  1. My cat Stinkey's going to be 13 in October. She just went to the vet, and she's lost 2lbs over the past year (not sure if it's important to know, but it's def not good), and the vet wanted to make sure she didn't have an UTI, and the results came back negative...
The reason we wanted him to test is because Stinkey's always been a random sprayer, but recently we've been finding pee EVERY WHERE. I'm not taking it out of proportion either.
On the main floor alone, she's peed all over my dog's food area, the boy's dry food area, and all of the counters in the kitchen. Downstairs she pees at the bottom of the steps, under the dry food table, we just found pee in the laundry room, she pees by my bowflex, and in our junk room.

We use Nature's Miracle, and other of those types of cleaners to clean it, but she hasn't stopped. I even tried Feliway in my dog's area, but I'm now in the process of cleaning pee from the corner.

My mom thinks she could be peeing out of anger towards the other cats/dog since she pees mostly in the places they frequent. She's also been meowing constantly to go outside, but when I let her out, she sprays everything, then she runs towards the road, which makes me scared so she just howls at the door because I wont let her out. She'll even just sit and meow sometimes, and my mom gets super mad because it's not the cute stink meow, it's her mean loud meow.

I refuse to get rid of an animal just because he/she pisses, but it's getting insane, and I don't know how to stop it!!!!!

PLEASE, if anyone has any suggestions, they'd be greatly appreciated, I don't care how stupid or insane they may be. I just want my stink-pot back to the occasional out-of-the-box urinator she used to be.

  2. Oh, I wanted to add that Sinkey doesn't just piddle in a corner... she sprays it out and it goes everywhere! You can always tell when she uses the box because there's a line of pee on the floor away from the box.

  3. What has changed around her? Figure that out and you might be on to why she is spraying.

Posted 2 years ago by SoxsMom #

  4. Maybe it's something I missed but is Stinky spayed? Cats very rarely pee out of anger it's almost always a health issue. Other than that I don't know what to tell you,the others will have advice too, hang in there,we'll figure this out.

  5. If not a UTI I was wondering if it is kidney problems or failure. Was there any blood work done?

Posted 2 years ago by SoxsMom #

  6. Stinkey was spayed back in the day. As for changes, we've always been a multiple cat house, but our older cats (the ones she's grown up with) have all died, so now it's just the young boys... the second oldest is Tiger, and he's only 3.
Soxmom, I remember the vet mentioning bloodwork, but honestly I can't remember if he did or not. I'm thinking I'll have my mom call and ask Thursday (they're freakin closed Wednesdays because it's his surgery day).
uugghh I don't want anything to be wrong with her medically...

Posted 2 years ago by Niki and Charlie #

  7. Well if it is medical perhaps it can be cured quickly. Most animals live in the here and now. I am sure Stinkey grieved the loss of friends, but I am still wondering if there isn't something medical going on. Prayers are with you, and please let us know what happens. Basil had kidney failure because of the feline leukimia. Catch it early and medicine will work.

  8. My heart goes out to you, N&C, it's obvious how much you love her. I can't help thinking it must be something medical too, with the losing weight as well. Is there any chance she could have developed diabetes or something? Is she drinking a lot more, for instance? (it's a long shot but it almost sounds like she can't help herself.) If it really is because she's freaking out because of the other cats, maybe you need to talk to the vet about some kind of sedative, she shouldn't be that freaked out and it would be truly terrible for poor Stinky to be so frightened and/or angry all the time. Hope you can get some sort of handle on it. Poor Stinky. {{{HUGS}}} to you!

  9. My mom talked to the vet, and told me that when she goes in Monday morning, they're going to check her weight, but only do bloodwork if her weight's decreased, but I'm def going to tell him I want her to be tested even if she's gained/stayed the same weight.
The vet's mentioned mood pills in the past, so if her bloodwork comes back with good answers, then we'll try the mood stabilizers.

