  1. Swansboro, a small town in eastern, North Carolina is the setting for the novel. How does this setting help Julie and Mike fall in love? How does it hinder it? How does the setting enhance the danger imposed by Richard? How does it hinder it? Could this type of story have happened anywhere? Why or why not?

  2. I am SO sorry!!!! I didn't get to read this book, and I really wanted to. I feel like I have let the group down.

Please discuss the book, everyone! I want to read it in the future.

  3. I got it from the library but have been too busy to read it. It's due back in a few days, and I never opened it. :-(

  4. I think the setting helps Mike and Julie fall in love because it' makes for an intimate setting in every situation. On the other hand, being such a small town "helped" Richard because he knew everyone he needed to know and being in a small town, everyone seems to know everyone else.

I do think this story could be anywhere else because everything still could of happened, just on a larger scale.

  5. Animal, I think you hit it on the head...no other place would have put Mike and Julie in a situation to be such "close" friend...

I'm not sure if the story could really work in a bigger city since all of it would be diluted down. It needs the close, tight knit feel.

  6. ..... well, in small towns, "everyone" knows your business.....I think everyone wanted Julie and Mike to get together because they also knew her first husband, and knew he would approve of Mike......

.... small towns also don't offer many options - there are few single men to date, so everyone knows who's available, and who's not.....

... I'm not sure the small town helped Richard, other than to help him "hide" his real identity, and also helped him to keep tabs on Julie.... however, when he started doing bad things, I think it hindered him because it was very evident when he left......

  7. I think the setting both hindered and helped their relationship. Julie and Mike knew each other really well and were friends so it was an easy step to falling in love but with that came the fear of losing the friendship if it didn't work out. It enhances the danger presented by Richard because you don't think it would happen here. It hindered him because people tend to know what is going on in small towns. The emotions are the same so I think the situation could happen anywhere but the circumstances would be different.
