Well J-man and I went for an evening bike ride to check out a nearby lake. We biked through a nature reserve on our way. We were going to use it as a short cut but about 100 metres from our chosen exit from the park we rounded a corner and I saw a large cat leaving the path in front of us and disappearing into the brush.
I mostly only saw the rear of it. It was a light tan colour, about 2-3 times larger than a domestic cat, had a very short tail that was the same colour as it's body, maybe slightly darker. It didn't have any obvious marking that I could see but it was walking into bushes at the time. It had very powerful looking hind legs and I think I saw the tips of it's ears which looked black.

Needless to say J-man and I were wary and decided to turn around. Biked an extra couple of minutes to previous exit and then biked along a parallel road. Our first ever big cat. I definitely feel that I have lived a sheltered life in nz.
I have checked photos of bobcats as I know that type of cat is common here in socal, but the tails look too long for what i saw and they have distinctive markings of dots on hind legs. It still could have been a bobcat but I don't know what other cats are around here so I'm curious if anyone has an suggestions.

I have told J-man I won't going biking or walking through there again until I know what kind of cat it was an I get one of those ear piercing personal alarms.

  2. Really does sound like a bobcat tho, and the markings can be somewhat obscure. We used to have them around here but none have been seen in about a decade. Sigh, you were lucky. I would love to see one out in the wild.

  3. Airy, it does sound like a bobcat, the hind legs would be a good indication of it. The tail can be a bit longer, sometimes looks like someone cut it off almost about the length of some of the different hunting dog breeds. Up in the area where you live, they do have them in the small hills areas.

  4. I have a friend in Texas who has a bobcat as a pet. He is very tame and totally domesticated. She also has 2 dogs, a *regular* cat, 2 peacocks and several chickens. You can check her and her zoo out at www.realtexasblog.com . Her step son just got married so I'm sure you'll see pix of the wedding there too.

  5. OMG! Way to give your Mum a fright. A bobcat is certainly bigger than a pi**ed off weta. Should you report it or not Airy. Remember there was a bobcat warning out when you two first moved onto campus. Look after yourselves and read up on what you should do if this should happen again.

  6. Jadete, that website is well done, and the recipe for slow cooking chicken sounds delicious... http://realtexasblog.com/2009/06/07/real-texas-roasted-pablano-stuffed-chicken-breasts/

Morning MS or rather late evening.

  7. Might be a Lynx - very similar to a Bob cat, but can have a tail that is 5 - 6 inches long.......

  8. Thanks AV, are there lynx in Socal? must google.

  10. MS, there are Lynx cats throughout this part of the U.S., they have larger ears with tufts that cannot usually be missed.

  11. I have only one thing to say.

    Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeekkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk!

I love big cats but I prefer one of us to be safely behind bars (preferably me -- I hate wild things in cages).

Please be careful, Airy. Guess wetas don't look so scary now, hunh? Definitely get one of those shrieky alarm things!

  12. Just been googling lynx and bobcats, they have different tails too. Really interesting, they certainly make anything we have look tame. The worst wild thing to meet would have to be a wild boar, but that's only deep in the bush.

  13. MS, I admire your aplomb, in the face of your daughter's exciting encounter. I have no intention of ever meeting a wild boar in the bush, but if I do, I'll climb a tree. Would that work for bobcats and lynxes?

Seriously though, how amazing to see one in the wild. A fabulous experience as PJ says -- but still scary too...

  14. Jcat, there's nothing I an do. She left the nest and I have to let her fly free.

  15. You taught her good judgement and gave her a great sense of humour, MS. That should see Airy through most things :)

  16. jcat, hmmm no probably wouldn't work with either of the cats as they climb pretty well, lol.

MS, so true but still scary for her. We have javelina's here in AZ, besides being stinky (they smell pretty much) aren't really dangerous unless you get between the mother and her babies, then she will attack anything.

  17. Javelina are odd looking creatures.
Jcat, the girls had years in the Guide movement and that certainly taught them common sense, how to think for themself, survival etc.

  18. Guess its just the common sense thing, there are so many different critters here....coyotes, bears, various types of cats, packs of dogs (that people have abandoned), etc., the more that humans have encroached on their territories, the more they are being encountered. Probably why I have a walking stick as tall as me that I take even when just walking in the neighborhood, you just never know what you will encounter. Tough on a bike though, the screeching alarm thingie should work pretty well with her, that and maybe one of the sprays might be good too.

  19. Javelina's are strange looking, and they love absolutely love rose bushes along with flowers....they will ravage plants if they have the chance.

at least she doesn't have these......!...... I have two friends that have had these guys come right up on their decks - one, came right through her screen door to the kitchen - fortunately, she banged a couple of large pots together and it took off...... they are notorious for destroying our garbage cans!

  21. I've never heard of a javelina, I have to go google it...

Deb, it's a terrible dilemma, isn't it? My sympathies are with the animals whose territory we're taking over more and more -- as the human population grows, the animal population loses more and more of its habitat. It's also why more and more animal diseases are emerging and becoming problems to humans but it's our own fault. But then, people need homes too!

  22. I'm going to have to stop looking at what the cat may have been, now I've found mountain lion. There have been mountain lion sightings in Irvine too. Yup mountain lion have long tails, but it's colour sounds closer.

    Posted 2 years ago by Moonshadow_NZ #

  23. Ooh, a javelina is a peccary. (Not that I really know what a peccary is either but at least I've heard of it.) I was thinking a javelina was some kind of cat.

MS, yes, you'll just worry yourself, most probably it wasn't a mountain lion if it didn't have a tail :)

  24. I'll probably dream of big cats tonight, as long as I don't wake up snarling like one. Speaking of big cats, HRH Butterball is out mousing in the rain! As long as she doesn't leave the headless corpse on the porch for me to stand on like this morning.

  25. Hee, hee, as AV said, flattened mousies, cover 'em with breadcrumbs, like the kitty equivalent of weiner schnitzel...

Posted 2 years ago by jcat #

  26. Sounds like a Bobcat to me also. I have one living in the woods in my backyard. (we have had bad experiences with it! *sniffles*)

  27. MS, if you see a mountain lion believe me you will know it and never forget it. I had a young one about 6 months old when he first started coming onto my property, he would sit by my barn (waiting for rabbits) and watch my dogs for hours. He came around for about a year and then I believe he moved up into the hilly area not far from my place, they get about 6' long with very long tails. He never bothered me nor the dogs, seemed fascinated with my Rottweiler who weighed about 130 lbs and me when I was working in the backyard.

  28. Mmmmmmmmmmmm, mouse schnitzel.
    GAK!

  29. Actually had a young Bobcat on my back porch a few months ago eating the cat food out there for the ferals, only saw it once and it was about 3 a.m.. Right now I live close to some of the hilly area in Tucson, and very near the reservation so a lot of open undeveloped land which is where they tend to live. Now have just seen frogs, lizards, loads of birds, including the road runners (greedy things that eat the lizards and squirrels, but they do keep snakes away) in the area, along with the coyotes and dog packs haven't seen any javelina lately though.

  30. That's a veritable zoo on your doorstep Deb. Any wildlife around my place is limited to birds and the occasional possum.