So I want to be able to tell him my concerns for which I want checked, but other than Diabetes and her Kidneys, is there anything else that could be wrong and causing her peeing??? And can they check for diabetes with a blood sample??

I'm not sure if she's drinking more, I don't really pay much attention to the kithen area, where the water bowls are.

  10. I agree that the first place to start is with a medical exam. It also strikes me, though, that spraying is a territorial marking behavior, and that females do it as well as males, though males probably do it more. Have any new outdoor cats showed up in the neighborhood? Could she be trying to let them know where her territory is?

In humans, diabetes is diagnoses through bloodwork. I suppose it's the same for cats, but I'm not certain.

  11. When Stinky had this same problem last year, you said the vet finally gave her something that seemed to help. Can you ask him to prescribe whatever it was again?

Be sure to tell the vet what you said about the line of pee leading away from the cat box. That doesn't say "territory marking" so much as it indicates a medical/physical problem. She may not have a UTI but maybe she has a prolapse, or stones or something else like that.

The vet can't make a good diagnosis without all the details so be sure to tell him everything you can think of. Write it down before you go if you think you'll get flustered and forget something.

  12. Yep, they can test for diabetes through blood work. They can probably rule it in or out right there in the exam room by checking her blood sugar level. I'm not saying it's likely, it's just it's the only thing I can think of that might be medical. Good luck N&C, {{{HUGS}}} to you and poor little Stinky.

  13. Is she in heat?

Posted 2 years ago by Akashas Mommy #

  14. When they do the blood work, will they test for hyper thyroid? It's very common in older cats and can effect their personality, cause them to lose weight, and increase their energy levels.

  15. Thanks everyone, sorry for the delayed responses... Holiday weekend's been too much fun for me! But now it's back to reality and at 9am tomorrow Stinks and I will be at the vet. I'm going to make sure to mention I'm concerned about making sure everything's okay with her: 1. Thyroid 2. Kidneys 3. Blood Sugar... before giving her mind altering drugs, but if she seems healthy, then I suppose pills is our next best option.
I'll try to remember to update everyone when we get the results. They usually mail the samples, or send them to the hospital for testing so I won't know for a day or so I'm guessing.
Thanks again, I'm hoping tomorrow goes smoothly and there's nothing too serious!

  16. Oh, I forgot to answer all the questions, ehehe I'm tired.
I've not noticed any new cats, but our neighbors have a ton of cats which I've seen in my neighbor's yard on rare occasions, but not in my yard (the dog seems to keep strays away).
Stinkey shouldn't be in heat since she's spayed, and doesn't know what it's like to want a boyfriend :-D
Cheetah's Mommy, I'm not sure if I misstyped something, or you read it weirdly, but Stinkey's never been on pills for her mood, just for UTI's in the past. She's always had issues with peeing and her UTI's when she was younger, but last time the test was negative. Panda Orson however was on mind altering drugs, and one time stinkey ate it off the floor when I dropped it, and was a little stoned for a while... heheh, oh man, I need to go to bed now.
Thanks again everyone, I really appreciate the helpfulness that comes from you.

  17. Hope it all goes well at the vet tomorrow, N&C. {{{N&C and Stinkey}}}

  18. Actually Jcat, we just got home! I got to the vet about ten mins early (after taking a drive around the neighborhood because I was super early) and they took us right in, weighed her, saw she was the same weight, looked her over and was like "alright, what do you have to do today?" and I'm just like UUGGGHH "nothing" so he sent me to Metro... I was kinda dreading it, but I got there at 9:20am, sat until 9:30, when a SUPER cute guy comes walking out and asks if this "is the lovely Stink(e)y" (THEY SPELL HER NAME AS THOUGH SHE STINKS! haha, I put an EY because she's ccuutteee cat, not a stinky cat) anyways, he said he'd be back in ten mins, and around 9:40ish he was back and said she was awesome. I stood up, realized he was super short, and went to pay.

