  1. Thought I would share.

Lesson 1) No matter what the gas gauge reads, if you have a nagging little voice telling you to get gas...get gas.

Lesson 2) A 4 mile walk (to get gas) when it's 108 (dry heat or not), is not a good thing.

LOL, sometimes I feel pretty stupid.

  2. Sorry about the lessons! But know you know why I want to throw heavy things at people that say..."Oh but it is a dry heat!"

  3. Uh-oh!!!! *makes a sticky note to put in car with sage words of advice*

  4. oh no Chuck...There are many of these little things you make sure you are prepared for when living in the desert...Hopefully this is the last one you have to learn the hard way!!! So sorry, if it makes you feel better, I did the same thing the first week I lived in Phoenix!

  5. Oh my, well you got in an aerobic work out that wasn't planned! I hope you
treated yourself with something cool afterwards!

  6. Oh no ! I hope you had water for your 4 mile 'hike' !!!

I have learned to not trust the gas guage. Seems pressure can build up in the tank in this heat and leave you with a false sense of gas, when all you have is fumes. :(

Oh, and don't feel stupid... welcome to Phoenix ! lol

  7. Yikes chuck!!!!! I'm glad you didn't heat stroke! Put a stick note on the dash. Re-fill when half tank!

  8. OH NO! Good advice :)))

  9. What a welcome to Phoenix....the part that really sucks, if I had walked in the other direction, there was a station within half a mile :(.

    Life's little adventures right?

Posted 2 years ago by Crazycatman - CA #

  10. I didn't know you were coming to Phoenix!!!!! 2popoki and I live here. Geez you picked the wrong week to come---so darn hot now. How long are you going to be here?

When I hear the "dry heat" thing, I say "So's a friggin' oven!"

  11. And always have a gallon of distilled water in the trunk for your radiator (check it often-it evaporates).

  12. Sheba's Mom, I moved here, acutally been here about 3 weeks now.

  13. Hard but good lessions to learn. I bet you won't allow this to happen again, eh Chuck?!

2P and Sheba's Mom, what is your electric bill like for running the A/C? I don't think I would make it in your area as I would have the A/C set at 68 trying to keep cool. My cats wouldn't like that.

I have to visit Las Vegas in August for work each year. Last year, it was around 107 degrees but we were locked in doors in way too cool conference rooms (think they set them at 60 degrees). We did go out one night around 7pm and it was 97 degrees out. Last year it was for three and half days if you include travel time. We spent one day of travel and two full days of conference meetings and flew back out Thursday morning. This year I have to go for four and half days including travel time which is fly out Monday and then spend Tues, Wed and Thurs in meetings and fly home Fri morning. It will be grueling long days so I have put in to take off the following Monday.

  14. When I was in my house ( 1320sq ft)it was usually around $200-250 in the hottest times. In my apt (it's on the ground floor, 1068 sq ft) last month when it was unusually hot for May it was $125. In NY back in 1995-2000 I was paying $400/month.

  15. I set it higher here since the lack of humidity makes it more bearable. If I am just sitting around watching TV I set it on 80 with the ceiling fan running, I am fine. If I am cleaning/cooking i set it lower. At night I need it cool to sleep so I set it at 74.

  16. Maybe it's time for another Phoenix TDK meet! I live in mid-town now, not way out on the west side anymore. Maybe AZDeb could make it this time around?

  17. I'm game for that SM!!

Posted 2 years ago by Crazycatman - CA #

  18. SM I am tipping my hat to you! I like the oven statement! As effective as my throwing heavy objects and a lot less bloody!

  19. Your car battery will only last about 2 years here with the heat, so be prepared. That's about the only auto service I trust Sears with is their Diehard battery.

  20. Poor YOU Chuck!...... about 10 yrs ago, Hubbs bought a Cadillac that had one of the first "digital" gas gauges..... when that "need gas" light came on, if you did not literally turn into a gas station, you flat ran out of gas right then and there!.... seriously, he ran out at least 10 times over the course of us owning that car!....... (I hated that thing!)...... it terrified me so bad, I would never let the thing get past 1/4 empty!......

... my car on the other hand, I drive for a week with the needle on "empty"... never ONCE ran out of gas!..... I must have a HUGE reserve tank...... but then again, I live in a City, so I'm never really driving very far!.... probably why I only have 45,000 miles on my car that is going on 9 yrs old..... But I love this car so much, I don't want to trade it in...... these kind were built to take 200K +...... my mechanic begs me all the time to sell it to him..... it has never had problems, he just services it for me every 6 mos. ....... I just can't part with it!

  21. I would hang on to it--a lot of cars made today are junk--and they wonder why they are going bankrupt!

Posted 2 years ago by Sheba's Mom in Phoenix, AZ 10/8 #

  22. AV, what kind of car is it? Inquiring minds want to know!!

Posted 2 years ago by tinafishfrombirthplaceofElvis #

  23. I agree Sheba - quality is everything.... my mother always told me - spend a little more on a "good thing that will last", rather than less on a lot of "cheap" things.......

that advise has stood me well in many areas - clothes, cars, and many others!

  24. ... my car is a 2001 Mercedes ML320 (their SUV)..... I really researched it - they are solidly built - had the most airbags (6 was standard), and drives like a dream.... you will be going 90 miles an hour, and it hardly feels like it's moving...... they are expensive, but I searched on line for a long time, and then "pounced" on the one I wanted..... here in Fla. the "rich" snowbirds come down in the late fall, and usually buy an expensive car, then sell it around "March or April" when they go back up north..... I bought mine with only 3000 miles on it, and saved over $10,000 off what a brand new one would have cost me!... plus it had sooooo many upgrades on it, that would have "broken my bank" had I bought it from a dealership new - leather seats, sunroof, amazing stereo, GPS bay!....... I was very proud of myself - patience paid off......like I said before, these cars are built to take massive amounts of mileage, I paid the car off long ago, and haven't had car payments in 5 years..... another nice thing was, because I bought it within the first year, the dealership that sold it to the original owner was able to let me purchase the extended warranty, so I have 10 years or 100,000 miles...... truly one of the best deals I've ever made!

  25. Chuck, don't you just hate it when you don't listen to that nagging voice in your head. At our place I have had an ongoing point of disagreement with Mr MS. I insist that the gas tank gets no lower than 1/4 full, because it was safer for the girls and me to always have that amount in the car "in case of". His point was that even though it reads empty there is many more kilometers of travel possible. I still keep the car no lower than 1/4 full, it's just not safe for women to be hiking along looking for a petrol station, possibly at night.

  26. With my camry, I can get away with it being at empty as there is a 4 gallon reserve. I don't like to go below 1/4 tank anyways because I was informed that it is better for the engine to never go below that level. I did run out of gas with my 1997 Toyota Corolla and it being an automatic, never did shift properly after that. I sold it when I bought the 2000 Rav and then sold that to buy the camry (regretting that decision now). If I had kept the Rav, it would be paid off now. Can't sell the camry as the loan is under water still.