I just want to "lol" with someone about the price breakdown. Now I knew it would be around 2-3 hundred, and I don't care, but they break down the costs on the bill and it's just silly to me...
Radiograph paper (I'm guessing it's the paper) = 50 (they charged 25 twice)
    "Professional" X-Ray = 35
VetRad Reading of X-rays = 45 (I love how they get paid more to look at them than to actually deal with the kitten and take the picture)
    So there's 130 for just the x-ray
Plus 64 for blood, and add some other random charges plus an hour of my life, and two different clinics, it only cost 238.76 and some gas.
I haven't told my mom about the price (she told me she doesn't want to spend a ton trying to find out what's wrong, but I'd rather spend the money now to prevent crap, than to wait until they say she needs surgery or something), but I'm thinking she won't be too upset with the number... the short cute guy said my vet'll call me tomorrow so we shall wait and see for the results!

    Sorry, I type a lot

  19. I'll be keeping all paws crossed for good results!!!

  20. Prayers that Stinkey will be okay. Prayers of peace and comfort to you.

  21. Thanks 2bp and sox and everyone else!
Stinkey's laying in the sun with Tiger Way and Mylie Cyrus [Mylo] (I think Panda Orson, and Charlie realized I'm talking about the others so they just walked in with sleepy eyes)

  22. I'm wishing the best for Stinkey!!

  23. Alrighty everyone, the vet called and left my momma a message!!
Stinkey's tests all came back okay so they're going to try mood modifying medications, which I can pick up Thursday, but I'll be working >.<
I'll have to see about getting off early or having my mom pick them up.
Thanks everyone for the well wishes, and ideas to tell my vet.
I guess Stinkey is just "peed" off hehehe, I made a pun.

She sprayed the window this morning when I tried to show her the birds outside. She's so silly, she didn't think I'd care or something. What a butthead. Hopefully pills make her happy because I guess I don't make her happy anymore

Posted 2 years ago by Niki and Charlie #

  24. Niki - it's not you!! Please don't think that. I hope the mood medication works, and bless you for hanging in there!

Posted 2 years ago by MadcatwomanintheUK #

  25. Niki, it's the same thing as with people I guess. Sometimes they need a little help. Please don't blame yourself. She still loves you and you are helping her.

  26. I do sometimes wonder if Stinkey would have been happier as an Only cat, but if I hadn't chosen her, she would have gone to a farm, and she'd def not be happy there!!! I hate to say it, but she prob would not be alive... I don't understand how our old neighbors could just have multiple kittens, then take them to a farm and drop them off... I guess trashy ppl have trashy views on life and it blows my mind, but anyways

I really do hope the pills help her stop peeing everywhere!!

Posted 2 years ago by Niki and Charlie #

  27. Just catching up to this post--I would have guessed a thyroid problem, but you say everything came back normal. If she is otherwise healthy, and I have heard there are animal therapists for psychological problems. Have you tried confining her to one small area with her litter box until she gets used to going only in it? Other than that I have no other clues.

Posted 2 years ago by Sheba's Mom in Phoenix, AZ 10/8 #

  28. I'm glad that the tests have come back normal. I was thinking that you were going to say that her kidneys were failing. When my kitty Mirth first got sick, she started peeing in weird places and lost a lot of weight. This was strange because Mirth was a fatty who NEVER went outside the box. I thought it was a behavioral problem because we had two new kittens. I didn't realize that she was trying to tell me that she was getting sick. Once we figured it out, I put her on prescription food which extended her life about two years. I don't even want to think about how much money I spent on vet bills and prescription food. It was a lot, but she was priceless to me. I totally understand and appreciate how you're willing to do what you can for her. Lots of people wouldn't care as much. By the way, does Stinkey's pee smell weird, or does it smell like normal cat pee? Mirth's pee smelled kind of like burning hair after her kidneys starting failing.
